A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened.

The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time.

Lancashire: a Chronology of Flash Flooding
LANCASHIRE: A CHRONOLOGY OF FLASH FLOODING Introduction The past focus on the history of flooding has been mainly with respect to flooding from the overflow of rivers and with respect to the peak level that these floods have achieved. The Chronology of British Hydrological Events provides a reasonably comprehensive record of such events throughout Great Britain. Over the last 60 years the river gauging network provides a detailed record of the occurrence of river flows and peak levels and flows are summaried in HiflowsUK. However there has been recent recognition that much flooding of property occurs from surface water flooding, often far from rivers. Locally intense rainfall causes severe flooding of property and land as water concentrates and finds pathways along roads and depressions in the landscape. In addition, intense rainfall can also cause rapid rise in level and discharge in rivers causing a danger to the public even though the associated peak level is not critical. In extreme cases rapid rise in river level may be manifested as a ‘wall of water’ with near instantaneous rise in level of a metre or more. Such events are usually convective and may be accompanied by destructive hail or cause severe erosion of hillsides and agricultural land. There have been no previous compilations of historical records of such ‘flash floods’or even of more recent occurrences. It is therefore difficult to judge whether a recent event is unusual or even unique in terms of the level reached at a particular location or more broadly of regional severity. This chronology of flash floods is provided in order to enable comparisons to be made between recent and historical floods, to judge rarity and from a practical point of view to assess the adequacy of urban drainage networks.

History of the Wigan Flashes By Dr Mark Champion and Patricia Rigg Introduction – what is a flash? The Wigan Flashes, as we know them, are a result of the mining subsidence which happened around the year 1902. The history of the development of the Wigan Flashes needs to look at the industrial activity on the site and how this has changed the landscape. The coming of the canals, the railways and the development of industrial scale mining in the 19th century, have all helped to produce the landscape that we see now. The nature of “Long Wall Mining” lead to rapid collapse of the abandoned collieries. Indeed, the word “flashes” refers to the formation of the lakes by flash flooding after the subsidence. Pre-industrial land use The land prior to the impact of the coal mining industry was mainly agricultural, with many areas of peaty mossland occurring. These were part of the Ince Moss complex, stretching over much of the area between Bryn and Hindley. It is likely that the area is similar to that still found near Astley Green, with a mixture of fields with grazing livestock and some barley grown. This included small copses, marshes and wet areas. In this landscape there were a number of farmhouses, halls and buildings, which have been lost over time. These included Westwood House and Hawkley Hall (see below).

Professional and Academic Journal articles about the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway In 2013 a small team of LYRS members started to read through all the editions of The Engineer held electronically by ‘Grace’s Guide’. When we started we had access to issues of The Engineer from 1856 to 1930 – that’s nearly 4000 issues. We noted the main points of each reference to the LYR, its predecessor, the companies it took over, and its people. This is the result of our work: nearly 2,500 references from The Engineer and The Electrical Review (there are fewer editions of The Electrical Review on line, and they are not all in the same place). Searching This is a fully searchable pdf file. In most pdf readers you should press Ctrl F. This should bring a small search window onto your screen. North Eastern Railway Civil Engineering Drawings List Description: The collection includes a minority of architectural plans, along with drawings of structures such as bridges and viaducts, maps of permanent way routes and alterations, signalling plans and diagrams, with a variety of miscellaneous components for structures and infrastructure. The collection comprises approximately 3500 plans, diagrams and maps on paper, wax linen and linen- backed cartridge paper. System of arrangement: The original arrangement of the drawings has been lost and they derive from a wide variety of applications within the architectural and civil engineering genres. The drawings have therefore been listed in the rolls in which they were found, and every effort made to record the variety of numbering systems used at different times by the railway company departments involved in creating and storing the drawings, representative of the different types of drawing. There is no one single and consistent numbering arrangement. Physical Characteristics: The drawings survive in a variety of formats and sizes – there are wax linen tracings, colour washed linenbacked original office drawings, drawings on cartridge paper, blueprints and other copying processes. Administrative/Biographical History: The North Eastern Railway Company was formed in 1854 as an amalgamation of the York & North Midland Railway, the Leeds Northern Railway and the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. It continued to absorb other companies in the north eastern region of England over subsequent decades, including the Stockton & Darlington Railway, South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway and the West Hartlepool Railway. In 1923 the various railway companies of the United Kingdom were grouped into four large amalgamations.
