Ranging from shacks to cottages Kollman,1834 to villas, dachas have reflected changes in property ownership throughout Russian history. In 1894, the year Chekhov wrote The Seagull, dachas were more commonly owned by the “new rich” than ever before. The characters in The Seagull more likely represent the class of the intelligencia: artists, authors, and actors. FUN FACTS Dachas have strong connections with nature, bringing farming and gardening to city folk. A higher class Russian vacation home or estate was called a Usad’ba. In 1861, Tsar Alexander II abolished serfdom in Russia, and the middle class was able to purchase dwellings built on dachas. These people were called dachniki. Chekhov ridiculed dashniki. ARCHITECTURE Neoclassicism represented intelligence An example of 19th century and culture, so aristocrats of this time neoclassical architecture attempted to reflect this in their architecture. Features of neoclassical architecture include geometric forms, simplicity in structure, grand scales, dramatic use of Greek columns, Roman details, and French windows. Sorin’s estate includes French windows, and likely other elements of neoclassical style. Boys and Girls by Alice Munro My father was a fox farmer. That is, he raised silver foxes, in pens; and in the fall and early winter, when their fur was prime, he killed them and skinned them and sold their pelts to the Hudson's Bay Company or the Montreal Fur Traders. These companies supplied us with heroic calendars to hang, one on each side of the kitchen door. Against a background of cold blue sky and black pine forests and treacherous northern rivers, plumed adventures planted the flags of England and or of France; magnificent savages bent their backs to the portage. For several weeks before Christmas, my father worked after supper in the cellar of our house. The cellar was whitewashed, and lit by a hundred-watt bulb over the worktable. My brother Laird and I sat on the top step and watched. My father removed the pelt inside-out from the body of the fox, which looked surprisingly small, mean, and rat-like, deprived of its arrogant weight of fur. The naked, slippery bodies were collected in a sack and buried in the dump. One time the hired man, Henry Bailey, had taken a swipe at me with this sack, saying, "Christmas present!" My mother thought that was not funny. In fact she disliked the whole pelting operation--that was what the killing, skinning, and preparation of the furs was called – and wished it did not have to take place in the house. There was the smell. After the pelt had been stretched inside-out on a long board my father scraped away delicately, removing the little clotted webs of blood vessels, the bubbles of fat; the smell of blood and animal fat, with the strong primitive odour of the fox itself, penetrated all parts of the house. -

Anton Chekhov Analysis By Ryan Funes If you were to have gone out on the street and asked anyone about Mark Twain, William Shakespear, or even F. Scott Fitzgerald, you may get a positive response from the person, in that they know of the person. But, if you were to have asked about Anton Chekhov, you would probably get a dumbfounded, confused response. I would not be surprised though by those results, since Chekhov did not really have anything iconic about him or any gimmick, but when I was introduced to his short stories, I was immediatley hooked in by his themes and writing style. I really did not know what to say about the guy, but after reading and looking into his life, he was definitely a skilled dramatist, satirist, and writer. For those who are not too familiar with his life, Anton Chekhov was born in 1860, Taganrog, Russia to the son of a serf and a merchants wife. He lived a fairly well childhood and also did well in school, as he did continue on to become a medical student, and at the same time, an author who started out as a columnist for a Moscow newspaper. While his first short stories were not well recieved at first, along with a bloody play of his being under heavy censorship at the time, he continued on with his writing career, even while under the pressure of supporting his family, whose health was deterring. But, as a result of his writings, Chekhov became well known for his wit and subtle satire in his early writings. -

Women and Work in the Middle Ages Pat Knapp / Monika von Zell Modern historians are beginning to discover that medieval women made a significant contribution to the economy of the medieval world. In past histories, women were either ignored by men or taken for granted. Neither religious nor romantic literature gives us an accurate accounting of the activities of the real medieval woman. Today, letters, wills, business and legal documents, convent, manor and census records and manuscript illuminations are used to complete our concept of the world of medieval women. It is hoped that this study will assist the female members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. with their persona research and their attempts to become real medieval women. For women in the Middle Ages played an active role in medieval society, although their economic efforts were affected by their social class, marital status and by the place and time in which they lived. Within the three estates are five groups of women which shall be examined: First—Women from the class that was landed and free; the husband possessed some land and was relatively free of the control of the manorial lord. here we find the yeoman's wife, the knight's wife, the lady of the manor. Second—Religious women. Women from the upper classes, and women of the noble and knightly families, as well as those from well-to-do merchant families, were the principal sources of vocations. Third—Women whose families provided the free burgesses; the citizens of the towns. Chaucer's Wife of Bath was a free townswoman. -

Chekhov’s novella A Boring Story: From an old man’s journal 1, provides a rich stimulus for reflecting upon the practice of teaching in higher education. The narrator’s beliefs about academia, science and medicine alongside his tacit theories of learning and encounters with students and colleagues are reflected upon and speculated upon in light of contemporary teaching practice and pedagogic literature. Autobiographic approaches are widely employed (e.g. Vazir 2006; Song and Taylor 2005; Roy and Eales 2010; see also Brookfield 1995); the experience of the ill academic medical teacher has also been written about (Krmpotić 2003). Tan (2006) uses the fictional medium of the film to promote reflection. -

TRANSLATION Aleksandr Chekhov In Melikhovo Translated by Eugene Alper This translation came about as the result of a surprise. A few years ago I noticed in amazement that despite the all-pervasive interest in everything and anything related to Anton Chekhov, among the multiple translations of his stories and plays, among the many biographies, research papers, and monographs describing his life in minute details and spliting hairs over the provenance of his characters, amidst the lively and bubbly pond of chekhovedenie, there was a lacuna: a number of memoirs about Chekhov writen by people closest to him were not available in English. Since then I have translated a couple of them—About Chekhov by his personal physician Isaac Altshuller (in Chekhov the Immigrant: Translating a Cultural Icon, Michael C. Finke, Julie de Sherbinin, eds., Slavica, 2007) and Anton Chekhov: A Brother’s Memoir by his younger brother Mikhail, Palgrave Macmillan, 2009, as have other translators, the most recent being Peter Sekirin’s Memories of Chekhov (McFarland, 2011)—but there is still more to be done. The book by Chekhov’s sister Maria, for one, remains unavailable to the English reader. The following translation of a memoir by Chekhov’s older brother Alek- sandr is aiming to place another litle patch over the gap. Aleksandr Chekhov (1855-1913) was an accomplished writer in his own right; although never rising to Anton’s level of celebrity (very few could), his short stories, essays, and articles were published regularly during his lifetime. This memoir—one of several writen by Aleksandr following Anton’s death in 1904—was published in 1911. -

In contrast, Goldthwaite had a steady to $5 lower market on wool lambs while the hair sheep offerings were called steady. Fredericksburg’s mar- ket was steady on all classes as compared to last week. Lamb and mutton meat production for the week end- ing February 16 totaled 2.7 million pounds on a slaughter head count of 39,000 head as compared to 2.6 million pounds on a head count equal to the previous week’s total. Imported lamb and mutton for the week ending February 9 totaled 1846 metric tons or about 4.07 million pounds equaling about 155 percent of the domestic production for the same period. San Angelo feeder lambs averaging 67 pounds brought $206. Limited direct trade on feeder lambs in California included a load of new crop lambs weighing 85-90 pounds that brought $205 f.o.b. Lim- ited direct trade in Montana had a few lambs weighing 50-60 pounds bringing $205, CONSERVATION efforts are sometimes hard to mea- 60-70 pounds were $221-234, sure but with the help of record amounts of moisture 70-80 pounds were $201- the benefi ts of aggressive brush control are clear. -

Works on peasant culture ignore animals, and works on animals neglect their place in rural lives. This article, based on the depiction of pre- modern peasant and village life in hundreds of local-color novels and stories of the early nine- teenth century, begins to fill in this gap in animal studies scholarship. It reveals that many of the defining boundaries between humans and animals introduced in the ideologies of modernity are fuzzy, fluid, or indeed nonexistent in premodernity, where animals are seen as subjects, compan- ions, and, often, parts of the family. Hundreds of sto- ries and novels were produced in this “local-color” tradition, to which my studies European Local-Color Literature (Donovan, 2010) and New England Local Color Literature (Donovan, 1988) provide an introduction.1 The move- ment flourished in the 1840s in Europe and later—until around 1900—in the United States.
