  • Henri H. Stahl's Contribution to the Sociological Monographs of the Bucharest School of Sociology
UTOPIA CONSTRUCTIVĂ A MONOGRAFIEI HENRI H. STAHL’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS OF THE BUCHAREST SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY ALINA JURAVLE* ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to shed light onto Henri H. Stahl’s contribution to the sociological monographs that were the core of the Bucharest School of Sociology’s activity. Stahl is presented as an active member of the School, bringing into it his own background and abilities, distinct or shared views, values and interests and then impacting it through his actions which, combined with other factors, distinctively change and shape its development. As such, the study is also not an attempt to summarize his theoretical developments and to compare and place them in rapport with those of other social scientists. The purpose of this study is to expose at least partially the degree to which the knowledge that Stahl generates and uses differs in shape and contents from that of Dimitrie Gusti, regarding the manner in which it is used in his course towards a certain role and status in the School, the manner in which his course in the School develops, and the manner in which his personal characteristics and options, group and organizational developments and the wider social context interact in order to shape published sociological knowledge. Keywords: Henri H. Stahl, sociological monographs, Bucharest School of Sociology, knowledge. THE SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPH – THEORY, METHOD, PRINTED SCIENTIFIC RESULT The following study is an attempt to shed light onto Henri H. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes.

  • Sociological Monographs and the Rural Sociological Atlas
SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS AND THE RURAL SOCIOLOGICAL ATLAS TOWARDS A METHODOLOGY OF RURAL RESEARCH VERONICA DUMITRAŞCU The Institute of Sociology of the Romanian Academy This article attempts to realize a radiography of rural life through the inventory of some research methods and techniques in the Romanian rural communities. The sociological monographs, including the sociological rural atlas, were the epitome of Gustian sociology. The research of the social reality function of some key aspects – economic, political, religious level – would provide a more comprehensive perspective to isolated elements that, otherwise, cannot make up a complete picture of the Romanian village. Hence, the monograph brings unity to past and present realities. The dynamic character of sociology, focused on by the Sociological School of Bucharest can be tapped into nowadays too. The sociologist is called forth more than ever to interfere in the social life. In this case, the methodological tool is very useful. Through the Social Atlas, the problems of rural communities can be diagnosed and can be foreseen and thus some serious problems which take place in a social dimension can be averted. Hence, the Social Atlas project is very useful for the research of rural life, the books of maps which compose this research tool capturing the progress of social change. “Sociological studies teach us to discover and to understand the historical truth that the village is the sanctuary where the manifestation of life of the Romanian people took refuge and endured (…); the village is the embodiment of the Romanian life in a small edge of humanity. Through pantheist tenacity, the village is the keeper of the metaphysical relations of the nation with eternity.

  • Tudor Bugnariu Şi Un Proiect Eşuat De Reinstituţionalizare a Sociologiei În România Comunistă
TUDOR BUGNARIU ŞI UN PROIECT EŞUAT DE REINSTITUŢIONALIZARE A SOCIOLOGIEI ÎN ROMÂNIA COMUNISTĂ ŞTEFAN BOSOMITU∗ ABSTRACT TUDOR BUGNARIU AND A FAILED PROJECT TO RE-INSTITUTIONALIZE SOCIOLOGY IN COMMUNIST ROMANIA After the establishment of the Soviet-type Communist regime in Romania, sociology – a discipline with an important interwar tradition –, was to be labeled as “bourgeois” and subsequently banned. Political repression and the ideological inflexibility of the Communist regime delayed the re-institutionalization of the discipline for almost two decades. The rehabilitation of sociology occurred only in the early 1960s, in a political and cultural context which allowed it. The process that led to the revival of the discipline in the late 1950s and early 1960s confronted with various initiatives and actors, but the political power was the one that admitted and “validated” the re-institutionalization. This article will discuss one of the projects which aimed a reconsideration of sociology – addressed by Tudor Bugnariu, Marxist philosopher, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, and member of the clandestine Communist Party in the 1930s. Bugnariu’s project was an interesting case since it intended to link the new Romanian Marxist sociology to its prewar tradition (i.e. Bucharest Sociological School). The article also highlights the main reasons for which Tudor Bugnariu’s project failed. Keywords: history of sociology, Marxist sociology, Communist regime, re-institutionalization, Communist intellectuals. ∗ The Institute for the Investigation of the Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile, Bucharest, Romania; e-mail: [email protected]. „Revista română de sociologie”, serie nouă, anul XXVIII, nr.
