FLIGHTS OF THE ANT POLYERGUS LUCIDUS MAYR* BY MARY TALBOT Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri Flights of ants at the Edwin S. George Reserve, Livingston County, Michigan, have been studied over a number of years (Talbot 956, I959, 963, I964, 966, and Kannowski 959a, 959b). This paper is another in the flight series and concerns the slave-making ant, Polyergus lucidus Mayr. Polyergus colonies are scattered over the George Reserve, living in open ields or at woods' edge and forming mixed colonies with Formica pallidefulva nitidiventris Emery. The flights recorded here took place mainly from the Lawn Colony, where 26 flights were seen during 1960, 96, and 1962. These. observations were supplemented, fo.r comparison, by records of seven flights from two other colonies. The main flights, of Polyergus at he Reserve took place during August. They began in late July a.nd extended into early or mid- September. July 31, 1962 was rhe date of the earliest flight seen, although a dealate female was found on July 28, 1964. The latest flight recorded, on September 9, 1963, liberated only three males. The flight season at any one colony is long, probably a month to six weeks, and the time of starting and stopping flights must vary considerably from. colony to colony, depending on local environment o the nest and rate. of maturing of the brood. Polyergus spread the. maturing of brood of winged ants over an ex- tended period, and flights began long before all of the adults had emerged. Winged pupae have been found as early in the year as June 19, 1962, and as late as September I, 1964. -

Interspecific competition is a major structuring force in ant assemblages. The assemblages are organized hierarchically, with territorial species as top competitors. In boreal areas and in the temperate deciduous forest biome common territorials are species of the subgenus Formica s. str. They are well known for their negative impact on lower-ranked ant species. Less is known, though the structuring role of Lasius fuliginosus, another territorial ant species. Some earlier studies have shown or suggested that it may restrictively affect subordinate species (including direct predation toward them) even stronger than wood ants do. In the present study we compared species compositions and nest densities of subordinate ant species within and outside territories of L. fuliginosus. The results obtained confirmed that this species visibly impoverishes both qualitatively (reduced species richness, altered dominance structures) and quantitatively (decreased nest densities) ant assemblages within its territories. -

The only known list of ants of Oklahoma is one prepared by Mo Ro Smith (1935)0 Early in 1954 a survey of the state of Oklahoma was made to determine the species present and their distributiono The results of this survey, which blanketed the entire State, are given in this paper. Myrmecologische Nachrichten 8 257 - 262 Wien, September 2006 Formica lusatica SEIFERT, 1997 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), an ant species new to Finland, with notes on its biology and the description of males Wojciech CZECHOWSKI & Alexander RADCHENKO Abstract A taxonomically problematic ant species from southernmost Finland, so far determined as Formica rufibarbis FABRICIUS, 1793 or / and F. cunicularia LATREILLE, 1798, is identified as Formica lusatica SEIFERT, 1997. This is the first report of this species from Finland. Aspects of the biology of F. lusatica under the local conditions, and especially its relations with Formica sanguinea LATREILLE, 1798, are presented and the description of its males is given. Hasiotis Date Defended: 02/27/2014 ii ABSTRACT The majority of ant-related bioturbation research has focused on physiochemical properties of the nest mound. However, ants are also known to line subsurface nest components (chambers and galleries) with coarse material, and may expand or backfill areas as colony size expands and contracts. These alterations may contribute to significant redistribution of soil material leading to alterations in soil physical and hydrological properties. The goal of this study was to examine the physical, chemical, and hydrological effects of the subterranean portion of ant nests on the soil profile. We measured soil in the field that was located near (<2 cm) and away (<1 m) from ant nests, and compared them to unaltered soil approximately 2 m away. Two- dimensional tracings of nest architecture were used to predict the nest effect on hydraulic properties of a fine-textured soil. -

Variation in queen number alters the genetic structure of social insect colonies, which in turn affects patterns of kin-selected con¯ict and cooperation. Theory suggests that shifts from single- to multiple-queen colonies are often associated with other changes in the breeding system, such as higher queen turnover, more local mating, and restricted dispersal. These changes may restrict gene ¯ow between the two types of colonies and it has been suggested that this might ultimately lead to sympatric speciation. We performed a detailed microsatellite analysis of a large population of the ant Formica selysi, which revealed extensive variation in social structure, with 71 colonies headed by a single queen and 41 by multiple queens. This polymorphism in social structure appeared stable over time, since little change in the number of queens per colony was detected over a ®ve-year period. Apart from queen number, single- and multiple-queen colonies had very similar breeding systems. Queen turnover was absent or very low in both types of colonies. Single- and multiple-queen colonies exhibited very small but signi®cant levels of inbreeding, which indicates a slight deviation from random mating at a local scale and suggests that a small proportion of queens mate with related males. -

Talbot: The Slave-making Ant Formica Gynocrates (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) 1985 THE GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST 103 THE SLAVE-MAKING ANT FORMICA GYNOCRATES (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE) Mary Talbot' ABSTRACT Formica gynocrates, a recently described species of slave-making ant, was found at the E. S. George Reserve in southern Michigan. It contrasted with the other five sanguinea group species found there by living in dry fields and enslaving a field-dwelling ant, F onnica villculalls. Slave raids were carried on from 16 June to 11 September and flights occurred between 5 July and 14 August. Three other sanguinea group species, F. subintegra, F pergandei, and F. rubicullda, were most common along field-wood ecotones. They enslaved F subsericea, and F pergandei occasionally took F pallidefulva nitidirelltris. F sub nuda lived in and under logs and usually had no slaves or a limited number of F subsericea. -

Reported here are observations of feeding by 49 species of true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) encountered in Wisconsin over 1992-2002. ____________________ Knowing what an animal eats is basic to our understanding of that ani- mal and its habitat requirements. From 1992 through 2002, I accumulated many observations of insects feeding in Wisconsin. Presented here are data from 49 species and subspecies in 11 families including Alydidae, Berytidae, Coreidae, Cydnidae, Lygaeidae, Miridae, Nabidae, Pentatomidae, Reduviidae, Rhopalidae and Scutelleridae.
