Belarusians' Views on the Political Crisis Belarusians’ views on the political crisis Results of a public opinion poll conducted between 14 and 20 January 2021 Notes on methodology We surveyed a total of 926 respondents between 14 and 20 January 2021. Our sample’s composition corresponds to the general structure of Belarus's urban population in terms of gender, age, and the size of respondents’ town of residence. The poll was conducted using the Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) method, which in practice means that it was limited to internet users. Although various sources claim that only 75–82 percent of the population of Belarus use the web, internet users do remain more economically and socially active. Therefore, despite the fact that our sample has been weighted to accurately reflect the make-up of Belarusian society, it is possible that support for Lukashenka and his policies may be slightly higher than this poll indicates, as Lukashenka's supporters tend to be less socially and economically active than his detractors. We selected the CAWI method because the repressive nature of Belarusian legislation, as well additional risks faced by the researchers who collaborated for this study, make face-to-face interviews impossible. The statistical margin of error of our sample of 926 people (with a 95 percent confidence level) does not exceed 3.22%. All answers of all respondents are available as a SAV file. • Belarusian Opposition Presidential Candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya
Thank you, Mr. Chairman, Today my country, Belarus, is in turmoil. Peaceful protesters are being illegally detained, beaten, and imprisoned. The protests themselves started after a cynical and blatant attempt by Mr. Lukashenko to steal the votes of the people. The demands of the nation are simple: immediate termination of violence and threats by the regime, immediate release of all political prisoners, and free and fair election. There is only one obstacle to these demands being met. This obstacle is Mr. Lukashenko, a man desperately clinging onto power and refusing to listen to his people and his own state officials. A nation can not and should not be a hostage to one man's thirst for power. And it won't. Belarusians have woken up. The point of no return has passed. This is manifested by now daily demonstrations of hundreds of thousands all across Belarus, despite police brutality and blatant disregard for Belarusian laws and international norms. This is manifested by the strikes across the largest factories and state-owned companies in Belarus, despite intimidation and in some cases unlawful layoffs. This is manifested by all the strata of our society and all the political spectrum demanding the one and the same thing. The regime of Alexander Lukashenko is morally bankrupt, legally questionable and simply untenable in the eyes of our nation. The United Nations was created as a formal body of the whole international community in order to promote and encourage respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all. In 1945 Belarus was one of the founding members of the United Nations.

  • HFHR's Report on Human Rights in Belarus
Submission pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 45/1 by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights Violation of the right to defence through the prosecution of lawyers The attempts by the Belarusian authorities to repress the increased political activity of the citizens of Belarus resulted in harassment and persecution of the representatives of civil society and legal profession. The authorities widely use targeted repressions against the members of the Belarusian Bar, in particular. Those lawyers who defend civil activists and opposition members, have been removed from the Bar Association and their licenses were revoked. This prevents members of the professional community from getting involved in politically motivated cases, and from expressing their principled views in public. As a result of that practice the right to have access to legal aid and representation is not duly ensured in the Republic of Belarus. These systemic problems have been repeatedly emphasised by international organisations1 as well as NGOs2. At present, we observe the increased pressure on lawyers, including by means of criminal prosecution. The authorities of Belarus systematically violate the right to a fair trial (Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights) and Principle 16 of the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers) in Belarus. For example: ● disbarment of lawyers (Mr. Aleksandr Pylchenko, and Mrs. Yulia Levanchuk); ● criminal prosecution of lawyers (Mr. Ilia Salei, and Mr. Maxim Znak; Mrs. Lilia Vlasova); ● administrative actions against lawyers (Mrs. Liudmila Kazak); ● creation of administrative, bureaucratic and technical barriers in order to prevent the access of lawyers to their clients in administrative and criminal cases (Mr.
