Allereerst mijn promotor Robert von Friedeburg, voor de kans die hij mij heeft gegeven om te promoveren. Michel Reinders stelde zonder enige bedenkingen zijn onderzoeksgegevens over 1672 beschikbaar, wat mij veel energie en tijd heeft bespaard. In Jaap Nieuwstraten en Jan Hartman trof ik twee bijzondere kamergenoten, altijd bereid hun kennis en volle boekenkasten te delen, maar met wie ik gelukkig ook over meer dan alleen werk kon praten. Dat geldt ook voor Aart Noordzij en Theo Pronk. Koen van Loon en Edda Frankot waren in de laatste fase van mijn promotietraject aangenaam gezelschap, waarbij Edda extra dank verdient voor haar hulp bij de Engelstalige samenvatting. Bij Jan Waszink kon ik terecht voor vragen over Latijn in pamfletten, en hij was een prettige collega om drie jaar on- derwijs mee te verzorgen. Ook Henk Nellen bood altijd zijn hulp aan, in het geval van Latijn, maar ook bij andere vragen of problemen. Siep Stuurman en Pieter Spierenburg voorzagen namens de Vaste Commissie van Wetenschapsbeoefening mijn onderzoek van nuttig commen- taar. Ik dank Henk Nellen, Judith Pollmann en Niek van Sas voor hun bereidheid plaats te ne- men in de beoordelingscommissie van mijn proefschrift. Tijdens mijn studie Maatschappijgeschiedenis zijn Rudolf Dekker, Jan van Herwaar- den en Paul van de Laar belangrijk geweest voor mijn interesse in de historische wetenschap, en daarvoor verdienen zij nog steeds waardering. Net als mijn studententijd heb ik ook mijn werk als promovendus aan de Faculteit der Historische en Kunstwetenschappen (inmiddels omgedoopt tot Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication) van de Erasmus Uni- versiteit Rotterdam als een zeer prettige tijd ervaren. Dat is vooral te danken aan mijn mede- promovendi (en andere collega’s), de vele gezamenlijke lunches en gesprekken over onder- zoek, onderwijs en ook andere zaken. Met Marten Boon kon ik op de squashbaan de spanning en drukte van het promoveren van me af slaan. Jiska Engelbert ken ik al sinds de lagere school. Het was een grote verrassing haar als collega te treffen aan de FHKW. Onze gesprekken over verleden, heden en toekomst waren behalve altijd gezellig ook een belangrijke steun. Buiten de eigen universiteit dank ik mijn Huizinga-collega’s Marianne Eekhout, David van der Linden en Jasper van der Steen. Het was zeer waardevol met promovendi van andere universiteiten ervaringen te kunnen delen. Ik kijk met veel plezier, en ook met trots, terug op onze activiteiten in de afgelopen vier jaar. Veel van het werk voor dit proefschrift heb ik gedaan terwijl ik naar muziek luisterde. Deze muziek kwam meestal uit de collectie van de Centrale Discotheek Rotterdam (CDR), waar ik mij nog altijd welkom voel. Ik bedank mijn vroegere CDR-collega’s voor blijvende vriendschap, in het bijzonder Dina Siwoeh. Emiel Efdée dank ik voor het omslagontwerp. Met een inleidend essay en een handleiding voor de gebruiker door Dr. H. van der Hoeven (’s-Gravenhage 1889-1920; herdruk Utrecht 1978). vi 1. Inleiding 1.1 Introductie In de Nederlandse geschiedenis staan de jaren tachtig van de achttiende eeuw bekend als de ‘patriottentijd’. Het bekendste citaat van iemand die zich patriot noemde werd echter meer dan anderhalve eeuw eerder uitgesproken. Op 13 mei 1619 sprak Johan van Olden- barnevelt, landsadvocaat van Holland, zijn beroemde (bijna) laatste woorden vanaf het schavot op het Binnenhof in Den Haag: ‘Mannen, gelooft niet dat ick een lantverrader ben; ick hebbe oprecht en vroom gehandeldt, als een goed patriot, ende die sal ick sterven’.1 Enkele momenten later werd de 71-jarige Oldenbarnevelt, veroordeeld wegens hoogver- raad, met één slag onthoofd en verdween het stoffelijk overschot van wellicht ‘Nederlands grootste staatsman ooit’ in een haastig in elkaar getimmerde kist, om begraven te worden op een tot op de dag van vandaag onbekende plek.2 De executie van Oldenbarnevelt vorm- de het dramatisch hoogtepunt van de Bestandstwisten, het conflict tijdens het Twaalfjarig Bestand (1609-1612) dat begon als een theologische discussie aan de universiteit van Lei- den maar uitgroeide tot een politieke strijd, waarbij Oldenbarnevelt en stadhouder en prins van Oranje Maurits van Nassau (1567-1625), en de facties die zij vertegenwoordigden, te- genover elkaar waren komen te staan. Het conflict bracht de nog jonge Republiek aan de rand van een burgeroorlog, en toonde dat de zeven verenigde provinciën niet zo verenigd waren als gedacht. Oldenbarnevelt was niet de enige die zich een patriot noemde in de jaren 1618- 1619. Zo gebruikte Maurits’ neef Willem Lodewijk (1560-1620), stadhouder van Friesland en Groningen en een overtuigd calvinist, het woord patriot regelmatig in zijn correspon- dentie met Maurits. Voor Willem Lodewijk was patriot duidelijk verbonden met het Oran- jehuis.3 Maar ook in de vele pamfletten die tijdens de Bestandstwisten verschenen, werd het woord patriot veelvuldig gebruikt, en niet alleen door de aanhangers van de prins van Oranje. Vaak werd het voorzien van een adjectief zoals ‘goed’, ‘waar’, ‘trouw’ en ‘op- recht’, en regelmatig in combinatie met het woord vaderland. This dissertation argues that this massacre remains such an unique event in Dutch history, that it needs thorough investigation. Historians have focused on short-term political causes for the eruption of violence on the brothers’ fatal day. This work contributes to the existing historiography by uncovering more long-term political and social undercurrents in Dutch society. In doing so, issues that may have been overlooked previously are taken into consideration as well.

(Pindar) Water. There's too much of it, or too little. It's too salty, or too sweet. It wells up from the ground, carves itself a way through the land, and then it's called a river or a stream. It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters.

Complex objects such as media systems—understood here as processes, or ele- ments in a composition as much as “things”—have become informational as much as physical, but without losing any of their fundamental materiality. Fuller looks at this multi- plicitous materiality—how it can be sensed, made use of, and how it makes other possibilities tangible. He investi- gates the ways the different qualities in media systems can be said to mix and interrelate, and, as he writes, “to produce patterns, dangers, and potentials.” Fuller draws on texts by Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze, as well as writings by Friedrich Nietzsche, Marshall McLuhan, Donna Haraway, Friedrich Kittler, and others, to define and extend the idea of “media ecology.” Arguing that the only way to find out about what happens new media/technology when media systems interact is to carry out such interac- tions, Fuller traces a series of media ecologies—“taking every path in a labyrinth simultaneously,” as he describes one chapter. Alcune osservazioni su sovranità, jus circa sacra e fundamentalia fidei * Gregorio Baldin Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia [email protected] Abstract Hugo Grotius’ correspondence names frequently Paolo Sarpi. Grotius knew some of Sarpi’s texts, but his discovery of the Venetian friar dates back to the late 1620s, when he had already written his most important philosophico- political works. Nevertheless, some of Grotius’ texts, in particular the De Imperio Summarum Potestarum circa Sacra (written between 1614 and 1617), show significant analogies with Sarpi’s ideas. To understand these analogies, it is necessary to glance at the political and cultural milieu of the early 17 th -century Europe, when important political and religious events happened. The political and religious scenarios of the Republic of Venice and the United Provinces let us understand the reasons for some of the similarities between the writings of Sarpi and that of Grotius, but they also explain the reasons of their different orientations about the Synod of Dordrecht. However, Grotius and Sarpi evidently agree on some important topics, like irenicism, and the opposition to dogmatic disputes, but they especially share a particular concept of sovereignty, and of the jus circa sacra which must pertain to sovereign authority.
