Antaeus the Conqueror Antaeus is an Ancient Greek Mythological person. He was the giant son of Poseidon, god of the Sea, And Gaia, god of the Earth. Antaeus was a legendary wrestler. He challenged everyone who passed by his area to a wrestling match. And he never lost; he was invincible, Antaeus conquered all. But there’s a secret to why he always won his wrestling matches. Antaeus drew strength from his mother, the earth. As long as he was in contact with the earth, he drew power. So think about: In Greek wrestling, like the Olympic sport, The goal is to force your opponents to the ground, Pinning them to the earth. But when Antaeus is pinned to the earth, His strength returns and grows, Enabling him to overcome his opponent. Now let’s be clear: This is myth. Fiction. Not historical truth. Greek Myth is very different to the Christian Gospel. Jesus Christ is not myth, not fiction. His life, his death, his resurrection, his ascension. It’s all a matter of historical record. We believe the Gospel because it’s all true. But while the story of Antaeus is a myth, It offers us an interesting illustration. Antaeus was the all-conquering wrestler. And Paul tells Christians in Romans 8: We are more than conquerors. 2. God is For Us Today we conclude our series on Romans ch.8. -

EVALUERINGSRAPPORT 2018 Evaluering af MXD’s aktiviteter i 2018 Det er MXD’s mission at øge eksporten af dansk professionel populærmusik og herigen- nem at styrke den kunstneriske udvikling og forretningsgrundlaget for danske kunstnere og musikselskaber. MXD’s Strategi 2016-19 definerer tre hovedopgaver, som skal realisere denne mission: 1. Eksportstøtte 2. Internationale projekter 3. Videndeling og kommunikation. I det følgende beskrives aktiviteterne og resultaterne inden for hver af disse. Ad. 1. Eksportstøtte Danske bands/musikselskaber kan søge MXD om støtte til både egne eksportprojekter og til deltagelse i MXD’s eksportprojekter i udlandet, såsom handelsmissioner, Danish Night At Reeperbahn Festival, Ja Ja Ja Club Night etc. Der kan søges om støtte via tre puljer: 1. Eksportstøtte til markedsudvikling 2. Dynamisk eksportstøtte til unikke markedsmuligheder 3. Eksportstøtte til branchefolk I marts 2017 lancerede MXD og DPA (foreningen for sangskrivere, komponister, tekst- forfattere og producere inden for det kommercielle og populære felt) en ny eksportstøt- tepulje, som har til formål at styrke eksporten af dansk-producerede sange: 4. Eksportstøtte til branchefolk - sangskrivning Støttemidlerne kommer fra Kodas Kulturelle Midler, og puljen administreres af MXD. BMA PRESENTS 2019 JAZZ IN THE SCULPTURE GARDEN CONCERTS Tickets on sale June 5 for Vijay Iyer, Matana Roberts, and Wendel Patrick Quartet BALTIMORE, MD (May 2, 2018)—The Baltimore Museum of Art’s (BMA) popular summer jazz series returns with three concerts featuring national and regional talent in the museum’s lush gardens. Featured performers are Vijay Iyer (June 29), Matana Roberts (July 13), and the Wendel Patrick Quartet (July 27). General admission tickets are $50 for a single concert or $135 for the three-concert series. BMA Member tickets are $35 for a single concert or $90 for the three-concert series. Tickets are on sale Wednesday, June 5, and will sell out quickly, so reservations are highly recommended. Tickets for BMA Members are available beginning Wednesday, May 29. Saturday, June 29 – Vijay Iyer, jazz piano Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer sees jazz as “creating beauty and changing the world” (NPR) and is recognized as “one of the best in the world at what he does.” (Pitchfork). Saturday, July 13 – Matana Roberts, experimental jazz saxophonist As “the spokeswoman for a new, politically conscious and refractory music scene” (Jazzthetik), Matana Roberts’ music has been praised for its “originality and … historic and social power” (music critic Peter Margasak). Saturday, July 27 – Wendel Patrick Quartet Wendel Patrick is the “wildly talented” (Baltimore Sun) alter ego of acclaimed classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift. The Baltimore-based musician creates a unique blend of jazz, electronica, and hip hop. The BMA’s beautiful Janet and Alan Wurtzburger Sculpture Garden presents 19 early modernist works by artists such as Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, and Auguste Rodin amidst a flagstone terrace and fountain. -

Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Howard Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen This dissertation analyzes the three main protagonists of Lucan’s Bellum Civile through their attempts to utilize, resist, or match a pattern of action which I call the “formula.” Most evident in Caesar, the formula is a cycle of alternating states of energy that allows him to gain a decisive edge over his opponents by granting him the ability of perpetual regeneration. However, a similar dynamic is also found in rivers, which thus prove to be formidable adversaries of Caesar in their own right. Although neither Pompey nor Cato is able to draw on the Caesarian formula successfully, Lucan eventually associates them with the river-derived variant, thus granting them a measure of resistance (if only in the non-physical realm). By tracing the development of the formula throughout the epic, the dissertation provides a deeper understanding of the importance of natural forces in Lucan’s poem as well as the presence of an underlying drive that unites its fractured world. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 2010 Media Contact: Elizabeth East Telephone: 310-822-4955 Email: [email protected] Alison Saar Foison and Fallow 15 September through 30 October 2010 Opening reception for the artist: Wednesday 15 September, 6-8 p.m. Venice, CA –- L.A. Louver is pleased to announce an exhibition of new three-dimensional mixed media works on paper and sculpture by Alison Saar. In this new work Saar explores the cycle of birth, maturation, death and regeneration through the changing season and her own experience of aging. The two drawings Foison, 2010 and Fallow, 2010, which also give their titles to the exhibition, derive from Saar’s recent fascination with early anatomy illustration. As Saar has stated “The artists of the time seemed compelled to breathe life back into the cadavers, depicting them dancing with their entrails, their skin draped over their arm like a cloak, or fe- tuses blooming from their mother’s womb.” In these drawings, Saar has replaced the innards of the fi gures with incongruous elements, to create a small diorama: Foison, 2010 depicts ripe, fruitful cotton balls and their nemesis the cotton moth, in caterpillar, chrysalis and mature moth stage; while Fallow, 2010 portrays a fallow fawn fetus entwined in brambles. In creating these works Saar references and reexamines her early work Alison Saar that often featured fi gures with “cabinets’ in their chest containing relics Fallow, 2010 mixed media of their life. 55 1/2 x 29 x 1 in. (141 x 73.7 x 2.5 cm) My work has always dealt with dualities -- usually of the wild, feral side in battle with the civil self -----Alison Saar One of two sculptures in the exhibition, En Pointe, 2010 depicts a fi gure hanging by her feet and sprouting massive bronze antlers. -

THE YEAR IN REVIEWTHE WALTERS ART MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORT 2003 France, France, Ms.M.638, folio 23 verso, 1244–1254, The Pierpont Morgan Library, New York Dear Friends: After more than three intense years renovating and reinstalling our Centre Street Building, which con- cluded in June 2002 with the opening of our transformed 19th-century galleries, we stepped back in fiscal year 2002–2003 to refocus attention on our Charles Street Building, with its Renaissance, baroque, and rococo collections, in preparation for its complete reinstallation for a fall 2005 opening. For the Walters, as for cultural institutions nationwide, this was more generally a time of reflection and retrenchment in the wake of lingering uncertainty after the terrorist attack of 9/11, the general economic downturn, and significant loss of public funds. Nevertheless, thanks to Mellon Foundation funding, we were able to make three new mid-level curatorial hires, in the departments of ancient, medieval, and Renaissance and baroque art. Those three endowed positions will have lasting impact on the museum, as will a major addition to our galleries: in September 2002, we opened a comprehensive display of the arts of the ancient Americas, thanks to a long-term loan from the Austen-Stokes Foundation. Now, for the first time, we are able to expand on a collecting area Henry Walters entered nearly a century ago, to match our renowned ancient and medieval holdings in quality and range with more than four millennia of works from the western hemisphere. The 2002–2003 season was marked by three major exhibitions organized by the Walters, and by the continued international tour of a fourth Walters show, Desire and Devotion. -
