Strategies of 'Aesopian Language' in Romanian Literary Criticism Under
SLOVO , VOL. 24, NO . 2 (A UTUMN 2012), 75-95. The Rhetoric of Subversion: Strategies of ‘Aesopian Language’ in Romanian Literary Criticism under Late Communism ANDREI TERIAN Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania This paper analyses the subversive strategies of ‘Aesopian language’ with reference to the discourse of the Romanian literary criticism written under late communism (1971-1989). The first two sections of the paper signal certain gaps and inconstancies in defining Aesopian language and in delineating its forms of manifestation; at the same time, they explain the spread of this subversive practice in the political and cultural context of Romanian communism. The following three sections analyse the manner in which Aesopian language materialized in the writings of some of the most important contemporary Romanian critics: Mircea Iorgulescu, Nicolae Manolescu and Mircea Martin. The final section of the study considers a revision of the current definitions of Aesopian language (through the concept of “triggers” theorized in this paper), a new classification of the rhetorical strategies acting globally in a subversive text, as well as a re-evaluation of the relevance of Aesopian language in the context of ‘resistance through culture’, which was the main form of opposition against the communist regime in Romania. INTRODUCTION In the Foreword to his famous pamphlet Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1917), V.I. Lenin cautioned his readers that the paper had been written ‘with an eye to the tsarist censorship’; therefore, he had found it essential to render his subversive doctrine ‘with extreme caution, by hints, in an allegorical language – in that accursed Aesopian language – to which tsarism compelled all revolutionaries to have recourse whenever they took up the pen to write a “legal” work’. -
PRECURSOR AL AVANGARDEI Urmuz – a Forerunner of the Avantgarde
URMUZ Ŕ PRECURSOR AL AVANGARDEI Urmuz – A Forerunner of the Avantgarde Drd. Ioana-Mihaela VULTUR Universitatea „Petru Maior” din Târgu-Mureş Abstract: Conscious of the critical situation of the Romanian literature and its stagnation, Urmuz comes up with a strange way of perceiving the world around him and its manifestations. He chooses irony in order to fight the realist literature of his time and not only. By using this method, he brings forward the anti-literature. The Dada and the Surrealist movements identify Urmuz as their forerunner, due to his new technique of conceiving literature: weird hybrid characters, intertextuality (revived in postmodernism) unexpected juxtapositions and his new anti-social attitude. -
Henri H. Stahl's Contribution to the Sociological Monographs of the Bucharest School of Sociology
UTOPIA CONSTRUCTIVĂ A MONOGRAFIEI HENRI H. STAHL’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS OF THE BUCHAREST SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY ALINA JURAVLE* ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to shed light onto Henri H. Stahl’s contribution to the sociological monographs that were the core of the Bucharest School of Sociology’s activity. Stahl is presented as an active member of the School, bringing into it his own background and abilities, distinct or shared views, values and interests and then impacting it through his actions which, combined with other factors, distinctively change and shape its development. As such, the study is also not an attempt to summarize his theoretical developments and to compare and place them in rapport with those of other social scientists. The purpose of this study is to expose at least partially the degree to which the knowledge that Stahl generates and uses differs in shape and contents from that of Dimitrie Gusti, regarding the manner in which it is used in his course towards a certain role and status in the School, the manner in which his course in the School develops, and the manner in which his personal characteristics and options, group and organizational developments and the wider social context interact in order to shape published sociological knowledge. Keywords: Henri H. Stahl, sociological monographs, Bucharest School of Sociology, knowledge. THE SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPH – THEORY, METHOD, PRINTED SCIENTIFIC RESULT The following study is an attempt to shed light onto Henri H. The Identity of the Romanian Pre-Avant-Garde
Cuvinte cheie: Pre-avangardă, anti-tradiţionalism, manifest poetic, post-simbolism, program- articol, arhitext Abstract: In the evolution and dialectics of the literary phenomenon at the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century we can note a period of artistic fizzle, of confirming literary currents and movements, that vehemently deny the tradition and which, through some important elements, shall announce the historical avant-garde. We are referring to a series of artistic and literary currents, with a set of similar features, having a fetish for the shocking novelty and bracketing of the established and generally accepted values, without having the force of penetration, aggressiveness, coherence and spreading of the actual avant-garde: the fauvism, cubism, futurism, imagism, vorticism and others. Keywords: Pre-avantgarde, anti-traditionalism, poetic manifest, post-symbolist, programme- article, archi-text. -

Book Reviews REVISITING the AVANT-GARDES
SWEDISH JOURNAL OF ROMANIAN STUDIES Book reviews REVISITING THE AVANT-GARDES Marius MIHEȚ University of Oradea, Romania/ Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovak Republic e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The tome written by Paul Cernat, a known specialist of the avant-gardes, analyzes the anatomy and human blueprints set out by the Romanian and European avant-gardes found under the immediate influence of the symbolic year of 1933. The “amphibian” nature of these radicalisms is characteristic for an entire process of modernization. That is why Paul Cernat critically revisits all of the marquee and obscure cases, offering us a critical panoramic view that invites novel re- assessments. The studies are written using a blend of tools you might see a literary historian and a portraitist wield in their work, a blend that lets shine truly special expressive abilities, and qualities in terms of synthesis. Whether tackling famous names, household figures from around the world – such as Ionescu and Blecher – or discussing the work of more provincial or minor writers, the author withholds from us no memorable quote. An essential study for those interested in the phenomenon of the Romanian avant-garde. Key words: Romanian avant-garde; radicalism; re-reading; surrealism; absurd; The first chapter, Căderea în modernitate (Falling into Modernity), focuses on Eminescu’s destiny in the group Junimea [The Youth] as a form of nihilistic avant-garde. What we know for certain from reading this section is that Paul Cernat always exhibits more conceptual possibilities than the subjects he chooses. I would venture to say that his subject matter is always beneath his critical level. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes. -
