By demonstrating the intended syntactic features, it aims to explore the language’s aesthetic and stylistic characteristics and functions. A comparative perspective is made of the CR literary language with that of pre-CR and post-CR literature. -

David Damrosch in Conversation with Wang Ning David Damrosch was interviewed by Wang Ning at the Fifth Sino- American Symposium on Comparative Literature, held in Shanghai, August 2010. The conversation brings together two eminent scholars of comparative literature from the East and West. Wang Ning began by asking the status of world literature in an age of proliferating new media and popular culture. I think you must have made some new Chinese friends and got acquainted with new readers and critics and university students during your visit to Shanghai. Since you are now well-known in China for your remarkable books, What Is World Literature? and How to Read World Literature?, both of which will be published soon in Chinese, Chinese readers will regard you as a pioneering figure in promoting world literature in such an age of globalization. Would you please comment on the significance of world litera- ture in an age of globalization, when literature is often reported to be “dead” and literary study is severely challenged by the rise of popular culture and consumer culture in postmodern societies? It seems to me that our global world has more need of literature than ever, and of world literature in particular, where so many people’s hori- zons now are international and global in so much movement of people across borders, and academic institutions are so much more opened out to students around the world. This is certainly true in China; we are seeing a massive movement of Chinese students to many other parts of the world. -

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Howard Goldblatt, an American translator of Chinese literature including the works of Nobel Prize in Literature winner Mo Yan. The papers contain Goldblatt’s correspondence with authors, editors, and publishing houses from across Mainland China, Taiwan, and elsewhere; drafts of Goldblatt’s many translations; and notes created during his translation work. Goldblatt’s personal library of over 7,000 volumes is also held by the Chinese Literature Translation Archive. Biographical Note: As one of America’s most prolific and influential translators of any language, Howard Goldblatt (葛浩文, born 1939) has introduced generations of English readers to a wide spectrum of contemporary Chinese- language literature and brought translated Chinese literature from the confines of academia into the mainstream. With nearly 50 translations of novels, memoirs, and a major anthology of poetry, Goldblatt’s translations have been reviewed by the most prestigious magazines, newspapers, online media outlets, and by literary giants like John Updike, among others. He is the only official English- language translator of novelist Mo Yan, who won the Nobel Prize in literature. Contemporary Chinese Fiction: Politics and Romance Jing Kaixuan I. Introduction When we review Chinese literature since the new era began in 1978, we may reach the conclusion that the writing of novels has flour- ished both in quality and quantity, compared with other periods since 1949. Chinese writers have more freedom in writing and publishing (in some respects) than ever before, creating the impression of relative freedom from political influence. However, as we know from the text- books of literary history, the “Literature of the New Era” is still divided from the other eras according to political history. Contemporary litera- ture cannot evade politics because China remains a highly politicized state. Although the influence of politics has taken different forms in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and the present decade, it has always been present, whether overtly or implicitly.
