ONE HUNDRED FIFTEENTH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Friday, May 22, 2020

To the Class of 2020:

The spirit of commencement has always been joyous yet reflective, triumphant yet serious. This year is no different. Over the past weeks, you have demonstrated why we celebrate your graduation and why we take serious note of your achievements. You have spent years at Juilliard delving into the art of generating shared experiences, and in the last semester you have developed ways to continue to do so, despite our separation. It is in your very practice to create energy and excellence no matter the circumstance, and in this time, that ability is particularly essential and marks your success as students and, now, graduates.

Amid the uncertainty of this moment, I urge you to continue forging this path. I ask you to embrace the spirit of celebration today and take the challenges of this time as fuel for your personal ingenuity and participation because you have accomplished something extraordinary. At Juilliard, you have not only contributed to the richness of your own artistic development and lives but have devoted yourselves to the craft of togetherness—to the network of mutuality which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. termed our interdependence. Your work as artists asks us to come together, to share, and to connect. Now, more than ever, we see that work’s true importance; it is a superpower that I hope is ever magnified. Never stop exploring the breadth of your ability to unite.

As we celebrate your graduation, we also recognize those who brought you to this milestone. We thank the families, mentors, and friends, always remembering that none of us does anything alone. On behalf of our students, I want to also thank the entire Juilliard community for its flexibility, support, and dedication to excellence. In difficult times, we do well to not focus on what may be missing but to revisit and reaffirm our values with renewed commitment. Today, we have our belief in art, our community, and the inspiring accomplishments of the Class of 2020.

Let these accomplishments radiate outwards, making them the bedrock of your connection to the world. Class of 2020, I hope you feel the energy from myself and all of us at Juilliard. Congratulations! Today is yours, and tomorrow awaits your powerful voices, bright minds, and collective hope.

Onward!
