Pugh-Sellers 1 Seeing Humans, Making Commodities: Slave Ship
Pugh-Sellers 1 Seeing Humans, Making Commodities: Slave Ship Rebellions on Film Senior Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Undergraduate Program in African and African-American Studies and History Chad Williams, Adviser In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts By Lucia Pugh-Sellers April 2020 Committee members: Name: Chad Williams Signature:___________________________________ Name: Alice Kelikian Signature:___________________________________ Name: Faith Smith Signature:___________________________________ Pugh-Sellers 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my committee members, who have inspired and helped me enormously during my time at Brandeis. I am grateful to know Professors Faith Smith and Alice Kelikian, who each influenced me so much, and ultimately changed my life. Professor Chad Williams, my thesis advisor, was a model of patience, offering step-by-step guidance and sage advice. His dedication to teaching was evident from the first day I stepped into his class, when he showed himself willing to engage with an intimidated first-year student. I could not have finished this thesis without these profoundly important academic mentors. I also want to thank everyone else who helped me through this thesis process, particularly: Kavita, for being my thesis-writing buddy and commiserator; Yael, for her empathy; Allison, for advice and laughter; Tamar; my thesis cohort (Dannie, Victoria, and Jake). Finally, I would like to acknowledge my family, especially my parents and sisters, for their wholehearted support, which keeps me going. I recognize and wrestle with my positionality as white woman, and one who has largely benefited from the systems of racism I describe here. -

Celebrated for its convening power and its 'flagship' publications, AFLA provides leadership and support to key institutions and organisations working for the respect and recognition of human rights and international justice. AFLA operates throughout Africa, with a pan-African registered office and platform in South Africa and a small satellite office in the international legal capital of The Hague. AFLA has been at the forefront of universalising international criminal justice and has engaged with stakeholders in Africa and the Global North in this endeavour. AFLA has a bias for gender equality and gender justice in all its activities, not least because women play a leadership role in the organisation. AFLA has worked to increase accessibility of the ICC to national actors. It has spearheaded efforts to incorporate much needed African perspectives in the global campaign to promote accountability and end impunity for gross human rights violations. -
Chapter I Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents the introduction of the research. It describes background of the study, previous study, limitation of the study, problem statement, objective of the study, benefit of the study, research method and research paper organization. A. Background of the Study Racism is the doctrine which emphasizes the importance of main characteristic of race which is used as a standard to make interaction between individual or groups (Soekanto, 1985:411). This is the popular problem on the country. There are many kinds of races such as in America. Usually racism is used to differentiate between white and black skins. The white skins are regarded as superior for all races so the black skins get injustice treatment. The black skins do not have the right to any form of opportunities enjoyed by the white skins. Black skins are seen as the pests that try to pollute the purity and superiority of the white skins. It makes black skins live uncomfortable in America. They want to fight against but they are afraid missing out their jobs. One of movie that gives imagery of social lives is The Help . It is one of the most popular racial movies in America. The Help is an American drama film directed by Tate Taylor. The Help movie is released on August 10 th , 2011 on blu-ray disc, DVD, and digital. It represented Jackson in 1960s. The movie is produced by DreamWorks Studios, distributed by Touchstone Pictures, edited by Hughes Winbome, music by Thomas Newman, and cinematography 1 2 by Stephen Goldblatt. The movie is adapted of Kathryn Stockett’s novel (2009) with the same name. -

The important conference will continue as scheduled at Botho University in Gaborone, Botswana. In a statement, the Dalai Lama said, “I was very much looking forward to coming to Africa again and visiting your country. I was especially interested in taking part in discussions of Ubuntu, which I feel reflects my fundamental belief that we are all interdependent and need to conduct ourselves with a sense of universal responsibility. Despite my absence, I am urging the conference organizers to continue with their plans, to hold valuable discussion and publish the results.” WELCOME It is with sincere gratitude to the people of Botswana that I welcome you to the Mind & Life Dialogue, “Botho/Ubuntu: A Dialogue on Spirituality, Science and Humanity with the Dalai Lama.” This historic event was carried forth from the imagination of visionary and determined individuals here in Africa, across oceans and continents to the monks of India, and passed along through the hardworking hands of event planners, government officials and scores of volunteers to this very moment. And now we are together — poised with shared optimism and ready to discover new ideas through expert teachings on Botho/ Ubuntu, healing from the legacy of wars and colonialism, and advancing social justice and women’s equality. -
