The deployment of the mercenaries also showed the government wasn’t confident in the capabilities of its own security forces. Intervention in a quagmire The SADC is now being asked to intervene in a conflict that it has neither resources nor the political will to manage. When the body bags begin to come home, there will be tremendous pressure on SADC forces to withdraw. Rather than the folly of an intervention, the region should be encouraging the Mozambi- can state to address the grievances of the com- munities in Cabo Delgado. Throughout Africa, military approaches to grievances over resources have often ended in disaster. For many years, the discovery of oil in South Sudan encouraged the government in Khartoum to militarise a conflict that was, at heart, about self-determination and dignity for Southerners. South Sudan did attain inde- pendence in 2011, but after tremendous loss of lives. Similarly, a low-level insurgency in Ango- la’s Cabinda oil-rich region has persisted be- cause of Luanda’s indifference to the plight of the local population. Since the early 2000s, Nigerian govern- ments have learnt to use political approaches in meeting the demands of the Niger Delta oil-producing communities. In a conflict that has festered for decades, the minorities in the region have contested the exploitation of oil resources by multinational companies, in col- laboration with the federal government, to the detriment of their livelihoods and welfare. FUB head of women football who is also the women’s sen- Fior national team captain Bonang Otlhagile said the current campaign is aimed at laying a foundation for future generations. “Some of us are about to retire but before we do, we would like to address issues that have been affecting the growth of the game. Women’s football cannot follow in the footsteps of the men’s game nor be positioned as its little sister,” she said. Otlhagile called on different football stakeholders from the media, supporters, sponsors and clubs to learn from the challenges and opportunities we have seen develop across the football industry and use this knowledge to help lay the foundation for a sustainable global employment market built on healthy and safe working environments. For his part, FUB secretary general, Kgosana Masaseng said as the country awaits the return of football, their wish is to see women football overcome traditional barriers to elevate the voices of players. “We call on the leadership to identify solutions to measure the value of women’s football and develop a long-term roadmap for success. Drive growth and opportunity through innovation and long-term investments,” Ma- saseng said.
