Message from AABDC

Initially, I had second thoughts about organizing the event this year due to the economic crisis we are in. But on reflection, this is theAsian American story – working hard and achieving success despite adversity and a tough environment. Recognizing achievement in challenging times sends a powerful message.

I extend my congratulations to the recipients of the 2009 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award and the Pinnacle Award for their accomplishments and contributions to help power the engine of the economy. Additionally, this year we have an international category, Asian Entrepreneur Excellence Award, to acknowledge the achieve- ments of Asian business men and women who are developing business John Wang with U.S. companies. President This year’s theme “Developing Asian Talent and Leadership in the Asian American Business Global Marketplace” reflects the rise of Asia in the world marketplace. Development Center Asian American entrepreneurs have multilingual and multicultural backgrounds that make them ideally suited to helping the U.S. stay competitive in the global economy. Corporations can leverage their Asian American professionals within their ranks to enhance business in Asia and broaden its own appeal as a global leader.

Since the inception of this project in 2001, AABDC has dedicated its efforts to promote and strengthen the voice and role of Asian Americans in the mainstream marketplace, and to highlight their achievements and contributions to the general economy. Tonight’s honorees represent a microcosm of the best of Asian American entrepreneurship and professionalism, with a pool of diverse and multi-talented individuals engaged in a wide range of business interests. The depth and breadth of their business undertakings clearly demonstrate that Asian Americans are an integral part of the larger economy.

Malcolm A. Smith was elected Temporary President and Majority Leader of the New York State Senate by his fellow Senators in January of 2009, becoming the first African-American Majority Leader in New York State history and the first Democratic leader in almost 40 years.

Upon election as Majority Leader, and based upon his prior leadership of the Democratic Minority, Senator Smith immediately took action to change the culture of the State Senate by making it more open, transparent, and bipartisan. On the first day in his new leadership role, Smith began delivering on these goals by introducing and passing rules changes which fundamentally reformed the way the Senate operates and increased transparency to the public. He also established a bi-partisan Malcolm A. Smith Temporary Committee on Rules and Administration to examine and President Pro Tem & make recommendations for major changes in the operation and rules of Majority Leader the Senate. New York State Senate Senator Smith has represented the 14th Senatorial District in Queens since winning a Special Election in March of 2000. His unique skills and diverse background in both the private and public sector has helped to foster expansion of social and economic opportunities for constituents in his home district of Southeast Queens.

In 2003 and 2004, as part of the New York to Shanghai Trade Mission, Senator Smith led a delegation of local businesses to China to open up a robust reciprocal exchange between the two countries. The trip was so successful that Senator Smith expanded those relationships to include an economic, cultural and educational “Sister to Sister” relationship between New York State and India to build ties between local businesses and international markets.

Senator Smith is a graduate of Fordham University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concen- tration in Economics. Senator Smith received an M.B.A. from Adelphi University with a concentration in Finance and Operations Management. Senator Smith also completed certificate programs at both Harvard Law and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, in Negotiations and “Strategies for Governing in an Economic Crisis,” respectively. Dr. Vishakha Desai is president of Asia Society, a global organization dedicated to preparing Asians and Americans for a shared future, where she leads the institution’s activities in the areas of policy, business, arts, culture and education. She is a frequent lecturer at inter- national gatherings and a commentator in the media addressing cultural, social, and political trends and their implications for the U.S. - Asia relationship and Asian regional ties.

Appointed president in 2004, Dr. Desai is leading an institutional expansion that includes a new India Centre in Mumbai which opened in 2006, and planned multi-million dollar facilities in Hong Kong Dr. Vishakha N. Desai and Houston. President She received her BA in political science from Bombay University and Asia Society an MA and PhD in Asian Art History from the University of Michigan. A recipient of numerous awards, including one of the “50 most distinguished Indian Americans,” (India Abroad), and as one of the “100 most powerful women leaders” in New York (Crains), and has four honorary degrees.

Dr. Desai is committed to public service and serves on the boards of The Brookings Institution, Citizens Committee for New York City, Asian University for Women and the New York City Advisory Commission for Cultural Affairs.

Cindy Hsu is an Emmy Award winning anchor and reporter who has been at CBS 2 News in New York City since 1993.

Ms. Hsu’s work at CBS 2 has been recognized with numerous awards. Her personal adoption story, “Bringing Rosie Home,” was nominated for an Emmy Award and won the New York AP Broadcasters Award for Best Feature. She received Emmy Awards for Outstanding Single Hard News Story for “Smuggled from China,” which exposed the horrific plights of Chinese refugees from the Golden Venture ship, and for her live coverage of the snowstorm of 1994. American Women in Radio and Television honored her with the Golden Apple Award, and she also received the Friends of Adoption Award from the Adoptive Cindy Hsu Parents Committee. Reporter and Anchor Prior to joining WCBS-TV, Ms. Hsu worked as a reporter and anchor at WCBS-TV WFRV-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin and for WTOV-TV in Steubenville, Ohio. She began her broadcasting career as an associate producer for WTVR-TV in Richmond, Virginia.

Ms. Hsu spends much of her off-duty time performing community work and is strongly involved with the Asian-American community. She is a Big Sister and has served on the Advisory Board of APEX, a group that pairs Asian professionals with recent immigrants and young people who need guidance. She’s served on the Board of Directors of the Museum of Chinese in the Americas and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as well as the Newswatch Advisory Council which monitors fairness in journalism. Hsu has been the co-chair of Cooks for Kids, an annual event that raises money for children living with AIDS and HIV, and she is actively involved with The Children’s Miracle Network. Ms. Hsu is also a former President of the New York Chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. Ms. Hsu is also a world-class dragon boater, competing with her team Women in Canoe. They represented the United States in the 2001 World Championship.

Ms. Hsu was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Coast Guard family that moved every two to four years. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in communication studies.

Pinnacle Award

Based in Beijing, Ms. Christianson is responsible for the oversight and global coordination of all Morgan Stanley’s business activities in China and has been in this position since 2006. She is also a member of Morgan Stanley’s global management committee and Asia Pacific Executive Committee.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Ms. Christianson was Chairman of China for Citigroup Global Markets (Asia) Ltd. She has also served as Chairman of China and Country Manager for Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB). She joined CSFB from Morgan Stanley where she had been an Executive Director and Beijing Chief Representative.

Wei Sun Christianson Ms. Christianson has advised on many landmark transactions in China, Managing Director and CEO including the initial public offerings of China Life, Sinopec, SMIC, Chalco, Sinotrans, and China Oilfield Services. She has also led the Morgan Stanley China execution of several significant M&A transactions involving Chinese companies.

Prior to her joining Morgan Stanley in 1998, Ms. Christianson was an associate director of the Corporate Finance Department at the Hong Kong Securities and Finance Commission (SFC) and was instrumental in developing the regulatory framework for the public listing of Mainland Chinese securities in Hong Kong. She was previously an attorney in the New York office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.

Ms. Christianson received her B.A. from Amherst College in 1985 and her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1989 and is admitted to practice in the State of New York. In January 2006 she was awarded the prestigious Columbia Law School Medal of Excellence which is given annually to two alumni who have distinguished themselves profession- ally. Prior recipients include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger.

Asian Entrepreneur Excellence Award

Ning Yuan, is president of China Construction America, Inc. (CCA), the U.S. arm of China State Construction Engineering Corp.(CSCEC). Mr. Yuan started his career with CSCEC in 1988 and became President of CCA in 2000. Under his leadership, CCA has made historic break- throughs in the world’s most competitive construction market; new contracts soared from $11 million in 2001 to $400 million in 2009 with turnover exceeding $100 million in 2008. CCA is involved in commercial, industrial, institutional and government projects, ranging from building works to civil and infrastructure works, and in a number of cases, is the first Chinese contractor to be awarded the contract. With its headquarters in Jersey City, New Jersey, CCA has business operations in New York, Washington DC, South Carolina, with more Ning Yuan than 150 employees, two-thirds of whom are local. President Mr. Yuan holds a civil engineering degree from Zhejiang University in China Construction China, a masters degree from Leibniz Universität Hannover in Germany, America, Inc. is a member of the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s School of Management advisory board, and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of International Strategic and Development, Tsinghua University, China.

Aziz Ahmad is President and CEO of UTC Associates, Inc., a company he co-founded in New York City. UTC is a leading systems and network integration company and developer of software for information technol- ogy and telecommunications applications. An accomplished business- man and network architect, Mr. Ahmad was the lead architect of AT&T’s VoIP networks. He has extensive experience in developing and rolling out new services from concept to revenue generation stage. He founded Vonair, Inc., a leading multimedia based applications provider, including VoIP client based, location-based applications, presence, instant messag- ing, and mobile client applications.

Mr. Ahmad is a board member of Grameen Solutions, Grameen IT Park in Bangladesh where Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus serves as the Chairman of the Board. Recently he was the recipient of First American Distinguished Alumni award of City University of Aziz Ahmad New York. He holds B.E. and M.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering CEO from The City College of New York (CUNY). During the past several UTC Associates, Inc. years, he has served as an adjunct professor at City Technical College (CUNY), and he has also taught graduate-level courses at Pace Univer- sity in converging technologies. ______

Roshan Baig is currently Manager for Technology Services at Capgemini Consulting Services, one of the big four consulting companies. Mr. Baig has provided thought leadership and technology solutions through man- agement of system development and projects for more than 15 years. He has successfully managed and delivered complex mission critical solutions including enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, global trade services and web applications with focus in health care, high-technology, web applications, regulatory compliance and manufacturing verticals. Mr. Baig is an Electrical Engineer and in his consulting role he has provided strategic direction for technology alignment with business processes for multi-billion dollar companies and has developed quality benchmarks for measuring project’s success and has excellent knowledge of industries best practices.

Sonny Chabra is Chairman and CEO of ASI System Integration, Inc. which he started in 2005. Mr. Chabra immigrated to the U.S. in 1985. In 1988, he joined American Mini Computer, Inc., which was later renamed AMC Computer Corp. In 1992, he purchased AMC and eight years later, when he sold it to a private equity firm, sales revenues had increased by more than 6,000% and achieved 34 consecutive profitable quarters. ASI continues to be profitable quarter after quarter. Mr. Chabra received the 2000 VARBusiness Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award, Ernst & Young’s 1998 “Entrepreneur of the Year” award and the “1999 Blue Chip Enterprise Executive of the Year” award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his dedicated support for the Indian community, in 2001, he received the “Ellis Island Medal of Honor” presented by the National Ethnic Coalition Organiza- tion and sponsored by the U.S. Congress; the “Punjabi Ratan Award” in Sonny Chabra 2000 from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton; the “Pride of India Gold Chairman & CEO Award” in 1998 from former Prime Minister of India, Honorable H.D. Jae Hyuk Chang is President and CEO of ISEC USA, LLC, which is an international sales and marketing, and trading company for petrochemi- cal, chemical and oil refinery industries. ISEC USA, LLC is the U.S. arm of ILSUNG Corporation, which is an oil and gas manufacturing company based in Korea . ISEC USA, LLC and ILSUNG Corporation produce oil and gas related processing equipment, such as reactors, shell and tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, columns, CCR and skid modules. Prior to becoming President of ISEC USA in 2005, Mr. Chang was Director of ILSUNG Corporation for nine years. Mr. Chang is based in Houston and travels globally about 11 times a year and spends a lot of his time in South Korea.

Mr. Chang was raised in South Korea before moving to the U.S. He received a B.S. (Business) from the University of Southern California, Jae Hyuk Chang Los Angeles and an M.B.A. from Rice University, Houston, TX. President & CEO ISEC USA, LLC.

Cindy Chen owns and operates several businesses – Beauty Beauty USA, Inc., Beauty Beauty International School and Farah Cosmetics International, Inc. When Beauty Beauty USA opened in the 1990s, it was a company with a unique concept – to provide the spa industry with a complete line of professional products and equipment at whole- sale prices. Believing that the four key elements to a successful spa are appeal, pricing, quality service and a hands-on relationship with clients, Beauty Beauty, with its innovative cost structure and client service, works with spa owners to help grow their business. Over the past 20 years, Ms. Chen has become a business professional in the beauty and wellness industry. She is devoted to her profession and takes great pride in mentoring her students individually. Her leadership qualities are evident in the professionally coordinated hair and beauty shows as well as professional products workshops that she organizes. Cindy K. Chen Vice President Ms. Chen grew up in Guangdong, China and graduated from Guang- zhou Hua Nan Teacher University. She is a licensed cosmetologist Beauty Beauty USA, Inc. and professional skincare educator. ______

John C. Chen is President of John C. Chen Architect, a firm he opened in 1997. Mr. Chen was born and raised in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China and moved to New York in the late 1980’s, where he worked at several jobs while going to college, ultimately becoming licensed as an architect in 1997 and a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1999. Mr. Chen is also the President of JL Nail Academy, Inc., a licensed vocational school in New York. He regularly returns to China, where he is guest professor at Sichuan University’s School of Architecture and Environmental Sciences. Mr. Chen was formerly the Chairman of the Sino-American Business Association and has served as the senior architect and engineering consultant to the association since 2002. He has received a number of awards in Sichuan and New York for his work in architectural design and development.

John C. Chen Mr. Chen received an M.A in Education and Psychology from the President Northwest Teachers University, China, and completed two years of doctoral research in Education and Psychology at Cornell University; an John C. Chen Architect, PLLC M.A from John Jay College of Criminal Justice; B.A in Architecture and Urban Design from New York Institute of Technology, City University of New York.

Steve Chen has overall responsibility for the operations of Crystal Window & Door Systems and its aluminum extrusion subsidiary. Only thirty, he has already acquired a significant background in window manufacturing and installation. His father Thomas Chen founded the company, so he grew up in the business enabling him to see many aspects of the operations directly, gaining critical first-hand experience. Before joining Crystal in 2003 as project manager, Mr. Chen worked for First Union Asset Management as leader of a team of investment account managers. Recently, Glass Magazine spotlighted Mr. Chen as one of the industry’s “20 Under 40” top executives nationwide, and was recognized by the Queens Chamber of Commerce as one of the Top 10 Business Executives Under 40. Mr. Chen continues Crystal’s community philanthropy and was honored in 2009 by The Child Center of New York and in 2006 by The Queens Library Foundation. Anne Chow is Senior Vice President of AT&T Operations’ Premier Client Group, where she leads a national sales and support organiza- tion of over 2,000 professionals responsible for delivering a full range of communications solutions, including wireless and wired services, to enterprise customers, which represent one of AT&T’s largest retail business markets with revenues of over $9 billion. Ms. Chow serves on AT&T’s “University” governing board which supports the corporation’s leadership development imperative, and is an Advisory Council member the Asian employee resource group, Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional and Community Advancement.

She is a founding member of the National Board of Directors for the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund, and Chairperson of the National Advisory Council for the Asian American Justice Center. Anne Chow Senior Vice President Ms. Chow holds a M.B.A. with Distinction, as well as a B.S. and M.E. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, where she also was AT&T Operations, Inc. a Bellcore Engineering Scholar and was awarded the Lester B. Knight Scholarship for Excellence in Engineering and Business. Ms. Chow is a graduate from the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School of Music.

Jennifer Ching is Director of Appleseed’s New York Office. Appleseed is a non-profit public interest justice network with 16 offices in the U.S. and Mexico that leverages private sector talent to engage in social change. As Director of the New York Office, Ms. Ching has overseen the launch of over 10 projects creating innovating public-private partnerships with major NYC-area law firms, financial service providers, insurers and gov- ernment institutions. Prior to joining Appleseed, Ms. Ching was an associate with the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where her pro bono work included the representation of individuals held in Guantanamo. She was a Gibbons Fellow in Public Interest Law and Constitutional Litigation in 2002-2004, where she litigated a range of civil rights matters, and a Skadden Fellow from 2000-2002, where she started a legal services program for immigrants in Newark, New Jersey. Ms. Ching has taught at Rutgers School of Law and has sat on the board of a number of public interest organizations. Jennifer Ching Director of New York Office Ms. Ching graduated from Harvard University in 1996 and obtained her Appleseed law degree from NYU in 2000. ______

Genius Kids was started by Rennu Dhillon in 2001 in San Francisco. Today it boasts 5 centers with over 200 students and the future plans are to become a franchise and leader in early education. Ms. Dhillon believes that everyone is born a “genius”. Her unique instructional methods and stimulating curriculum, has resulted phenomenal results and children as young as age 5 are topping the Stanford University Gifted and Talented Education Math programs. Her reading, math and science programs have children as young as age 2.3 mastering fluent reading and speaking skills; children as young as 20 months old are learning to read and speak by the age of 2.5 years old. Her curriculum is unique to Genius Kids Learning Center and will soon be available online. Genius Kids was recently rated “Best of the East Bay” and was awarded “Most Likely Place to find a Silicon Valley Inventor” in 2004. Recently, Genius Kids has been nomi- nated as the Best Preschool in Alameda County for 2009.

Dr. Apurv Gupta is a principal at Atria BPH, a healthcare services and consulting company. He was previously Interim Vice President of Medical Affairs at Caritas Norwood Hospital (CNH) in Massachusetts, overseeing clinical process, quality, regulatory and professional standards for over 400 physicians. As Medical Director of the Hospitalist Program at CNH and CEO of Hospitalist Partners, LLC he developed a model t Hospitalist system focused on performance improvement and targeted outcomes. Dr. Gupta is a Past President and current Trustee of the Indian Medical Association of New England, a 30 year old organization dedicated to phy- sician education and charitable healthcare projects; Co-Chair of the Boston Chapter of Akshaya Patra USA, a charity providing food to 1,000,000 underprivileged children a day throughout India. He is an active member of the Plymouth District Medical Society, the Society of Hospital Medi- cine, the Massachusetts Medical Society, American College of Physician Apurv Gupta Executives and American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. Principal Dr. Gupta completed his residency from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Atria BPH Center, his MD and ScB from Brown University School of Medicine, and an MPH in Healthcare Management from Harvard University School of Public Health. ______

Thejaswi Gurumurthy is the COO and co-founder of Syven Global Ser- vices, a business consulting and knowledge services firm.Mr. Gurumurthy- manages Syvens business development and client management efforts. Mr. Gurumurthyhas significant background in helping clients solve strategy and operations issues. He has helped investment banks architect, implement and execute strategic outsourcing initiatives in the field of financial research and analysis. He has worked with senior bankers onhigh profile M&A deals, across industry sectors, to identify and execute financial analysis projects at offshore locations. Mr. Gurumurthywas instrumental in steering the compa- nys direction towards the fast-growing knowledge services industry. Mr. Gurumurthy teaches valuation and modeling to investment banking analysts and associates at banks, universities and corporate businesses, as an instructor at Training The Street. He isan active member of the career development committee atNew York Association of Security Analysts. Anurag Harsh is the Vice President and Director of National Strategic Solutions at CBS Interactive where he leads strategic media sales and business expansion efforts for the CBS Interactive Music Group, the largest digital music and streaming company in the world. Prior to CBS, Mr. Harsh was the Director of Business Development at CNN where he was responsible for driving strategic growth that led CNN to become the No. 1 news site of 2008. Prior to CNN, Mr. Harsh spent 12 years as a management consultant leading the media practices of Deloitte and Charles River. Mr. Harsh authored the McGraw-Hill wireless media bestseller book titled “M-Commerce Security”. He has a masters in classical music and is also a trained vocalist, performing recently to a sold out solo concert at Carnegie Hall. He chairs the Wharton Media Leaders Program of the Wharton Alumni Network of NY. He also runs the “Save Dal Lake” phil- Anurag Harsh anthropic movement comprising young Indian Americans that focuses on the environmental degradation of India’s Dal Lake, VP and Director, the largest natural lake in the world. Dr. Handan He is Director of the nonclinical pharmacokinetics and phar- macodynamics section at Novartis in the US. In recognition of her leader- ship, expertise, and creativity towards pharmacokinetic sciences, Dr. He received the prestigious Novartis Global VIVA (Vision, Innovation, Value, Achievement) Award in 2008, which recognizes her as a life-long Novartis Leading Scientist. Dr. He has contributed to the launch of novel drugs and therapies and pioneered the application of modeling tools to optimize the design of in vivo preclinical pharmacokinetic studies including drug form selection studies. Her innovations in human dose projection have helped Novartis to develop efficacious medicines. Dr. He is an active member on the PhRMA industry consortium exploring human dose projection methods. She has spoken at national and interna- tional conferences, including AAPS, WBA and IBC. She is an Executive Board Member for the Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SAPA) and has been the triple recipient of SAPA’s Outstand- Handan He ing Contributions and Excellence Award, and has been an invited expert Principal Fellow, Director speaker to China regarding regulatory filings with Health Authorities. Bill Imada is the founder, chairman and CEO of IW Group, a nationally ranked advertising, marketing and public relations firm that specializes in the growing U.S. Asian markets. Tian-Fang Jing received his BSCE from Tsinghua University, Beijing (1977), and spent four years as an assistant research engineer at the China Academy of Building Research. Zaki Uddin Khalifa emigrated to the U.S. from Lahore, Pakistan when he was 32. He left his career in international banking behind and opened Zaki Oriental Rugs in High Point, NC in 1977. The company specializes in importing high quality hand knotted rugs from India Paki- stan, China, Iran, Nepal and Turkey, with customers from all over the world. Shahid Khan built a reputation as a strategic marketing guru in the phar- maceutical industry working for both Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline. Raghu Krishnamoorthy is Senior Human Resources Manager for GE Corporate Commercial & Communications. He has held this position since May 2006. Ignacio Prats is the Director of Global Oral Care procurement for Colgate Palmolive.
