A United Kingdom – Review Amma Asante's third film is a tastefully made true-life story, based around a forgotten romance that caused familial, national and international strife . A United Kingdom tells the inspiring true story of Seretse Khama, the King of Bechuanaland (modern day Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. Seretse and Ruth defied family, Apartheid and empire and their love triumphed over every obstacle flung in their path . In doing so they transformed their nation and inspired the world. Through illness , exile and unrelenting pressure, the couple’s commitment to each other is the only constant. Their relationship glides romantically along on the surface while political turmoil boils away underneath . Its plea for tolerance isn’t subtle , but it’s a story that deserves to be told. Even Winston Churchill plays a significant (albeit off-camera) role in determining the couple’s fate . Building on the public’s interest in the star-crossed lovers, Churchill campaigns with a promise to allow them to return to Bechuanaland. This politically charged love story is beautifully told even as the timeline of events is rearranged and compressed for a two-hour film. It´s a welcome reminder that, even in the direst of situations and in the most impossible of times, love can ind eed trump hate. .

NEW BFI RESEARCH REVEALS REPRESENTATION OF BLACK ACTORS IN UK FILM OVER LAST 10 YEARS 13% of UK films have a black actor in a leading role; 59% have no black actors in any role Noel Clarke is most prolific black actor in UK film, followed by Ashley Walters, Naomie Harris and Thandie Newton Decade sees little change in the number of roles for black actors; only 4 black actors feature in the list of the 100 most prolific actors 50% of all lead roles played by black actors are clustered in 47 films, potentially limiting opportunities for audiences to see diverse representation; these 47 films represent LESS than 5% of the total number of films Horror, drama and comedy films LEAST likely to cast black actors Crime, sci-fi and fantasy films MOST likely to cast black actors LONDON – Thursday 6 October, 2016: The BFI today announced ground-breaking new research that explores the representation of black actors in UK films over the last 10 years (January 2006 - August 2016) and reveals that out of the 1,172 UK films made and released in that period, 59% (691 films) did not feature any black actors in either lead or named roles1. The proportion of UK films2,3 which credited at least one black actor4 in a lead role was 13%, or 157 films in total. The new research provides an early indicator of what is set to be the most comprehensive set of data about UK films from 1911 to the present day – the BFI Filmography, launching in 2017.

Mixed-Race Marriage and the Meaning of Rights in the Post-War British Commonwealth Jon Piccini and Duncan Money Pre-print version of our article that was published in Comparative Studies in Society and History, 63, 3 (2021), pp. 655 – 684 https://doi.org/10.1017/S0010417521000177 Introduction In February 1950, the would-be chief of the Bangwato in Bechuanaland (modern-day Botswana), Sereste Khama, was removed from the colony by the British Government and banished for five years. This was soon extended to his wife Ruth Williams, a clerk from London, and their new-born daughter. A few weeks earlier, on the other side of the world, in another corner of Britain’s empire, the fate of several dozen other “mixed-race” relationships was being decided by the Australian High Court. The nation’s highest judicial body found in December 1949 that some thirty-eight Chinese refugees, granted waivers to the nation’s stringent immigration laws at the height of World War II, had no right to remain in the nation, despite many having married and had families with white Australian women. These cases of families being ripped asunder by the prerogatives of white supremacy, and the vociferous opposition such moves engendered from diverse sections of the Australian and British communities, speak to the tensions examined in this article. Marriage had long been policed by imperial authorities, and those that crossed the “color line” particularly so.1 But, the 1940s saw rhetoric of a “family of nations” reach fever pitch, as a transforming British Empire and a freshly minted United Nations sought to deploy ideas of familiarity and marital 1 bonds to strengthen emerging global systems.
