Gender roles Gender roles are the practices, activities and responsibilities that we adopt on the basis of what society expects from us. These are assumptions, or expectations, about what men and boys should do, and what women and girls should do at home and in society. Gender roles influence people’s behaviour, responsibilities, life choices and chances. Expectations on how we should behave start from a young age. This happens by watching how the adults at home and around us interact with each other, as well as from watching television and other media, and our wider communities. PREFACE The material for " The Rulers of Strathspey" was originally collected by the Author for the article on Ogilvie-Grant, Earl of Seafield, in The Scots Peerage, edited by Sir James Balfour Paul, Lord Lyon King of Arms. A great deal of the information collected had to be omitted OAving to lack of space. It was thought desirable to publish it in book form, especially as the need of a Genealogical History of the Clan Grant had long been felt. It is true that a most valuable work, " The Chiefs of Grant," by Sir William Fraser, LL.D., was privately printed in 1883, on too large a scale, however, to be readily accessible. The impression, moreover, was limited to 150 copies. This book is therefore published at a moderate price, so that it may be within reach of all the members of the Clan Grant, and of all who are interested in the records of a race which has left its mark on Scottish history and the history of the Highlands. The Chiefs of the Clan, the Lairds of Grant, who succeeded to the Earldom of Seafield and to the extensive lands of the Ogilvies, Earls of Findlater and Seafield, form the main subject of this work. -

'Slut I Hate You': a Critical Discourse Analysis of Gendered Conflict On
1 ‘Slut I hate you’: A Critical Discourse Analysis of gendered conflict on YouTube Sagredos Christos, Nikolova Evelin Abstract Research on gendered conflict, including language aggression against women has tended to focus on the analysis of discourses that sustain violence against women, disregarding counter-discourses on this phenomenon. Adopting a Critical Discourse Analysis perspective, this paper draws on the Discourse Historical Approach to examine the linguistic and discursive strategies involved in the online conflict that emerges from the polarisation of discourses on violence against women. An analysis of 2,304 consecutive YouTube comments posted in response to the sexist Greek song Καριόλα σε μισώ ‘Slut I hate you’ revealed that conflict revolves around five main topics: (a) gendered aggression, (b) the song, (c) the singer, (d) other users’ reactions to the song and (e) contemporary socio-political concerns. Findings also suggest that commenters favouring patriarchal gender ideologies differ in the lexicogrammatical choices and discursive strategies they employ from those who challenge them. Introduction The proliferation of online public spaces through social media can among others be seen as some kind of opening the “access to prestigious discourse types” and, therefore, as offering a greater or lesser potential for “democratisation of public discourse” (Fairclough 1992, 201). However, there is little consensus about the democratic potential afforded by such new technologies. While some focus on the plurality of voices that are allowed to be heard and the diverse identities that may gain visibility, others highlight that anonymity in digitally mediated communication may foster a feeling of unaccountability, thus reinforcing online incivility and polarisation of ideas (Garcés-Conejos Blitvich 2010; Papacharissi 2009; van Zoonen et al. -

Anton Chekhov Analysis By Ryan Funes If you were to have gone out on the street and asked anyone about Mark Twain, William Shakespear, or even F. Scott Fitzgerald, you may get a positive response from the person, in that they know of the person. But, if you were to have asked about Anton Chekhov, you would probably get a dumbfounded, confused response. I would not be surprised though by those results, since Chekhov did not really have anything iconic about him or any gimmick, but when I was introduced to his short stories, I was immediatley hooked in by his themes and writing style. I really did not know what to say about the guy, but after reading and looking into his life, he was definitely a skilled dramatist, satirist, and writer. For those who are not too familiar with his life, Anton Chekhov was born in 1860, Taganrog, Russia to the son of a serf and a merchants wife. He lived a fairly well childhood and also did well in school, as he did continue on to become a medical student, and at the same time, an author who started out as a columnist for a Moscow newspaper. While his first short stories were not well recieved at first, along with a bloody play of his being under heavy censorship at the time, he continued on with his writing career, even while under the pressure of supporting his family, whose health was deterring. But, as a result of his writings, Chekhov became well known for his wit and subtle satire in his early writings. -

‘Titanium’ David Guetta (feat. Sia) ‘Titanium’ | David Guetta (feat. Sia) ‘Titanium’ was a number one hit for French DJ and music producer David Guetta, featuring vocals from Australian singer Sia. Initially released digitally as one of four promotional singles for the album Nothing but the Beat in August 2011, the hit was o!cially released as the fourth single from the album in December of that same year. ‘Titanium’ was well received in many of the top music markets worldwide, achieving number 1s in four countries and top 10s in an incredible twenty "ve countries across the globe. #e single was met with positive reviews, with many claiming it to be the show stopper of the album thanks to Sia’s collaboration on lyrics and phenomenal vocal performance. Described as “epic and energising”, ‘Titanium’ was musically likened to the works of Coldplay and Sia’s vocal was compared to that of Fergie.
