TD2818 Glasgow Film Festival A4 ad v1a.indd 1 20/12/2018 17:59 WELCOME TO GLASGOW FILM FESTIVAL 2019 Is there any other film festival in the world where the regulars at The Clansman pub rub shoulders with the residents of 23 Commerce Quay, Brussels? We pride ourselves on programming without prejudice at Glasgow. Every one of us loves movies and the thrill of anticipation for the UK premiere of sensitive period drama Tell It to the Bees is just as keenly felt as the excitement of uncovering the deep, dark secrets in The Hole in the Ground. The movies are one of the few things that bring us all together. When the world around us may seem hell-bent on division, inequality and conflict. Movies unite people. They move us, inspire us and show us how to survive the best of times and the worst of times. Sharing laughter or tears is proof that we have so much more in common than any of the forces that try to tear us apart. Our Opening and Closing Galas this year are all about the growing pains that are CONTENTS familiar to us all. We proudly open with the UK premiere of actor Jonah Hill’s Ticketing 2 stunning, big-hearted directorial debut Mid90s, following a 13-year-old boy trying Opening & Closing Galas 4-5 to figure out who he is and where he belongs in the world. Some of the answers are found in a group of neighbourhood skateboarders. Our Closing Gala is the UK Enhance Your Festival Experience 6 premiere of Brian Welsh’s Beats, a tale of friendship and rebellion celebrated in 1969: The End of Innocence 7 the dancefloor sweat and throbbing beats of an illicit, old school through-the-night Belgian Cinema: Both Sides Now 7 rave. Both films are completely specific and entirely universal in their emotional pull. They make us reflect on the friendships we make, the logical families we create and Special Events 8 the relationships that sustain us. Gala 8 CineMasters 9 Between these two sturdy pillars we have strung a festival of the brightest Local Heroes 9 lights, conveying the whole wide world that cinema has to offer: from the thrill of discovery to the comfort of renewing old acquaintances. There truly is something Sound & Vision 9 here for everyone. Even better, the daily retrospective of classic Hollywood movies Modern Families 9 from the landmark year of 1969 is absolutely free. Stranger Than Fiction 9 We look forward to seeing you at Glasgow Film Festival. So, come on. Future Cult 10 Let’s Get Together.
