Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Alexander Lindgren, 36761 Pro gradu-avhandling i engelska språket och litteraturen Handledare: Jason Finch Fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi Åbo Akademi 2020 ÅBO AKADEMI – FACULTY OF ARTS, PSYCHOLOGY AND THEOLOGY Abstract for Master’s Thesis Subject: English Language and Literature Author: Alexander Lindgren Title: Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Supervisor: Jason Finch Abstract: Walt Disney Animation Studios is currently one of the world’s largest producers of animated content aimed at children. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes. -

19 CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This chapter presents how the researcher collected and analyzed the data. Research method consists of research design, data source, instrument of the research, data collection, and technique of data analysis. A. Research Design This research use a descriptive qualitative method to identify and analyze translation techniques in translating Judy‘s Utterances in Zootopia movie. According to Arikunto (1993: 208), there is no hypothesis in descriptive research as it only describes a phenomenon without any hypothesis. This research was carried out by formulating the problem, collecting data, classifying data, analyzing data, and drawing the conclusion and some suggestion. B. Data Source The data of this research were taken from The Subtitle Text of Zootopia movie. Zootopia is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated buddy cop comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 55th Disney animated feature film. It was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, co-directed by Jared Bush, and Stars the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Tommy Chong, J. K. Simmons, 19 20 Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and Shakira. It details the unlikely partnership between a rabbit police officer and a red fox con artist, as they uncover a conspiracy involving the disappearance of savage predator inhabitants of a mammalian metropolis. The data in this research are all of the sentences spoken by Judy, the rabbit cop in this movie. The source text in English, and the target text in Bahasa Indonesia. -

10 Creative Ways to Explore a Bible Passage by Jeremy Steele (www.umcom.org)(Note: This is a helpful and interesting article. Since space is limited, this will be a two or three part article, spread out in two or three newsletters.) #1 #14 Last month (February 2017 Methodist Dimension), we covered 1) Decode the Story and 2) Decipher the Argument, as ways to explore the Bible. Here are additional suggestions of out-of-the-box ways to explore, study and better communicate the Bible’s message. Good to the last drop 3. Design a comic strip: This method can be great when used with the first two ideas. Break the passage into eight or fewer discrete scenes and draw the key action of each scene paired with dialogue or important narration. This is all about exploring the passage by imagining what else is happening in the surroundings. What are the reactions of the other people? Do any props come into play? How are they held/used? How does the setting shape the scene? Don’t be afraid to use stick figures! 4. Create a meme: The current trend of placing a catchy word or phrase on top of an image is not only fun, but can also help you explore the Bible.
