He is one of the few Zoroastrian authors who wrote in Persian and whose name and scraps of biographical information have been preserved to our days. The most significant and well known of his works are Ardãya-Wrãf-nãmet, ëangranghãðe' nãme2, andQesse-ye 'lJmar Xattãb va iãhzdde'ye irãn-zamr-n3, a collection of parables on the perishable nature of this world.a All of them were written in hazaj- e mosaddas metre. For several centuries tradition ascribed to him the authorship of Zarto!çnãme (onginally Mowlûd-Zartoflt)s, but as Ch. Rempis and R. Ahfi showed in their studies published independently in 1963 and 1964, the real author was another Zoroastrian, named Kay-Kâüs b. Kay-Xosrow b. Dãrã, from the city of Ray.6 The episode of Zaratustra's biography which is the subject of Õangranghãëe- nãme, is nol found in any other source except this poem. After Zaratu$tra's religion had been successfully disseminated in the kingdom of Go5tasp, the news reached the Indian sage Õangranghãðe. This wise man is said to have been one of the teachers of GoStasp's famous counsellor Jãmãsp. ðangranghaðe summoned Zarto5t to take part in a dispute, and spent two years preparing for it. Psalms 119 & the Hebrew Aleph Bet - Part 17 The seventeenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called “Pey” (sounds like “pay”). It has the sound of “p” as in “park”. Pey has the numeric value of 80. In modern Hebrew, the letter Pey can appear in three forms: Writing the Letter: Pey Note: Most people draw the Pey in two strokes, as shown. The dot, or “dagesh” mark means the pey makes the “p” sound, as in “park”. Note: The sole difference between the letter Pey and the letter Fey is the presence or absence of the dot in the middle of the letter (called a dagesh mark). When you see the dot in the middle of this letter, pronounce it as a "p"; otherwise, pronounce it as "ph" (or “f”). Five Hebrew letters are formed differently when they appear as the last letter of a word (these forms are sometimes called "sofit" (pronounced "so-feet") forms). Fortunately, the five letters sound the same as their non-sofit cousins, so you do not have to learn any new sounds (or transliterations). The Pey (pronounced “Fey” sofit has a descending tail, as shown on the left. Pey: The Mouth, or Word The pictograph for Pey looks something like a mouth, whereas the classical Hebrew script (Ketav Ashurit) is constructed of a Kaf with an ascending Yod: Notice the “hidden Bet” within the letter Pey. This shape of the letter is required when a Torah scribe writes Torah scrolls, or mezzuzahs. From the Canaanite pictograph, the letter morphed into the Phoenician ketav Ivri, to the Greek letter (Pi), which became the Latin letter “P.” means “mouth” and by extension, “word,” “expression,” “vocalization,” and “speech”. -

The researchers have adopted two research strategies for underlining the assumed changes. This study has tried to get insight into the diminishing features of Punjabi lexicon by juxtaposing the current Punjabi lexicon with the lexicon used in the old Punjabi movies and songs. This has involved gleaning lexical items which are no longer used in the current public discourses from the old and famous Punjabi movies (Heer & MirzaSahiba) and their songs. To further substantiate the findings of the study, the researchers got a questionnaire filled by 110 educated Punjabi speakers who aged 40-50. In the questionnaire, the respondents were asked about their opinion regarding the perceived changes in Punjabi lexicon of public discourses that have occurred over the past few decades. The findings of the study reveal that there have occurred noticeable changes due to social, educational, industrial and technological advancement, and particularly the spread of electronic media in the Punjabi community in Pakistan. -

VOCATIVE LAMEDH IN THE PSALTER BY MITCHELL DAHOOD Rome The various morphemes orthographically represented by the simple letter I in Ugaritic conspire to multiply the problems of the textual critic and the exegete of the Old Testament. Before the Ras Shamra texts emerged from the earth, the Bible translator could fairly assume that every le was a preposition denoting "to" or "for" and go on his way rejoicing. But a perusal of numbers 1337-1340 in the Glossary of C. H. GORDON'S Ugaritic Textbook (Analecta Orienta- lia 38: Roma 1965) reveals that consonantal I might stand for the preposition "to, for, from", or for the negative "no" or "not", with both verbs or substantives. It might also represent the emphatic lamedh, "verily, surely", or the vocative particle "O!". J. AISTLEITNER, Wörterbuch der ugariti.rchen Sprache (Berlin 1963), p. 163, no. 1424, would also distinguish an optative particle, "es m6ge", though he admits that it might not be distinct from the emphatic or corroborative lamedb. Given the close linguistic affinities between biblical Hebrew and Ugaritic, in my opinion a Canaanite dialect of the second millenn- ium B.C., it follows that the Hebraist is now faced with basically the same problems confronting the Ugaritic specialist; when inter- preting the morpheme graphically represented by lamedh, both must weigh four or five possibilities. Of particularly frequent occurrence in the Ugaritic tablets is the vocative lamedh. In the myths it occurs frequently with divine names : lb'l, "0 Baal!", lil, "0 El !", lktr, "0 Kothar!", or with divine appellatives: lrbtajrt, "0 Lady Asherah! ", "0 Virgin Anath!", lrkb "rPt, "0 Mounter of the Clouds!". -

Why Was the Story of Arash-i Kamangir Excluded from the Shahnameh?* Saghi Gazerani Independent Scholar In contemporary Iranian culture, the legendary figure of Arash-i Kamangir, or Arash the Archer, is known and celebrated as the national hero par excellence. After all, he is willing to lay down his life by infusing his arrow with his life force in order to restore territories usurped by Iran’s enemy. As the legend goes, he does so in order to have the arrow move to the farthest point possible for the stretch of land over which the arrow flies shall be included in Iranshahr proper. The story without a doubt was popular for many centuries, but during the various upheavals of the twentieth century, the story of Arash the Archer was invoked, and in the hands of artists with various political leanings his figure was imbued with layers reflecting the respective artist’s ideological presuppositions.1 The most famous of modern renditions of Arash’s legend is Siavash Kasra’i’s narrative poem named after its protagonist.
