Long before I ever set foot on Kent State’s campus I spent four years at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA. He cultivated my writing and historical thinking with pastoral care and intellectual rigor. It was Dr. Brad Frey’s suggestion that I read his brother’s Letters from ‘Nam that first made me openly weep on the subject of history. In several of Brad’s classes that followed, I realized I had a calling to teach and an aspiration to teach like him. Finally, Dr. Don Opitz developed in me a genuine love for my profession of teaching, but also a way of loving people in the midst of my calling. v These gentlemen taught me far more than subject matter. D, 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Journal entry February 10, 1865 Introduction This dissertation examines the relationship between the soldiers of southeastern Ohio and their families during the Civil War. It began as a question of soldier motivation, but morphed into a much larger and more complicated journey to discover the connection between the soldiers and the home front. For many thousands who never left their southeastern Ohio homes, the Civil War was a sacrificial and excruciatingly painful time. They watched their loved ones leave, never to return. They saw some return battered and bruised, some unable to work or function again. The central thesis of this dissertation is that the soldiers and their families fought the war together. Despite the complications on the home front, the difficulties at war, and the horrific suffering for everyone involved, through constant correspondence and involvement in the war effort, the soldiers and civilians of southeastern Ohio struggled to fight the Civil War. These citizen soldiers of southeastern Ohio were largely farmers, laborers, and miners who joined the war effort for many reasons. However, by deconstructing their understanding of the war and by viewing them in relationship with their communities and 1 Andrew Jones, Co. While this classification is debatable, the role of documentaries as vehicles for collective memory is vital to the societal reconstructions of historical events, a connection that must be understood in order to properly assign meaning to the them. This thesis examines this relationship, focusing specifically on the documentaries produced related to trauma (in this case the September 11 attacks on the United States) as a means to enhance understanding of the role these films play in the lives and memories of their collective audiences. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans.

    513-721-LAND(5263) [email protected] The History of the Land of Indian Hill Blome Road Bridge c. 1888 Blome Road Bridge was built in 1888 by The Queen City Bridge Company. It is a one lane bridge that crosses over Sycamore Creek. It is the only surviving bridge by The Queen City Bridge Company. Blome Bridge is 127 years old. It was created with a pin connected Pratt through truss bridge, making it unusual in design. It was composed of six panels, most noted for slight skew. The Queen City Bridge Company used pipe railing that passes through the vertical members and also the end post. It was great for horse and wagon passage. The Blome Road Bridge was restored by Hamilton County in 1990. Hamilton County built a beam bridge underneath the truss bridge so not to alter the original design and materials. Buckingham House c. 1790 The Buckingham House is one of the few farm houses left in Indian Hill; built during the Civil War. The Buckingham’s came to Ohio in 1790. They purchased 1,100 acres of land in Indian Hill, known as Camp Dennison. They owned and operated mills on the Little Miami River. The Buckingham home is surrounded by 13 acres of land called Bonnell Park. Indian Hill Bridges There are two bridges in Indian Hill. One is located at Shawnee Run Road and State Route 126. This bridge was used by Pennsylvania Railroad trains to move cargo. Today the remnants of the bridge can still be seen by bicyclist and joggers.

    Spring Grove Cemetery, once characterized as blending "the elegance of a park with the pensive beauty of a burial-place," is the final resting- place of forty Cincinnatians who were generals during the Civil War. Forty For the Union: Civil War Generals Buried in Spring Grove Cemetery by James Barnett f the forty Civil War generals who are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, twenty-three had advanced from no military experience whatsoever to attain the highest rank in the Union Army. This remarkable feat underscores the nature of the Northern army that suppressed the rebellion of the Confed- erate states during the years 1861 to 1865. Initially, it was a force of "inspired volunteers" rather than a standing army in the European tradition. Only seven of these forty leaders were graduates of West Point: Jacob Ammen, Joshua H. Bates, Sidney Burbank, Kenner Garrard, Joseph Hooker, Alexander McCook, and Godfrey Weitzel. Four of these seven —Burbank, Garrard, Mc- Cook, and Weitzel —were in the regular army at the outbreak of the war; the other three volunteered when the war started. Only four of the forty generals had ever been in combat before: William H. Lytle, August Moor, and Joseph Hooker served in the Mexican War, and William H. Baldwin fought under Giuseppe Garibaldi in the Italian civil war. This lack of professional soldiers did not come about by chance. When the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia in 1787, its delegates, who possessed a vast knowledge of European history, were determined not to create a legal basis for a standing army. The founding fathers believed that the stand- ing armies belonging to royalty were responsible for the endless bloody wars that plagued Europe.

    THE CONTROVERSY OVER CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE by WILLIAM MOSLEY-JENSEN (Under the Direction of Edward Panetta) ABSTRACT The scientific consensus on climate change is not recognized by the public. This is due to many related factors, including the Bush administration’s science policy, the reporting of the controversy by the media, the public’s understanding of science as dissent, and the differing standards of argumentation in science and the public sphere. Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth was produced in part as a response to the acceptance of climate dissent by the Bush administration and achieved a rupture of the public sphere by bringing the technical issue forward for public deliberation. The rupture has been sustained by dissenters through the use of argument strategies designed to foster controversy at the expense of deliberation. This makes it incumbent upon rhetorical scholars to theorize the closure of controversy and policymakers to recognize that science will not always have the answers. State Street, West Lafayette, IN, 47907 Introduction Butternut (Juglans cinerea), also known as white wal- nut, is a native hardwood related to black walnut (Juglans nigra) and other members of the walnut family. Butternut is a medium-sized tree with alternate, pinnately com- pound leaves, that bears large, sharply ridged, cylindrical nuts inside sticky green hulls that earned it the nickname lemon-nut (Rink, 1990). The nuts, a preferred food of squirrels and other wildlife, were collected and eaten by Native Americans (Waugh, 1916; Hamel and Chiltoskey, 1975) and early settlers, who also valued butternut for its workable, medium brown-colored heartwood (Kel- logg, 1919), and as a source of medicine (Johnson, 1884; Lawrence, 1998), dyes (Hamel and Chiltoskey, 1975), and sap sugar. Butternut’s native range extends over the entire north- eastern quarter of the United States, including many states immediately west of the Mississippi River. Butter- nut is more cold-tolerant than black walnut, and it grows as far north as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, New Brunswick, southern Quebec, and Ontario (Fig.1).

Rhodes (ABSTRACT) This is a biography of Confederate Major General Jeremy Francis Gilmer. The primary emphasis of the paper is on Gilmer's career during the Civil War and his contributions to the Confederate Bureau of Engineers. Jeremy Francis Gilmer was a native of North Carolina. In 1835 he was appointed to West Point from where he gradu- ated in 1839, ranked fourth in his class. He was subse- quently appointed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. When the Civil War began, Gilmer and his family were stationed in San Francisco. He resigned his U.S. Army commission when North Carolina seceded from the Union. After he returned to the South, Gilmer was assigned to Albert Sidney Johnston's command in Kentucky. At the battle of Shiloh Gilmer was wounded and subsequently reassigned to Virginia. Following a brief assignment to the Army of Northern Virginia, Gilmer was named Chief of the Confederate Bureau of Engineers. The Corps grew in numbers and influence as a direct result of Gilmer's influence. At the end of the war Gilmer settled in Savannah with his family where he became President of the Savannah Gas Light Company. He held that position for the remainder of his life.
