Annotated list of Acts of Parliament relating to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Compiled by Mike Fitton This is a work in progress. The basic listing is believed to be complete, but the annotations require a lot more work. Updated versions will be made available as significant additions are made to the text. I would be grateful if errors and omissions can be brought to my attention. VERSION OF 31 MAY 2013 Notes: The basic list was derived from John Marshall’s history, The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, Volume 2, Appendix 2 (annotated ‘JM x’, where x is the number of the subsection within the Appendix. The availability of Marshall’s listing considerably speeded up the completion of the present list. Additional information was gleaned from the Office of Public Sector Information website at http://www.opsi.gov.uk/chron-tables/local/index Entries were then further checked and augmented from copies of the acts themselves (when marked MGF). It must be remembered that although an Act confers powers to do certain things there is no guarantee that they were actually done! An Act was the final outcome of the Parliamentary process and other documentation (the Bill, Deposited Plans, Proofs of Evidence, and Minutes of Evidence) may include valuable relevant information. The most important are probably the Deposited Plans (copies of which had to be deposited locally as well as with Parliament) because they are usually referred to in the Act. Note that Bills and Proofs of Evidence often went through several drafts, so a surviving copy may not be the final version. Entries are in chronological order. Arrangement and content of entries: The official ‘short title’, as authorised in the Act itself, is given first. Where this differs between sources all versions are given pending a view of a copy of the Act. The second line gives the date of Royal Assent (format dd.mm.yyyy, for example, 23.08.1831) and the Parliamentary reference (years of the reign of the monarch in that calendar year and chapter number, for example, 1 & 2 Will. 4. Ch. lx), together with the number of pages (when a copy has been seen). All the Acts are ‘Local’ Acts and the normal convention of referring to the chapter numbers of Local Acts using lower case Roman numerals is followed (to distinguish them from Public General Acts and Private/Personal Acts). The third section indicates subsequent Acts which affect the Act, for example, repeals, extensions of time, etc. This information is taken from http://www.legislation.gov.uk/changes/chron-tables/local and has not been checked and may have errors and omissions. The website has useful additional guidance and explanation, including a listing of libraries and record offices which have copies of Local Acts. In the fullness of time, following review of a copy, a fourth section will be added, providing a summary of the provisions of the Act. In the meantime Marshall’s appendix can be consulted for very basic information. List of Acts: Manchester, Bury and Bolton Canal Act, 1791 13.05.1791 31 Geo. 3.
