Enfoque introductorio El Seminario denominado “ESTUDIO CRIMINOLÓGICO Y CRIMINALÍSTICO DE RIESGOS DEL CONSUMO DE HONGOS TÓXICOS Y POTENCIALMENTE TÓXICOS” fue seleccionado como tema de Tesis por el grupo de alumnos del Seminario en virtud de la importancia y peligro que reviste el consumo de los mismos, por la gran variedad de especies de hongos que existen y por la gravedad de las intoxicaciones que producen en una persona luego de su ingesta, llegando a provocar la muerte en algunos casos. Las setas tóxicas pueden provocar diversos trastornos en función de la toxina que contengan. Aunque los hongos superiores no se encuentran en alta proporción en la dieta humana, presentan un alto riesgo tóxico, principalmente por la frecuencia de la intoxicación, incluso con una alta fatalidad, en relación al número de personas expuestas. Debido a que las distintas especies de hongos varían ampliamente en las toxinas que contienen y porque identificarlas con certeza es difícil, se utiliza la clínica más que un sistema taxonómico de clasificación. Aun así existen 8 grupos de hongos tóxicos reconocidos con mayor frecuencia en función del tipo de toxina que contienen: ciclopéptidos, giromitrina, orellanina, muscarina, coprina, ácido iboténico/ muscinol, psilocibina y toxinas gastrointestinales (Rios, 2012) Por lo expuesto anteriormente es necesario conocer la etiología de la intoxicación, en el entendido que la etiología (gr. aitia, causa) consiste en la búsqueda y conocimiento del origen o motivación de una intoxicación. Conforme a esto, para clasificar las intoxicaciones, es importante considerar si en su producción ha habido o no voluntariedad, es decir, si el sujeto activo ha deseado realizarla o si la intoxicación se produjo de forma accidental. (Repetto, 2007) 1 2 El propósito que se persigue con la elaboración del trabajo y los distintos módulos que lo conforman es que la investigación realizada llegue a la población guatemalteca y dé a conocer los riesgos y las consecuencias a que puede llevar el consumo de estos productos. La metodología y modalidad empleada para el desarrollo del trabajo es eminentemente investigativa bibliográfica; este tipo de trabajos ha sido descrito por algunos autores como “de transcripción” y procuran dar extensión y profundidad al tema. En el trabajo se incluyeron varias partes así en los antecedentes del tema, se incluyeron asimismo estudios realizados por expertos tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, casos que por el consumo inadecuado de estos productos han generado situaciones calificadas como impericias, imprudencias, dolos o criminalidad premeditada. Un glosario genérico del tema y un glosario especializado se añadió también. Se definirán los objetivos que finalmente pretenden arribar al desarrollo del tema grupal “Estudio Criminológico y Criminalìstico del consumo de hongos tóxicos” y a profundizar sobre el módulo Paxillus involutus 3 B. Antecedentes El consumo de hongos o setas tóxicas es un hecho relativamente frecuente que data de la antigüedad: Sebastián de Covarrubias, en el primer diccionario de la Lengua Castellana (siglo XVII) cita a Plinio el Viejo, quien consideraba las setas como manjares exquisitos pero peligrosos y alertaba sobre su riesgo. Los hongos han servido de alimento al hombre, seguramente desde que éste era recolector nómada y se alimentaba de los productos que encontraba en su camino, aunque, también

CLEMENCON Institut de Botanique Systematique Bätiment de Biologie, Universite de Lausanne CH-1015 Lausanne-Dorigny, Switzerland Introduction Microscopic examination of some hundred European collections of Paxillus (belonging to the section Paxillus) revealed the existence of an uncommon hyphal type characterized by transverse ribs located at the inner surface of the wall. The present paper describes possible development and the occurrence of these and related struc- tures in Paxillus. Material and methods The collections studied are deposited in Leiden (L), Munich (M), Stockholm (S), Kew (K) and Lausanne (LAU) under the names Paxillus filamentosus, P. leptopus, P. rubicundulus (including type specimen) and P. involutus. For ease of reference to the herbarium collections all these names will be used here, despite the fact that the epithets "leptopus" and probably also "rubicundulus" are synonyms of filamentosus. A small fragment of the gills is soaked for 5 to 15 minutes in concentrated ammonia or preferably in a solution called "Kanamoa" (KOH-NaCl buffer 55 ml; glycerol 15 g; ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, Merck 859 25 ml). The KOH-NaCl buffer is prepared by dissolving 3.6 g of KOH and 3.8 g of NaCl in 420 ml of distilled water.

Strains with various abilities to form mycorrhizae were analysed by comparative genomic hybridizations using a cDNA micro- array containing 1076 putative unique genes of P. involutus. To screen for genes diverging at an enhanced and presumably non-neutral rate, we implemented a simple rate test using information from both the variations in hybridizations signal and data on sequence diver- gence of the arrayed genes relative to the genome of Coprinus cinereus. C. cinereus is a free- living saprophyte and is the closest evolutionary relative to P. involutus that has been fully sequenced. Approximately 17% of the genes investigated were detected as rapidly diverging within Paxillus. Furthermore, 6% of the genes varied in copy numbers between the analysed strains. Genome rearrangements associated with this variation including dupli- cations and deletions may also play a role in adaptive evolution. The cohort of divergent and duplicated genes showed an over-representation of either orphans, genes whose products are located at membranes, or genes encoding for components of stress/defence reactions.

Critical ecological research on belowground ecosystems has often been impeded because of the inability to adequately recognize ectomycorrhizal relationships, especially the abundance, diversity, and distribution of the fungus component, and the specificity of particular fungus—host combinations. Red alder, with its high degree of host specificity and paucity of fungal symbionts, provides an ideal model for studying these attributes. Eleven morphologically recognizable types of ecto- mycorrhizae were characterized from field-collected root material, greenhouse soil bioassays, and laboratory syntheses. Most mycobionts were basidiomycetes, as evidenced by abundant clamp connections present in the mantle and extramatrical hyphae. Seven mycobionts identified to species included Alpova diplophloeus, Thelephora terrestris, Lactarius obscuratus, Cortinarius bibulus, Laccaria laccata, Hebeloma crustuliniforme, and Paxillus involutus. Many of the ectomycorrhizae collected in the field appeared to have more than one mycobiont present in the mantle. Root tips could generally be categorized into either flexuous or succulent morphological types. The flexuous types were long, thin, indeterminate in growth, with an acute root apex, and the mantle and Hartig net in longitudinal section were not well formed near the root apex.

Richter, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI for Ottawa National Forest, Ironwood, MI March, 2011 Introduction There are many thousands of fungi in the Ottawa National Forest filling every possible niche imaginable. A remarkable feature of the fungi is that they are ubiquitous! The mushroom is the large spore-producing structure made by certain fungi. Only a relatively small number of all the fungi in the Ottawa forest ecosystem make mushrooms. Some are distinctive and easily identifiable, while others are cryptic and require microscopic and chemical analyses to accurately name. This is a list of some of the most common and obvious mushrooms that can be found in the Ottawa National Forest, including a few that are uncommon or relatively rare. The mushrooms considered here are within the phyla Ascomycetes – the morel and cup fungi, and Basidiomycetes – the toadstool and shelf-like fungi. There are perhaps 2000 to 3000 mushrooms in the Ottawa, and this is simply a guess, since many species have yet to be discovered or named. This number is based on lists of fungi compiled in areas such as the Huron Mountains of northern Michigan (Richter 2008) and in the state of Wisconsin (Parker 2006). The list contains 227 species from several authoritative sources and from the author’s experience teaching, studying and collecting mushrooms in the northern Great Lakes States for the past thirty years. Although comments on edibility of certain species are given, the author neither endorses nor encourages the eating of wild mushrooms except with extreme caution and with the awareness that some mushrooms may cause life-threatening illness or even death.

The name Paxillus ammoniavirescens was published in ‘Spring 1999’ [northern hemisphere] and that of Paxillus validus in August 1999, making P. ammoniavirescens the correct name for this species. A variant without pigments fits into P. involutus, suggesting that P. albidulus might be an albino variant of any species in the P. involutus complex. Paxillus ammoniavirescens is widespread in Europe and has been introduced in the southern hemisphere; P. obscurosporus is known from China and Europe; and the two taxa in the P. involutus clade are reported from Europe and from North America.     Mycobiology Research Article Influence of the Culture Media and the Organic Matter in the Growth of Paxillus ammoniavirescens (Contu & Dessi) , Elena Fernández-Miranda Cagigal* # and Abelardo Casares Sánchez Department of Biology of Organism and Systems, Area of Plant Physiology, University of Oviedo, 33006 Oviedo, Spain Abstract The genus Paxillus is characterized by the difficulty of species identification, which results in reproducibility problems, as well as the need for large quantities of fungal inoculum. In particular, studies of Paxillus ammoniavirescens have reported divergent results in the in vitro growth while little is known of its capacity to degrade organic matter. For all the above, and assuming that this variability could be due to an inappropriate culture media, the aim of this study was to analyse growth in different culture media (MMN, MS, and 1/2 MS) and in the case of MMN in presence/absence of two types of organic matter (fresh litter and senescence litter) to probe the saprophytic ability of P. ammoniavirescens. We also evaluated the effects of pH changes in the culture media. Growth kinetics was assessed by weekly quantification of the area of growth in solid culture media over 5 wk, calculating the growth curves and inflection points of each culture media. In addition, final biomass after 5 wk in the different culture media was calculated. Results showed that best culture media are MS and 1/2 MS. Moreover, an improvement in growth in culture media containing decomposing fall litter was observed, leading to confirm differences in the culture media of this species with others of the same genus.

Mycelia of A. princeps and G. suthepensis were isolated from basidiocarps of the ECM mushrooms in Northern Thailand. Mycelia of A. princeps grew well on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and modified Melin Norgans (MMN) agar at pH 6 and at 28oC in the dark condition. Mycelia of G. suthepensis grew well on PDA and Pachlewski (PACH) agar supplemented with 1.0 g L-1 yeast extract at 25oC and at pH 6 and 7. The dark condition or the daily light and dark condition did not have significant effect on mycelial growth of G. suthepensis. ECM roots of C. acuminatissima inoculated with A.
