Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

UTOPIA CONSTRUCTIVĂ A MONOGRAFIEI HENRI H. STAHL’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS OF THE BUCHAREST SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY ALINA JURAVLE* ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to shed light onto Henri H. Stahl’s contribution to the sociological monographs that were the core of the Bucharest School of Sociology’s activity. Stahl is presented as an active member of the School, bringing into it his own background and abilities, distinct or shared views, values and interests and then impacting it through his actions which, combined with other factors, distinctively change and shape its development. As such, the study is also not an attempt to summarize his theoretical developments and to compare and place them in rapport with those of other social scientists. The purpose of this study is to expose at least partially the degree to which the knowledge that Stahl generates and uses differs in shape and contents from that of Dimitrie Gusti, regarding the manner in which it is used in his course towards a certain role and status in the School, the manner in which his course in the School develops, and the manner in which his personal characteristics and options, group and organizational developments and the wider social context interact in order to shape published sociological knowledge. Political Fiction Or Fiction About Politics. How to Operationalize a Fluid Genre in the Interwar Romanian Literature
ȘTEFAN FIRICĂ POLITICAL FICTION OR FICTION ABOUT POLITICS. HOW TO OPERATIONALIZE A FLUID GENRE IN THE INTERWAR ROMANIAN LITERATURE What’s in a Genre? A reader of contemporary genre theories is compelled to conclude that, one way or another, the idea of literary class has managed a narrow escape from obsolescence. Conceptual maximalism fell behind the pragmatic call to respond to a global cultural environment for which the task of grouping, structuring, organizing, labelling remains vital for a long list of reasons, of which marketing policies are not to be forgotten. The modern story of the field has seen many twists and turns. After some theories of genre evolutionism – derived more or less from Darwinism – consumed their heyday in the 1890s–1920s1, Bakhtin (1937) took a decisive step toward a “historical poetics”, before Wellek, Warren (1948), Northrop Frye (1957), and Käte Hamburger (1957), and, later on, Gérard Genette (1979), Alastair Fowler (1982), or Jean-Marie Schaeffer (1989) returned to self- styled mixtures of formalism and historicism2. The study which pushed forward the scholarship in the field was, surprisingly or not, a fierce deconstruction of the “madness of the genre”, perceived as a self- defeating theory and practice of classification, highly necessary and utterly impossible at the same time. LITERATUR(WISSENSCHAFT) IN DER ZERREISSPROBE Erwartet man in der Gesellschaft von einem Slawisten als Vertreter der Geisteswissenschaften, Neu- es über den slawistischen Bestsellerautor Dostojewski zu erfahren, eventuell Aufklärung darüber zu erhalten, wie 'unser' beliebtester talk-show-Autor Andrzej Szczypiorski aus Polen Naziverbrechen be- wertet oder ganz einfach Unterhaltung durch die Gedichte des emigrierten russischen Lyrikers Iosif Brodskij, hierzulande schon seit Jahren nur mehr "Joseph Brodsky" genannt, dann wären diese Er- wartungen völlig legitim. Denn: Information, Aufklärung und Orientierung sowie kurzweilige Unterhaltung sind die üblicherweise der Literatur, aber teils auch ihrer Kritik entgegengebrachten Erwartungen.- Oder vielleicht doch nur Hoffnungen? Doch muß - keineswegs nur die slawistische - Literaturwissenschaft die Gesellschaft immer wieder darin enttäuschen, ihr all dies zu bieten. Deshalb fordert man von ihr, sie solle - wie so manche unse- rer Disziplinen - endlich ihren lebensfernen "Elfenbeinturm" verlassen! Kriecht man doch als Geisteswissenschaftler über Jahrzehnte auf der Objektebene der Vorlesungen vor sich hin, da mag es nicht von Schaden sein, wenn man sich mal kurzzeitig auf die Metaebene ka- tapultiert. Aus dieser Vogelperspektive sieht ja doch alles so ganz anders aus: Da läßt sich nicht mehr übersehen, daß von den 52 800 Buchneuerscheinungen im Deutschland des Jahres 1994 gerade mal eine bis zwei etwa mit der bulgarischen Literatur zu tun haben. Durch die Entscheidung für die Metaebene wird alles kompliziert: "In welcher Sprache soll ich zu Ih- nen sprechen?" - so läßt Johannes Bobrowski den wichtigsten Dichter der sorbischen Moderne, Ja- kub Bart, fragen: Denn sein bäuerlich-sorbisches Volk verstand seine artifiziellen Gedichte nicht. In welcher Sprache soll man sprechen? In der Literatur? In der Literatur w i s s enschaft? Natürlich in einer verständlichen - wird man zu Recht entgegnen. -

MOSES GASTER ȘI LAZĂR ȘĂINEANU: PROBLEMA DUBLEI IDENTITĂȚI Maria PAȘCALĂU Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara [email protected] Moses Gaster and Lazăr Șăineanu: The Question of Double Identity In the 1880s, as a result of the acculturation process, a generation of elite Jewish intellectuals became active, who promoted the idea of Romanian Jewish identity and came to make significant contributions to Romanian science and culture. The present paper aims to study the question of double identity concerning the generation of Romania’s acculturated Jewish intellectuals in the late 19th century, by analyzing two representative cases: Moses Gaster, a moderate assimilationist with Jewish nationalist tendencies, and Lazăr Șăineanu, who came to adopt a radical form of assimilation by converting to Christianity. This research will be undertaken from an interdisciplinary approach that includes cultural, historical, and political perspectives. The question of double identity regarding the two Jewish intellectuals will be related to aspects of their biographical trajectory, with a focus on their personal and professional backgrounds, on the relationship with the Jewish community and religious life, on cultural and scientific concerns, as well as on integration issues. By following the personal and cultural destinies of the two Jewish intellectuals, this paper aims to emphasize the impact of their work on both Romanian and Jewish cultures and to reveal the main difficulties that the whole generation they represented had to face by assuming the Romanian Jewish identity: increase in anti-Semitism, hostile reactions coming from the cultural and political authorities, rejection of integration, the pressure of the Romanian culture with ethnic-national identity tendencies on their Jewish identity. -

I first articulated the term “quiet realism” while reading James Joyce’s Dubliners during a tutorial with Professor Patrick O’Keeffe in the spring of my junior year in the Honors Tutorial College. It was how I came to describe the type of story whose ending feels subtle and unexpected, in that there is no obvious external resolution—no distinct feeling of an action closing the narrative; instead, a central character experiences a quiet, poignant, internal emotional resonance, like smacking a pair of tweezers against your palm and holding them up to your ear to hear small, metallic hum in the brief two seconds before it vanishes. One concept of the traditional story is a narrative in which a change occurs, whether that change be in physical, emotional, or spiritual circumstances, or some mixture of the three, in one or more persons involved. -

The Esperanto movement emerged in the global arena in the late nineteenth century as a response to inequalities in the nation-state field. In the course of several decades, the movement established a new global field based on the logic of equal communication through Esperanto and on the accumulation of cultural capital. While the field gained autonomy from the nation-state field, it has not been recognized as its equal. Persons endowed with cultural capital but lacking political and economic capital have been particularly drawn to Esperanto. Ironically, while attempting to overcome established unfair distinctions based on differential accumulation of political and economic capital, the Esperanto movement creates and maintains new distinctions and inequalities based on cultural capital accumulation. Ana Velitchkova At the regional level, the Esperanto movement became prominent in state- socialist Eastern Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. The movement found unexpected allies among independent states in the Eastern European periphery. -

Later Germans occupied it during the Second World War (1939-1945). It was liberated in 1945 by Soviet and American forces. In 1946 Communist party won the elections and occupied Czechoslovakia until the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Czech was peacefully dissolved and became the independent states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993. Modern Czech literature is divided into numerous periods like 19th century, the avant-garde of interwar period, the years under Communism and the Prague Spring, and the literature of the post- Communist Czech Republic. Milan Kundera (1929 - ) comes under the year of Communism and Prague Spring. In his two novels The Book of Laughter and Forgetting and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, he described the gloomy life of Czechs, who were under the control of Communists from 1948-1989. 1 Post-Authenticity: Literary Dialect and Realism in Victorian and Neo-Victorian Social Novels By: Suzanne Pickles A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities School of English July 2018 2 Abstract This thesis considers what a post-authenticity approach to literary dialect studies should be. Once we have departed from the idea of literary dialect studies being engaged in ascertaining whether or not the fictional representation of nonstandard speech varieties can be matched with those same varieties in the external world, how should we study the dialect we find in novels? I argue that literary dialect studies should be placed within critical work on the realist novel, since the representation of speech, like the broader field of realism, aims to reflect an external world, one with which the reader can identify. This, as yet, has not been done. My approach is to place greater emphasis on the role of the reader. I consider the ways in which writers use literary dialect to manage readers’ responses to characters, and the nature of those responses. I give a close reading of Victorian and neo-Victorian novels to show that, whilst the subject matter of these works has changed over time to suit a modern readership, the dialect representation – its form and the attitudes to language usage it communicates – is conservative. Referring to recent surveys, and through my own research with real readers, I show that nonstandard speakers are still regarded as less well-educated and of a lower social class than those who speak Standard English.
