Abstract Fernando Schaffenburg, a Mexican dancer, was a member of the Russe de Monte Carlo. His collection contains photographs, correspondence, newspaper articles, performance programs, souvenir programs, advertisements and a costume.

Identification FS-016

Biographical Note Fernando Schaffenburg was born April 2, 1925 in Mexico City. He trained in ballet at the Mexican School of Dance and later danced with the Ballet of the City of Mexico. In the late 1940's, he moved to City to join American Ballet Theater, going on two American and one European tour with the troupe. In the early 1950's, he appeared in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Paint Your Wagon, and Arabian Nights. He performed with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo from 1952 to 1955. After being the lead dancer in the Broadway hit My Fair Lady, Mr. Schaffenburg moved to Texas to teach ballet in El Paso. He later moved to Dallas to teach at Edith James' School of Ballet. In 1964, he became the head of the ballet division of Texas Christian University's theater arts department. He was chairman upon his retirement in 1988. He was also the early director of the Fort Worth Ballet Association. He died in Pueblo, Colorado on March 6, 2009.
