North Eastern Railway Civil Engineering Drawings List Description: The collection includes a minority of architectural plans, along with drawings of structures such as bridges and viaducts, maps of permanent way routes and alterations, signalling plans and diagrams, with a variety of miscellaneous components for structures and infrastructure. The collection comprises approximately 3500 plans, diagrams and maps on paper, wax linen and linen- backed cartridge paper. System of arrangement: The original arrangement of the drawings has been lost and they derive from a wide variety of applications within the architectural and civil engineering genres. The drawings have therefore been listed in the rolls in which they were found, and every effort made to record the variety of numbering systems used at different times by the railway company departments involved in creating and storing the drawings, representative of the different types of drawing. There is no one single and consistent numbering arrangement. Physical Characteristics: The drawings survive in a variety of formats and sizes – there are wax linen tracings, colour washed linenbacked original office drawings, drawings on cartridge paper, blueprints and other copying processes. Administrative/Biographical History: The North Eastern Railway Company was formed in 1854 as an amalgamation of the York & North Midland Railway, the Leeds Northern Railway and the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. It continued to absorb other companies in the north eastern region of England over subsequent decades, including the Stockton & Darlington Railway, South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway and the West Hartlepool Railway. In 1923 the various railway companies of the United Kingdom were grouped into four large amalgamations. The North Eastern Railway became part of the London & North Eastern Railway Company, alongside other companies with close geographical links to the East Coast Main Line from London to Scotland. Among these other companies those most closely related to the North Eastern Railway geographically were the North British Railway, Great Northern Railway, Great Central Railway and the Hull & Barnsley Railway. In 1947 the four major companies were nationalised and the former LNER became part of British Railways, divided into regions for administrative purposes. The North Eastern Region of British Railways is the one relevant to this collection of drawings, particularly the Architects’ Department and Civil Engineering Department based in offices at York. The various constituent companies at different times and in various ways employed architects and civil engineers, sometimes from external sources and increasingly from among specialist departments under their own control. These went through various stages of re-organisation and re-structuring as amalgamations progressed. The Architects’ Department dealt mainly with buildings, such as housing, stations and warehouses. The Civil Engineers’ Department dealt mainly with infrastructure, such as permanent way, signalling, bridges, tunnels, viaducts and similar structures. The York offices of these departments tended to cover the region from Berwick to Doncaster and between the north east coast and the Pennines, and this is reflected in the contents of this collection of drawings. The drawings themselves cover a wide range of applications. A minority of the collection includes architectural drawings for company housing, stations and other railway-related buildings. The majority of the collection comprises civil engineering drawings of items such as bridges, viaducts and culverts. Signalling and track diagrams, as well Ordnance Survey maps, also form a considerable proportion of the collection.
