fter successfully advocating for teachers’ prioritisation for CO- AVID-19 vaccination, unions are shifting their campaign to having stu- dents vaccinated ahead of the routine order of age groups prepared by the Task Force, The Botswana Gazette has estab- lished. The Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) and the Botswana Sectors of Educators Union (BOSETU) say there is a need to also vaccinate students in order to lessen the risk of COVID-19 transmission with- in learning institutions and are likely to act in unison in this regard. The vice president of BOSETU, Mo- gomotsi Motshegwa, says although ad- vocating for students is out of their ju- risdiction, it is important to vaccinate students if transmission in schools is to be curbed and disruption of learning pre- vented. “Our priority was for our members to get vaccinated because we were look- ing at the way they were succumbing to COVID-19 complications,” Motshegwa said in an interview. “However, it is also important to vac- cinate students because their learning has been disrupted by going into isola- tion after testing positive for COVID-19 or being identified in contact tracing.” “Our priority was for our members to get vaccinated because we were looking at the way they were succumbing to COVID-19 complications.” Similarly, BTU president Gotlamang Oitsile says the unions intend to ap- proach the government about vaccina- tion of students. Oitsile added that BTU once raised it with the government but the issue was not considered. “It is clear that learning is disrupted when students Motor Centre Toyota:- Tel: +267 395 1736, Fax: +267 397 3442, Plot 28562, Samora Machel Drive test positive for COVID-19,” he said. Reached for comment, the Minister of Basic Education (MoBE), Fidelis Mo- lao, was non-committal on the issue. “The vaccination plan, as pronounced by the COVID-19 Task Force and Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), clearly stipulates who are to receive vaccines and their age categories,” Molao stated. Most of what is being put out is at most unau- thenticated and lacks editorial scrutiny. That they violate basic ethics and the core tenets of journalism is an understatement. But use of social-media in Botswana has doubled over the years. According to the latest Afrobarometer survey, more than a third of Batswana (34%) now use Facebook, Twitter, What- sApp, or other social media every day as sources of news. The study investigated use of social media in Botswana between 2014 and now. The survey shows that daily use of social media for news is significantly higher among citizens with post-secondary educa- tion, the youngest respondents (53% of those aged 18-26), and urban residents (50%). It also found that most of the people who use social media daily as source of news are men. Today, social media reigns supreme in information dissemi- nation. Some religious leaders were among people who made some of the most outra- geous statements about the pandemic. One of the claims that they made, which drew laughter and concern in equal measure from members of the public, was that anointing oil could insulate their followers from the pandemic. This claim has been discredited by medical experts who insist that anointing oil is not medicinal and even accuse the clerics of using it to mislead their flocks. Nevertheless, some religionists are still glued to their beliefs. he inaugural virtual Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) Awards, originally scheduled for 31 July 2021, are now slated for September 2021, the Minister of TYouth, Sports and Culture (MYSC), Tumiso Rakgare, told Parliament recently. Minister Rakgare disclosed that the government has pledged P500 000 for this year’s annual awards that will honour and celebrate Botswana musicians and creatives who re- corded and commercialized new music between 1 January 2019 and April 2021. “The majority of funds will go towards prizes for artists,” he said. “The ministry con- siders BOMU as a key stakeholder in engaging artists on all matters pertaining to the music industry. This is one of the ministry’s interventions to support the sector and avoid its total collapse.” According to the minister, beginning in March 2022 and culminating on Botswana Na- tional Day on 30 September, creatives can also look forward to celebrating their country with the world. Several Botswana artists are expected to participate in a six-month long exposition on a rotational basis. Besides performing at events hosted by Botswana, local artists will have other oppor- tunities by organizers of the expo to perform alongside international artists for exposure and networking opportunities. An estimated 114 local artists will perform at the six-month long expo. Botswana creatives will also get to participate in the upcoming World Expo 2020 Dubai, which was postponed last year due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister Rakgare said the Dubai exposition will run for six months from the 1st October 2021 to 31st March 2022, hosting 190 countries with an estimated 25 million visitors. This will create an international market for locally produced goods and services and simultaneously showcase Botswana’s artistic talent. “Marketing and sale of arts and crafts will be a major part of the World Expo 2020,” Rakgare said. “The ministry has since collected arts and crafts from producers across the country, including basketry, leatherwork, beadwork, pottery, wire sculptures, woodcarvings and fashion design garments. The arts and crafts have been collected from 220 artists with a total value of P988 567. These will be sold at the exposition to generate income for the crafts producers.” BOSJE announces “Her,” Botswana’s first-ever Women’s Month Concert The organizers says it’s about celebrating though jazz the nize and celebrate women in Botswana a special performance by the BOSJE band. and to showcase inspiring contributions The “Her” livestream concert will air amazing ad crucial role that women play in society of female artists in the music industry in exclusively on the Facebook platform, em- Botswana. powering Botswana female artists to make “As BOSJE, we are thrilled to host this their mark in exciting new disruptive ways amazing event to recognize women and with a thrilling virtual experience. the crucial role that they play in our so- Mogami concluded: “With all that is ciety and industry as a whole,” said the happening in the world right now, it is Founding Director f BOSJE, Akhutleleng important to take a pause from the chaos Mogami. and uplift people’s spirits with our tal- “Through this initiative, we hope to tell ents. I wish I could comment on circumstances that brought Ihsanullah Azim here, but since I am not certain, I will spare you the speculation. But here he was, Colonel Ihsa- nullah Azim of the Afghan National Army. A man whose skills and knowledge in the art of war had not only been honed and refined by the notoriously impenetrable terrain of Afghanistan but also qualified by prestigious military schools of the West. He was a graduate of the US Army War College, a rep- utable military institution with alumni like General Colin Powell and General Norman Schwarzkopf. In addition, he was a beneficiary of defragmentation of various tribal Afghan militia into the Afghan National Army. He was probably from the Northern Alliance (a US-funded loose coalition of tribal militias from northern Afghanistan made up mainly of Tajiks and Uzbeks). But due to inher- ent sensitivities in such discussions, it would have been utterly stupid to seek clarity on such aspects. To page 23 The Botswana Gazette Wednesday 25 August 2021 feature Page 23

The same Afghanistan that defeated Genghis Khan in the 13th Century came to haunt the British in the 19th Century, Russians in the 20th Century and now the Americans in the 21st Century. The inhospita- ble terrain, the unforgiving and unpredictable weather, fractured tribal politics, turbulent relations with local populations and battle-hardened armed militias. For Colonel Azim, there would be nothing surprising if the US and its allies were to abandon their adventure in Afghanistan; they would only be the latest in a long series of nations to do so. The British 1839 invasion of Afghanistan was not so much a defeat as it was a complete humiliation: a military disaster of unprecedented proportions, perhaps matched only by the Fall of Singapore exactly 100 years later. Fear- ful of increased Russian interest in the area, the British decided to in- vade Afghanistan and marched unchallenged into Kabul in early 1839 with a force of between 16,000 to 20,000 British and Indian troops collectively known as Indus. A mere three years later, there was only one known British survivor, Assistant Surgeon William Brydon who limped into the safety of Jalalabad on a wounded horse. Asked what had happened to the army, Brydon is reported to have answered, “I am the army.” Many had perished from cold, hunger, exposure and exhaustion through the perilous Afghan mountains in horrendous winter condi- tions. But despite all that unkind history, the Soviet Union marched into Afghanistan in 1979. Ten years later, they left tattered, torn and staring at the collapse of the Soviet empire. My first interaction with Afghanistan came in the form of a call from a friend. He was worried by the momentum of events post-September Awaken Your Inner Artist: 11 and inevitability of war in the Middle East. I gave him my layman’s opinion. A few days later, he called to say his employer had appreciat- ed my opinion and wished I could expand it. It was nothing more than a strategic warning brief premised on a line in Ponatshego Mokane’s Yoga And Creativity poem, “Ntwa ga e lowe ka bokima.” Although we Batswana may not find value in the statement, it is actually the essence of the asymmetric doctrine of war. otswana’s sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo recorded a historic double as he bagged a gold medal in the 100m category and a Bsilver medal in the 200m category at the Under 20 World Cham- pionships in Nairobi, Kenya. In the process he became the first ever Motswana to record a podium finish in the short sprint category ina global competition. Tebogo won the final on Friday with an impressive time as he clocked 10.19. At the time, this was Botswana ‘s second ever gold medal in the competition after Nijel Amos’s win in 2012. In the next few days Tebogo and Amos were joined by Anthony Pesela who won gold in the 400m category and the Botswana 4x400m relay team who also bagged gold. Tebogo’s stride, posture and running power mirrored that of many global sprint stars. many of whom are versatile double acts in the 100 m and 200m categories. The 18 year old star proved that he is also a double act as he bagged a silver medal in the 200m final. In what turned out to be a battle of final lap sprint bursts between Tebogo and his Nigerian counterpart Udodi Onwuzurike, the latter emerged victorious as Tebogo could only settle for a silver medal. The race could be viewed as a preview of what could be a match up for the next decade in short sprints at African and global level with Botswa- na finally having a say in short sprint conversations. Tebogo recorded a time of 20.38. Tebogo narrowly missed out on a 23 year old record at the championship which was set by British athlete Christian Malcom who won a gold medal in the 100m and 200m categories in 1998.

Cooper Eyeing Second othusi Cooper will have an opportunity to grab his second trophy in Zambian foot- Mball when his club Lusaka Dynamos takes on MTN Zambian Super League champions ZESCO Dynamos Trophy This Weekend United in the Charity Shield this weekend. The game will take place on Saturday at the Woodlands Stadium at 3pm. Similar to season opening curtain raisers around the world, the Zambian Charity Shield pits the league champions (ZESCO) against the ABSA Cup winners (Lusaka Dynamos). Having already won his first piece of silver- ware last season the Zebras midfielder will be hoping for a win that would see him lift his second trophy in the space of eight months. The former Township Rollers midfielder’s ar- rival at the club has coincided with the arrival of their first trophy in 13 years. Although their league form was disappoint- ing the club hailed last season as a reasonable success and Cooper became an instant fan fa- vourite in the process. Cooper missed the CO- SAFA Cup tournament after testing positive for COVID-19 and Dynamos will be upbeat about the amount of rest he got during the off- season. Cooper’s club has been busy in pre-season training and they recently won 5-3 against Atletico Lusaka in a friendly game. ZESCO United are likely to be a lot more prepared having started their pre-season a lot earlier. On August 7, ZESCO United beat Chipata 2-1 in a friendly, this past weekend they drew 3-3 against Jumulo FC. Decend Start For Ngele At Chippa

BONGANI MALUNGA

ogakolodi Ngele has made a decent start to life at Chippa United. He was handed a full debut by Gavin Hunt as his new club made a winning start to the 2021/2022 DSTV Premiership sea- Mson against new comers Sekhukhune United during the week- end. Chippa United won the game 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Vuluyeke Zulu with Ngele making an impressive contribution as he was a goal threat every time he touched the ball. Ngele provided his fellow attackers with telling passes but they could not convert their chances to double the lead. The Zebras star also proved to be a menace from set piece range as his free kicks gave Sekhukhune goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini something to think about. Ngele created his first big chance in the 22nd minute with a curling free kick which found a team- mate but his header surprisingly went wide with only the goal- keeper to beat after evading other markers in an aerial duel. One particular free kick which stood out was in the last few minutes of the game whereby Ngele’s seemingly goal bound effort went a few millimetres past the goal frame. The next task for Ngele and his teammates was a home game against reigning DSTV Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday (yesterday) which they recorded a 0-0 draw. Ngele was in the starting line up and he was substituted in the second half after an industrious performance. The Botswana Gazette Wednesday 25 August 2021 Page 29 sports
