ON THE COVER The icon of the Holy Trinity was selected for the Inclusion Awareness Day prayer card because it is a source of meditation and prayer on the inter-relation of the Trinity, hospitality and inclusion. In his book, Behold the Beauty of the Lord: Praying with Icons, Father Nouwen explains that icons do not reveal themselves at first site but only gradually, after patient, prayerful reflection. They draw us into closer communion with God. “I have memorized them as I have memorized the Our Father and the Hail Mary, and I pray with them wherever I go.” Nouwen describes the Trinity icon as an invitation to know God, not through our intellect, but through our hearts. He writes, “As we place ourselves in front of the icon in prayer, we come to experience a gentle invitation to participate in the intimate conversation that is taking place among the three divine angels and to join them around the table.” Nouwen observes that the icon beckons us to enter a house of love that “has no boundaries and embraces everyone who wants to dwell there.” The image of the three figures extends beyond the picture to include the viewer. The icon invites each of us to join the three figures to complete the image. We are all welcome to participate. We are all invited to take our place at the Table. We are all included. Cardinal Bernardin called the conference in response to a youth’s unfulfilled desire to serve as an altar boy. His parish leaders did not know how to include him because he used a walker and the altar was not ace, At the Eucharist at the historic conference parishioners of all abilities, including this young man, inaugurated their liturgical ministries. At Cardinal Bernardin’s request, Pathways.org created the Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors video and Idea Guide. In both publications practical ways congregations can involve worshippers with disabilities are presented. Before his death, Cardinal Bernardin also inaugurated Inclusion Awareness Day and launched the Open Hearts Newsletter with the assistance of Pathways.org. His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, gave his blessing to the Inclusion In Worship Ministry and Inclusion Awareness Day in 1997. In 1998 the Open Hearts Awards cash grants were funded by Pathways.org to assist parishes with access projects. To date 179 grants totaling over $122,000 have been granted to congregations across the U.S. In 2001 Cardinal George called for parish Inclusion Representatives to assist pastors with implementing the Inclusion in Worship ministry. Pathways.org is currently coordinating the efforts of over 175 Parish Inclusion Representatives. Inclusion Representatives, under the direction of their pastors, assist with access and inclusion efforts, coordinate Inclusion Awareness Day celebrations and submit nominations for Pathways.org Open 6 Hearts Awards grants. They attend one meeting per year to share their progress with other Inclusion Reps from their Vicariate. In 1999 Open Hearts, Minds and Doors: Embodying the Inclusive and Vulnerable Love of God by Reverend Robert Barron and Reverend Donald Senior was published with the National Federation of Priest’s Councils. In 2006 Pathways.org released Father Henri Nouwen’s complete keynote address “The Vulnerable Journey” on DVD and CD. From inception, the Inclusion in Worship ministry has been an interfaith movement. In 1998 Pathways.org partnered with the Chicago Rabbinical Council on the production of “Seth’s Bar Mitzvah”, a video telling the story of a young man’s inclusion in his synagogue as he prepares for his bar mitzvah. In 2007 the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago embraced the Inclusion In Worship ministry and joined Pathways.org in raising awareness to the need for access and inclusion with His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos’ inauguration of Inclusion Awareness Day in the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago. The activities of the Inclusion In Worship Ministry are guided by an interfaith Round Table of clergy and lay advisors from the Chicago area. In the Kingdom of Men: Love, Faith and Spirituality in von Trier's Breaking the Waves Abstract Rehabilitating Lars von Trier: The power of von Trier’s Breaking the Waves lies exactly in its irreducibility to a fixed interpretation. The director reconceptualizes the themes of spiritual devotion, faith and love in an unorthodox tale of the human struggle to find meaning and purpose in the world. The character of Bess allows us to penetrate into the innermost regions of the mind and affirms a humanistic approach to our relationship to ourselves and others. Von Trier places an individual’s actions as a form of development, a gesture towards transcendence that nonetheless exists within the mixture of banality and profundity that constitutes the world of man.     Clerical Abuse and Misconduct: Diocese of Springfield in Illinois by Gene Thomas Gomulka A former North American College (NAC) seminarian, Anthony Gorgia, filed an explosive lawsuit against Cardinal Timothy Dolan and NAC officials, including the NAC rector and Diocese of Springfield in Illinois priest, Father Peter Harman. Filled with graphic details, the lawsuit alleges that Gorgia was reprised against and coerced into leaving seminary after he received word from other NAC seminarians about inappropriate physical behavior toward vulnerable seminarians by the NAC vice-rector, Washington Archdiocese priest, Father Adam Park, which Gorgia himself witnessed. The lawsuit maintains that Gorgia was perceived as a threat to revealing the depth of the secret homosexual lifestyles of NAC officials, including Harman. As such, according to the lawsuit, Harman and Dolan used entirely false and easily disprovable claims as a pretext to extract Gorgia from the seminary without any justification. A priest with decades of seminary experience attested to the fact that no seminarian is discontinued just three months into the academic year after having just received the faculty’s unanimous vote to advance to that year, as Gorgia did, or having a stellar and exemplary record, as Gorgia had, on the basis of absurd reasons. If a seminarian is discontinued in the middle of an academic year, it is either because he has discerned he is not called to priesthood, or because he committed a serious offense. Insofar as neither of these conditions apply to Gorgia, the real motives of Harman, Dolan, and complicit clerics’ actions demand explanation. To understand why Dolan had such an intense interest in covering up misconduct at the expense of causing harm to Gorgia, one needs to consider the ordeal Father Ryszard Biernat suffered in the Diocese of Buffalo.

Sarah Louise Richards Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2016 School of Social and Political Sciences The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper This thesis is dedicated to Darius, Benson and Paskalina b Abstract This thesis engages critically with Durkheim¹s ideas of morality in an ethnographic exploration of the reasons young women in Manokwari (West Papua, Indonesia) choose to maintain chastity prior to marriage. Based on 27 months of fieldwork with an urban, Christian, coastal community, I examine their sexual conformity through the motivating force of three emotions – love, fear and hope. Young women wanted to delay their sexual debut so as to not hurt or disappoint their beloved mothers and because they feared being beaten by kin and suffering other forms of violence that sanctioned sexual transgressions. Since pregnancy is understood to lead to school drop-out and forced marriage, hope for a future characterised by secure employment and a harmonious marriage is also a rationale for chastity. These affective logics are explored in the context of cultural constructions of sexual morality at a time of rapid socio-economic change, immoral threats and revitalised enthusiasms for being Christian, and being Papuan. My finding that sentiment structures processes of young women’s moral reasoning and chaste practice supports Durkheim’s contention that ideals – moral standards that are above and beyond individuals – are emotionally based constructs of sacred power. This ethnography thus contributes to recent anthropological discussions that conceptualise morality and ethics as a realm where actors evaluate, select and enact a range of moral options in order to fashion themselves as ethical subjects.

    Governing New Guinea New Guinea Governing An oral history of Papuan administrators, 1950-1990 Governing For the first time, indigenous Papuan administrators share their experiences in governing their country with an inter- national public. They were the brokers of development. After graduating from the School for Indigenous Administrators New Guinea (OSIBA) they served in the Dutch administration until 1962. The period 1962-1969 stands out as turbulent and dangerous, Leontine Visser (Ed) and has in many cases curbed professional careers. The politi- cal and administrative transformations under the Indonesian governance of Irian Jaya/Papua are then recounted, as they remained in active service until retirement in the early 1990s. The book brings together 17 oral histories of the everyday life of Papuan civil servants, including their relationship with superiors and colleagues, the murder of a Dutch administrator, how they translated ‘development’ to the Papuan people, the organisation of the first democratic institutions, and the actual political and economic conditions leading up to the so-called Act of Free Choice. Finally, they share their experiences in the UNTEA and Indonesian government organisation. Leontine Visser is Professor of Development Anthropology at Wageningen University. Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party.

Murphy Cardinal Joseph Bernardin: May he rest in peace On Thursday Nov. 14, 1996, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, Archbishop of Chicago, died. He was a remarkable and gifted person of faith. On Thursday evening, I offered Mass for Cardinal Bernardin at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. At this liturgy, I noted in the homily that we gathered to mourn the death of a man whose life and death have impacted a nation and a world. We came together that night to ask God to welcome Cardinal Joseph Bernardin into the Lord’s presence for all eternity. ! In the Gospel proclaimed to us that evening, the Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come. Jesus responded by telling them not to look here or there, but to look at the present moment and to realize that the Kingdom of God is present among us now. Yet, if we are to recognize the Kingdom of God, we need people around us to preach the Good News that the Kingdom of God is present. ! Throughout the past several days, we have remembered a man for whom the preaching of the Kingdom of God was a passion. Cardinal Bernardin in living and dying, announced the message of the Gospel in powerful, persuasive ways. As a leader of the church in our country and world, Cardinal Bernardin called all people of good will to recognize the values of the Gospel message. He did this first by living the Gospel, then teaching by example.
