My dear friends in Christ Jesus:

We are preparing for Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord and it is important for us to discover new ways to enter into Holy Week as a “stay at home people”. Honestly, there is an ache in my heart in not being able to celebrate these precious days with you as they are magnificent rituals of faith and life in following Christ and being renewed in our own journey of dying and rising. Please follow the many instructions and schedules in the bulletin and online in order to help you in the midst of our not being able to gather. This is already a form of fasting and penance which we need to offer to Jesus for ourselves and the world.

Welcome to During the ritual of blessing the Palm branches, one of the options for the Co-Cathedral of prayer is: St. John the Evangelist “Increase the faith of those who place their hope in you, O God, and Our parishioners, the parish staff and graciously hear the prayers of those who call on you, that we, who hold high I, as , hope that your visit to these branches to hail Christ in his triumph, may bear fruit for you by good our church will be a prayerful time works accomplished in him. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen” while at the Mayo Clinic or while you are visiting our city for any other reason. We encourage you to While we are such beggars in this desert experience, we ask Christ to consider Co-Cathedral of the St. John increase our faith and locate His presence in the midst of our longing for the Evangelist as your church away healing and the need to stay with the real. As we search for our path, there from home. The Sacrament of Anointing of the “Six days before the Passover, when the Lord came into the city of Sick is available by request. If you have recently moved to Jesus is mercy and the journey to Jerusalem and being welcomed into the our city and desire to join the parish city was the path for our mercy and ultimately new life. CO-CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST

OUR DOMESTIC CHURCH This week we wanted to share some examples of our St. John’s community participating in Mass from their homes and living out our call to be a Domestic Church. The Domestic Church is the starting place for how we live our faith in our families, parishes and community. Parishioners Laura and Tony Miller share about experiencing Mass at home with their 2 year old daughter: “I think especially for young kids, it's really a challenge for them to understand that we're ‘doing’ Mass, not just watching it. (Even when we attend Mass, this is an issue, but even more so from home.) I try not to get too concerned with what she's doing, and just participate in Mass the best that I can myself. This won't be forever; we'll be back to attending Mass together soon. In the meantime, we are also trying even more than usual to pray together as a family. I think the regular day-to-day practice of our faith in the domestic church teaches kids it is about more than a once-a-week Mass.” Parishioner and St. John’s staff member Mary Vlazny shares: “As we attend Mass in our homes, our Domestic Churches, it can be a major shift in many ways. Here I am, in my home watching a device I frequently use for entertainment, work, school, or , but for a more profound purpose. The time is unprecedented for most of us, as I am usually either very busy and this is a distraction, or I am exhausted and this is a distraction! It also differs in purpose and focus as I am being called to actively participate in the most significant liturgical celebration, worship, of our faith…in my home. I am suddenly aware of praying with the universal Church in an urgent way for our world! My participation is both a privilege and an obligation to pray for those who are close to us and our suffering and fearful global community. I am intentionally making time and space in an otherwise fractured moment for the nurturing of consolation and hope. This is Lent of 2020.” Parishioner and mother of three, Sheila Donovan shared her family’s experience of Mass from their living room, “We watched in our living room, chairs lined up like a ‘pew.’ Dressed up for church sans shoes so the kids recognized this wasn’t just a TV show but something important. We had toys strewn about us which was a huge mistake. We had the dog with us at Mass for the first time which the kids loved. We watched live from Basilica where we had gone to college, which we as parents loved!” While we can’t physically be together celebrating the Sacraments, we are still united with one another and with the whole Universal Church. Please continue to share your experiences with us and with one another. If you are feeling alone and missing the fellowship of our community during this time, we remind you as the Catechism says: “No one is without a family in this world: the Church is a home and family for everyone, especially those who 'labor and are heavy laden.'” (CCC#172). Until we can be physically united as a Parish family at St. John’s, we hope you’ll join us for a live stream of Mass this weekend, keep reading for more information!

Litany of Saints for the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Parish Community

The Litany of the Saints reminds us of a moving line from one of the Eucharistic prayers: “May their merits and prayers gain us Your constant help and protection.” We call on the Communion of Saints, Cloud of Witnesses, and our own ancestral ‘saints’ to pray for us and help us to shoulder the burdens of illness and to provide relief when we need it most as together, we call on the Saints so familiar to our own faith community.

San Riccardo Pampuri: You cared for the sick with charity and kindness seeing Jesus in your patients…Pray for us Saint Josephine Bakhita: Patron saint of Sudan and our Seeds of Wisdom South Sudan community, you taught that transformation is possible through suffering…Pray for us Saint Joseph: Protector of families and Patron of Universal Church…Pray for us Saint John the Evangelist: Patron of our Co-Cathedral…Pray for us Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Americas and Indigenous Peoples, Our Mother…Pray for us Mary Waiting: Your open hands reach out to us with compassion, assurance, and hope…trusting in God’s abiding love and mercy…Pray for us Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist and Mary the Mother of Jesus: Together after the Resurrection, you cared for one another as Christ called you to do from the Cross, ‘in the Christian tradition that bears witness to courage and vulnerability, and whose mandate is demonstrating love. This shared Love is the answer.’…Pray for us Saint Luke: Patron St. of Physicians…Pray for us Saint Raphael: Patron Saint of Healing…Pray for us Sacred Heart of Jesus: Have Mercy on us.

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
