file IL COMBO v2 for PDF.doc updated 13-12-2006 THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE The Quarterly Journal of THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE SOCIETY COMBINED INDEX of Volumes 1 to 7 1976 – 1996 IL No.1 to No.79 PROVISIONAL EDITION www.industrial-loco.org.uk IL COMBO v2 for PDF.doc updated 13-12-2006 INTRODUCTION and ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This “Combo Index” has been assembled by combining the contents of the separate indexes originally created, for each individual volume, over a period of almost 30 years by a number of different people each using different approaches and methods. The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time. Final presentation arrangement and publication of this Combo has been handled by Vic Bradley, who also had the pleasurable task of co-ordinating the work of the willing team of volunteers. THIS COMBO INDEX <will be, we hope> available free of charge as a fully searchable “Acrobat PDF” file download from the ILS website. Alternatively, for those who have computers but are unable to download, the PDF <will be> available on floppy disc <more likely on CD> for a nominal price of £x. Once loaded onto a computer the index can be viewed and digitally “searched” using the free program “Acrobat Reader” (version 5 or later), and can be printed from that program onto A4 paper and then bound in any form you wish. Floppy discs /CD can be duplicated by the purchaser without restriction, for distribution to others. To purchase a disc copy send a £x cheque, payable to INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE SOCIETY, to V.J.Bradley. 17 Stretton Farm Road, Church Stretton, Shropshire, SY6 6DX. For those without computers, an A4 printed and ring-bound version is available. An order form for this can be obtained from <Sales officer, with his email and post address> THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE Glossy, A5 format, illustrated with photographs, maps and drawings, appears four times per annum building up to volumes of 10 issues over 30 months, recent volumes containing an average of around 360 pages. The content consists of carefully researched material and discussion, mainly concerning industrial and contractors' steam locomotives located both in the British Isles and Overseas, and continues to build up to being a valuable tool for researchers of the genre. Hence early issues can (and do) prove to be as useful as the latest issue. The magazine is issued free to ILS members, and is available for purchase by non-members, either as individual issues or by annual subscription. Enquiries re a IL subscription, re the purchase of available back-issues, and re the purchase of photocopies of out-of-print issues, should all be addressed to the Sales Officer Mr , at , , enclosing a stamped addressed envelope for reply, or by email to THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE INTRODUCTION Volumes 1 to 7 1976–1996 PROVISIONAL EDITION COMBO INDEX page 2 CONTENTS This Combo Index is sectionalised in similar style as that used by recent individual volume indexes. Section 1a lists GB/UK Firms and Individuals concerned with loco ownership, operation, etc., with their specific location names, and also includes Articles by their title. Section 1b is a geographical index to Section 1a. Section 2 lists Overseas items transferred from Section 1a. Section 3 lists all illustrations, maps, and drawings. Sections 5 and 6 lists include GB/UK and Overseas items. Some volume indexes had a section listing railway companies. Any such sections have now been incorporated into Section 1a (or 2), as in the more recent volume indexes. Coverage and Presentation of Index Contents has varied from time to time, and in order to suit a Combo product, some re-arrangement and re-indexing has been necessary. This brought numerous errors and omissions to light, and these have been corrected within this Combo. In order that the IL page numbers given in the Combo remain meaningful, the volume they refer to has to be indicated in some way. The logical way would be to give the “Vol No.” but this introduces potential confusion between volume numbers and page numerals. Thus a single letter code (avoiding letter I – looks like one 1, and letter O could look like a zero) has been used for each volume, and this appears as a BOLD prefix to (maybe strings of) page numbers throughout the indexing. A “volume key” <will be> at the top of each page. A breakdown of the volumes themselves appears on pages 4 and 5, and is repeated at the end as a “tear out” page – this breakdown clarifies the system, and enables any indexed page number to be traced to its individual magazine, for the benefit of those who have their IL loose rather than bound. CORRIGENDA. During re-sorting and re-indexing, various errors (mostly spelling and numeric "typos") in the magazines themselves have come to light. Those considered critical have the corrected version appearing with Highlighting in this Combo. Less critical errors have simply been amended. Any editorial comments appear in < > brackets. DUPLICATE ENTRIES may survive, for who is to know if “J.Brown” (in volume 4) and “Joseph Brown” (in volume 10) are the same, or a different, person ? Some have been looked up, and the Combo has had new information added to many entries, to clarify their meaning. We invite index-users to draw any other anomalies to our attention, for future Combo improvement and updating. Either send by post to the Church Stretton address on page 2 or, easier and cheaper, by email to [email protected] Vic Bradley THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE INTRODUCTION Volumes 1 to 7 1976–1996 PROVISIONAL EDITION COMBO INDEX page 3 Pagination of Magazines and Key to Combo Indexes In the Combo Index Tables, item page numbers are pre-fixed with a bold letter which denotes the Volume of the magazine that that page number relates to. Letters have been used, rather than Volume numbers, to avoid possible confusion that could arise if page numbers were prefixed by a numeral. The following table identifies the Volume Index Letters, and also identifies which individual issue, of the magazine, that any page number relates to. A key to the volume letters appears at the top of each listing page.
