30 nominations for MEDIA-funded films at the 30th European Film Awards edition
The 2017 European Film Awards will celebrate this Saturday in Berlin the greatest achievements in European cinema. Among the 27 feature films that received a nomination, 16 films have been supported through Creative Europe MEDIA programme of the EU.
Ruben Östlund’s Palme d'Or winning The Square tops the nominations of the European Film Awards (EFA) with five nominations for: Best Film, European Director, European Comedy, European Actor and European Screenwriter. Ildikó Enyedi’s Berlin Golden Bear winning On Body and Soul follows closely with four nominations for: Best film, European Director, European Actress and European Screenwriter.
Overall, the EU has invested €6.5 million through the Creative Europe MEDIA programme to support the development and distribution of these 16 films.
The nominations received by the MEDIA-supported features include:
Best Film
BPM (Beats per Minute) / 120 Battements par Minute (France) directed by Robin Campillo, received MEDIA support for distribution. On Body and Soul / Testről és Lélekről (Hungary) directed by Ildikó Enyedi was supported for its development and its distribution. The Other Side of Hope / Toivon Tuolla Puolen (Finland, Germany) directed & by Aki Kaurismäki was granted support for distribution. The Square (Sweden, Germany, France, Denmark) directed by Ruben Östlund received distribution support.
European Director
Ildikó Enyedi for On Body and Soul / Testről és Lélekről Aki Kaurismäki for The Other Side of Hope / Toivon Tuolla Puolen Yorgos Lanthimos for The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Ireland, UK, Greece). The film was supported by MEDIA funding at the earliest stages of its development (e.g. script writing) and at the distribution stage. Ruben Östlund for The Square
European Actress 2017
Paula Beer in Frantz (France, Germany) directed by François Ozon. The support received from MEDIA programme, via the distribution scheme, helped the film to be seen in 25 countries. Juliette Binoche in Bright Sunshine In / Un beau soleil intérieur (France) directed by Claire Denis. The film was supported at the distribution stage. Alexandra Borbély in On Body and Soul / Testről és Lélekről Isabelle Huppert in Happy End ( France, Germany, Austria) directed by Michael Haneke. Happy End was distributed in 13 countries via the MEDIA programme support. Florence Pugh in Lady Macbeth (UK) directed by William Oldroyd. This film was supported at the distribution stage.
European Actor

Louise by the Shore / Louise en Hiver (France, Canada), directed by Jean-François Laguionie, was supported at the development and distribution stages. Loving Vincent (Poland, UK), directed by Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman, was supported at the development and distribution stage. European Comedy
King of the Belgians (Belgium, Netherlands, Bulgaria), directed by Jessica Woodworth & Peter Brosens, received MEDIA support at the development and distribution stages. The Square Vincent and the End of The World / Vincent (Belgium, France), directed by Christophe van Rompaey, received MEDIA support at the development and distribution stages. Welcome to Germany / Willkommen Bei Den Hartmanns (Germany), directed by Simon Verhoeven, was supported at the distribution stage.
European Discovery 2017 – Prix FIPRESCI
Lady Macbeth Summer 1993 / Estiu 1993 (Spain), directed by Carla Simón, received MEDIA support via the development and distributions schemes.

3,000 EFA members will vote for the winners ahead of the awards ceremony on 9 December. The public also had the opportunity to cast their vote online for their favorite film competing for People’s Choice Award. The winners will be announced on Saturday, 9th of December and the event will be streamed live on the EFA's website from 19.00 CET.

The European Film Academy was founded in 1988 as closing highlight of Berlin's European Cultural Capital year and as part of the first European Year of Film and Television. Since its launch in 1991, the MEDIA programme, has supported the continuous transformation of the audiovisual industry and promoted creative collaboration across borders. It has invested €2.5 billion in European content, creativity and cultural diversity, helped in the development of thousands of films, their international distribution and promotion. It has forged links between professionals and provided high quality training for thousands of producers, directors and screenwriters.
Each year, MEDIA supports around 2,000 European projects in film, television, including series and other audio-visual works, which are distributed digitally in cinema, on television and through video on demand.
