This does not mean the named ensemble will solely perform the works of that artist, but, invoking these names reminds us, and our audience, of our music’s great history and its interconnectedness. In addition, ensemble coaches will incorporate important aspects of each artist’s work, into their ensemble teaching throughout the year. The named ensembles and their coaches are: The Dave Brubeck Ensemble, in the spirit of integrating arts, coached by Helen Sung; The Jelly Roll Morton Ensemble, in the spirit of interpreting the original meanings of jazz, coached by Doug Wamble; The Dizzy Gillespie Ensemble, in the spirit of innovation, dance, Afro-Latin music, humor, and teaching, coached by Elio Villafranca; The Max Roach Ensemble, in the spirit of Civil Rights experimentation and understanding of the African Diaspora, coached by Ulysses Owens Jr.; The Mary Lou Williams Ensemble, in the spirit of stride piano, arranging, and intellectual discourse on music techniques and meaning, coached by Bruce Williams; The Duke Ellington Ensemble (Artist Diploma Ensemble), in the spirit of being ambassadors to the world, coached by Ben Wolfe. 2 Meet the Coaches Andy Farber Award-winning jazz composer, arranger, and saxophonist Andy Farber has worked extensively with legendary jazz singer Jon Hendricks and with Juilliard Jazz Director Wynton Marsalis. He met Hendricks in 1993 and collaborated on his CD Boppin’ at the Blue Note, writing arrangements featuring Hendricks and guests Al Grey, Marsalis, Benny Golson, Red Holloway, and Clark Terry. He has written arrangements for numerous artists and ensembles including Shirley Horn, Bobby Short, Joe Lovano, Joe Temperley, Regina Carter, Lee Konitz, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Frankie Laine, Billy Stritch, Robert Downey Jr., Fantasia Barrino, Vanessa Williams, the Boston Pops Orchestra, Philly Pops Orchestra, and several symphony orchestras throughout Europe. He has toured with Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra where he has also served as guest conductor. Additionally, he has been a guest conductor with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, and for numerous university and high school ensembles. In 2013 Mr. Marsalis asked Mr. Farber to assemble the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars which was featured in the Broadway musical After Midnight and garnered seven Tony Award nominations. He continues to lead the Andy Farber Orchestra, which recently backed Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for their PBS special Cheek to Cheek Live. Mr. Farber teaches jazz composition and arranging at Juilliard and in 2015 was named music director of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. Ben Wolfe Bassist, composer, and Juilliard Jazz faculty member, Ben Wolfe has released eight CDs comprised solely of his original music, including his recent Posi-Tone Records release The Whisperer. Born in Baltimore and raised in Portland, Ore., Mr. Wolfe has gained a large following from his performances with Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., and Diana Krall. Early in his career, he formed a duo with Mr. Connick and went on to record more than a dozen albums and soundtracks. During his years with Mr. Connick, he performed on numerous world tours as musical director. He then joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Mr. Wolfe became an integral part of Diana Krall’s touring band and played on many of her recordings, including the Grammy Award-winning When I Look In Your Eyes. As a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Mr. Wolfe performed with jazz legends including Joe Henderson, Doc Cheatham, Jon Hendricks, Harry “Sweets” Edision, and Billy Higgins.
