Publishers’ Series

This file provides a list of scientific titles in the principal series mentioned in chapter 7 of Science for All, arranged chronologically by start date for the series, then alphabetically by authors’ names. Start dates are sometimes rather ambiguous, since publishers would occasionally incorporate existing books into a series. Dates of first publication and of subsequent revisions or reprintings are given where known. For books not listed in the printed bibliography, these are derived from the British Library catalog. The lists were originally compiled from advertisements and similar sources, and only those titles listed in the bibliography have been consulted directly. An effort has been made to eliminate titles which appear in lists but were never actually published, although the fact that some items actually consulted in Cambridge University Library cannot be found in the British Library catalog makes this a less than precise operation.

To indicate at a glance the level of scientific expertise employed in each series, an asterisk identifies those authors where there is some evidence of academic qualifications and/or a professional affiliation (for details see the biographical register).

Note that in the case of those series covering a wider remit than science I have had to make decisions as to which titles to include, especially in areas such as anthropology and psychology.
