Likhachov’s outstanding contribution to the development of the home science and culture I enact: 1. the Government of the Russian Federation should: – establish two personal grants in honour of D. S. Likhachov at the rate of 400 roubles each for university students from the year 2001 and to define the procedure of conferring them; – work out the project of D. S. Likhachov’s gravestone on a com- petitive basis together with the Government of St. Petersburg; – consider the issue of making a film devoted to D. S. Likhachov’s life and activities. 2. the Government of St. Petersburg should: – name one of the streets in St. Petersburg after D. S. Likhachov; – consider the issue of placing a memorial plate on the building of the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Scien- ce (Pushkin’s House); – guarantee the work on setting up D. S. Likhachov’s gravestone in prescribed manner. 3. According to the suggestion from the Russian Academy of Scien- ce the Likhachov Memorial Prizes of the Russian Academy of Science should be established for Russian and foreign scientists for their out- standing contribution to the research of literature and culture of an- cient Russia, and the collected writings of the late Academician should be published. 4. According to the suggestion from St. Petersburg Intel li- gentsia Congress the International Likhachov Scientific Confe- rence should be annually held on the Day of the Slavonic Let- ters and Culture. The Organization was created in 1945 to build peace through cooperation in edu- cation, science, culture, communication and information. Our Constitution declares that if wars start in the minds of men and women, then it is in the minds of men and women that the defences of peace must be built. Ignorance of each other’s ways, and prejudice against the ‘fruitful diversity of cultures’ are identified as causes of mistrust, tension and conflict. The world has changed since 1945, but this mandate remains as relevant as ever. Globalization has opened unprecedented opportunities for understanding, contact and exchange. At the same time, new questions are emerging about how to manage the deepening diversity of our societies. Increasing contacts has been accompanied by heightened anxiety from individuals and communities facing new pressures. In a context of economic austerity, it is vital for public policy to build new

Belinsky was in good company with his assessment. Such sentiments are rife in the critical essays and articles of the first third of the nineteenth century. A decade earlier, Aleksandr Bestuzhev had declared that, “we have a criticism but no literature” (Leighton, Romantic Criticism 67). Several years before that, Pyotr Vyazemsky voiced a similar opinion in his article on Pushkin’s Captive of the Caucasus : “A Russian language exists, but a literature, the worthy expression of a mighty and virile people, does not yet exist!” (Leighton, Romantic Criticism 48).     Marina Dmitrieva* Traces of Transit Jewish Artists from Eastern Europe in Berlin In the 1920s, Berlin was a hub for the transfer of culture between East- ern Europe, Paris, and New York. The German capital hosted Jewish art- ists from Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, where the Kultur-Liga was found- ed in 1918, but forced into line by Soviet authorities in 1924. Among these artists were figures such as Nathan Altman, Henryk Berlewi, El Lissitzky, Marc Chagall, and Issachar Ber Ryback. Once here, they be- came representatives of Modernism. At the same time, they made origi- nal contributions to the Jewish renaissance. Their creations left indelible traces on Europe’s artistic landscape. But the idea of tracing the curiously subtle interaction that exists between the concepts “Jewish” and “mod- ern”... does not seem to me completely unappealing and pointless, especially since the Jews are usually consid- ered adherents of tradition, rigid views, and convention. Arthur Silbergleit1 The work of East European Jewish artists in Germany is closely linked to the question of modernity. The search for new possibilities of expression was especially relevant just before the First World War and throughout the Weimar Republic. Many Jewish artists from Eastern Europe passed through Berlin or took up residence there. One distinguish- ing characteristic of these artists was that on the one hand they were familiar with tradi- tional Jewish forms of life due to their origins; on the other hand, however, they had often made a radical break with this tradition. Contemporary observers such as Kurt Hiller characterised “a modern Jew” at that time as “intellectual, future-oriented, and torn”.2 It was precisely this quality of being “torn” that made East European artists and intellectuals from Jewish backgrounds representative figures of modernity.

Sokolovskiy A BUNDLE OF DISPARATE INTERESTS: Research Fields and Sub-Disciplines in the Present-Day Russian Anthropology∗ Names are often misleading, the names of the disciplines doubly so. What went by the name of anthropology in Russia just a few years ago (and is still going on beyond its capitals and large universities) often needs elaborate comments and long explanations for our colleagues elsewhere. In gross terms, the predominant occupations of Russian (socio-cultural) anthropologists cum ethnologists might be roughly grouped into two large and mutually independent (in terms of research activities, journals, reading audiences, and mutual citations, or, better, the lack of latter) domains. The first and more populated area is the study of the so- called nationalities policy with its perpetual issues, such as nation-building, ‘inter-ethnic relations’, ‘ethnic conflicts’, minorities’ and indigenous peoples’ rights, the policies of ethnic categorization and ethnic groups recognition, identity politics, multiculturalism and tolerance. The second, less directly influenced by political whims and fashions is the old Russian tradition of anthropological research that is centred on what is elsewhere known as ethnology proper, with its own conventional objects – folklore, mythology, traditions (or what is vaguely termed ‘traditional culture’), customs and rituals, and with its recent interest in more fluid and flimsy urban ways and lifestyles. There are also physical or bio-anthropology and archaeology, but they are not viewed as parts of Russian anthropology: most former ‘ethnographers-turned- /cultural/anthropologists’ consider these specializations as separate disciplines, albeit often sharing the same administrative and financial resources as ‘anthropology proper’ (on the rare exceptions, see below)1.
