HUMAN CONCERNS Join in the Christmas Spirit Mercy's 39th Annual Christmas Outreach Program

Once again we are inviting you to share in the 39th year of Mercy Hospital's Christmas Basket Outreach to the elderly. For over 30 of those years, St. James has partnered with us to bring a special Christmas gift to our elderly friends. Thousands of lives have been touched by your faithful and generous participation. Truly, your commitment allows Mercy to continue its Christmas Outreach to so many. Receiving this "Special Box" is such a welcomed gift. As Christmas approaches, we are again extending an invitation to you to participate in the gift of giving. We are hopeful that you will find a way to help those less fortunate by preparing a box and extending the true spirit of Christmas to our special friends. On Saturday, November 16th, and Sunday, November 17th, we will distribute empty boxes after each Mass in the Church and Parish Center. If you are interested in preparing a box of food, we ask that you use the boxes that we provide. Each box will have detailed lists and guidelines that we would like you to follow. Return your wrapped and filled boxes Saturday December 7th or Sunday, December 8th. We also need reliable volunteers with cars to deliver the boxes on Saturday morning, December 14th. Last year, 180 of St. James' Parishioners generously participated in the distribution of the boxes to the homes where our friends live. If you are able to volunteer, please fill out a card when you pick up your box. The elderly receiving boxes live primarily on the south side of . Because the boxes are heavy, we require at least 2 volunteers per car; the delivery takes about 2 hours.

Mercy is so grateful for the parish of St. James' annual support. With your continued participation we can carry on this wonderful Christmas tradition.

A Message from St. James….

This weekend is our annual Mercy Hospital Christmas Box program that you so generously have supported for the past 34 years. These boxes will be delivered next month to the elderly living on Chicago’s South side and for many it will be the only Christmas present they’ll receive.

When this program began in 1978, Mercy brought 15 boxes - this year they will bring 750, a real testimony to your generosity. We urge you to take a box and inside you’ll find clear information on what to put into it. (Please see food list on next page.) Boxes are to be returned on December 7th & 8th.

We also ask that before heading to the grocery store, you purchase your Manna gift cards and use them to buy the groceries for the box. This way, you’ll combine your shopping and support the Parish as well. You can use your week- ly Manna envelope to buy the cards.

If you really want to share some of your blessings, consider being a driver to deliver 4-5 boxes on Sat., Dec. 14th. It takes about 2 hours and you’ll receive very clear directions on delivery. If you have young children, it’s a real eye opener for them to see how little so many of the elderly have in comparison to what they enjoy. Driver sign-up cards are available at the exits.

Lastly, it is very important that if you take a box, it must be returned, since Mercy has promised these boxes to the elderly. If you don’t bring it back, Mercy has to make up the shortfall, so please be sure to return the box. God bless you for your continued support!

Strong Catholic Parents and Marriage

"The best thing parents can do for their children is to love each other." If you're a married parent, you have likely heard this before. Children feel more secure when they witness their parents' love for one another. If you're married, consider the following resources to rein- vigorate your relationship: * If you have 5 minutes, log onto foryourmar- riage.com for a daily marriage tip! * If you have 15 minutes, take a fun quiz to deter- mine you and your spouse's "love language" at http:// www.5lovelanguages.com/profile/ . * If you have 30 minutes, peruse your favorite book store, on-line book site, or library to find a book on a mar- riage topic that will inspire your Catholic union. * If you have 1 hour, seek what God has to say about marriage ... consult your bible, which likely has a topical index. Look for the word "marriage" or other key words that are important to your relationship, and study the related scriptures. * If you have 3 hours ... date night! (Or date day!) * If you have a weekend, consider attending a Cath- olic Marriage Encounter together. Local workshops are available. More information is available at http:// www.wwme.org/. * Regardless of the amount of time, pray together daily, perhaps before bed each night.

If you're not married, you can find encouragement along the way through programs, books and workshops availa- ble at http://www.divorcedcatholic.com/, or by con- necting with St. James' Annulment Support Ministry (Richard Nagengast 847-732-0970).

SPIRITUAL LIFE

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE November 23rd & 24th, 2013

As we end our liturgical year featuring the Gospel of Luke (cycle C), we hear the story of the good thief. At the end of his life, his admission of his sins and his proclamation of faith in Jesus as his King and Lord brings him the promise of life in The Kingdom. Their exchange highlights Luke’s penchant for the story of the people and the personal relationship that Jesus wants with each of us. What better way to end what could be called the New Year’s Eve of the Church!

This next “New Year” – with the beginning of Advent – we again hear the story of Jesus now through the eyes of Matthew (cycle A). He wrote years after the death of Jesus and wanted to pre- serve the sacred story and support those Christian Jews who were thrown out of the synagogues in their own towns. His effort was to show the connections between the old and new law as well as the fulfillment of prophecy. While this storyteller’s slant is different from the last, these stories both begin with the coming of the Messiah – the infant and vulnerable king - and culminate with the Sec- ond Coming of Jesus Christ recognized as King of the Universe! And isn’t this Second Coming what we all need as our focus? Are we preparing? Are we ready?

The Solemnity of Christ the King will be celebrated at Masses on the weekend of November 23rd and 24th. In observance of this Solemnity, we will be using incense at all of the Masses that weekend. The incense is hypoallergenic, so there will be a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction or coughing spell. The use of incense has a long history in our Catholic tradition, and is a profound sign in worship of prayers ascending to heaven. As we begin liturgy next weekend with the incense rising, may our prayers also rise in praise, honor, and obedience to CHRIST our KING.

Enter the Story. Open to the wonder, meaning, and mystery of God with us.
