1997 SUNDANCE FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, ), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international.

PI testifi ed again to the power of imaginative fi lmmaking, and little grew up with very adult performances in THE OPPOSITE OF SEX and BUFFALO 66. Four fi lms (AMERICAN MOVIE, AMERICAN HOLLOW, AMERICAN PIMP, and AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY) wore their nationality on their title. And the year’s big winner, Tony Bui’s THREE SEASONS - which won the Grand Jury Prize, the Audience Award, and the Excellence in Cinematography Award - was shot entirely in and mostly in Vietnamese. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to Independent Vision went to . The digital domain was everywhere apparent with dot.com companies and streaming videos and the popularity of a digital video feature CHUCK AND BUCK. But the festival winners—GIRLFIGHT, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, and TWO FAMILY HOUSE—were small, conventional and very well written and acted dramas. And documentaries that called at- tention to real people in trouble were both admired and watched. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to Independent Vision went to Kevin Spacey.

The Festival not only established the Sundance Online Film Festival but also provided digital projection for many of the year’s digital fi lms, becoming the fi rst major Festival to offi cially recognize the rise of digital fi lmmaking. Many fi lmmakers re-engaged with such traditional Hollywood as the musical and the melodrama. The cult classic HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH offered a new twist on the traditional musical while DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS illustrated surf culture. The documentaries this year reclaimed non-fi ction fi lmmaking’s power to educate and inform, focusing both on the lives of children and inspirational historical fi gures. The Piper-Heidsieck Award, which goes to a fi lm artist who has made a signifi cant contribution to independent fi lm, was given to actress , honored for her work in such fi lms as THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS and SAFE.

In addition to sharing the same locale, the 2002 Film Festival demanded near Olym- pian stamina to cover the 113 feature fi lms, the panels at the House of Docs and Digital Center, the daily concerts at the Music Cafe, not to mention the virtual Festival streaming online. Along with the whirlwind of new fi lms was a gesture of solemnity with a special event of 9/11 fi lms. The fi lms that won this cinema Olympics displayed the changing world of independent fi lm as two DV features won major awards (TADPOLE and PERSONAL VELOCITY), as did a drama made for cable television (), and fi lms like SECRETARY succeeded in breaking new ground with truly original stories. In the end, jury member put the ten days in perspective with his quip, “I thought I had seen everything, but I will leave here astonished.”

But like many other fi lms that year, what PRIMER lacked in funds it made up for in creativity. Ondi Timoner’s DIG!, which won the Documentary Grand Prize, also demonstrated artistic perseverance in its seven-year journey to follow to two rock bands. , whose fi lmmaker was awarded the Documentary Directing Award, exempli- fi ed an ingenious premise: the fi lmmaker underwent the grueling culinary achievement of eating only McDonald’s fast food for 30 days. While the Festival had its share of quirky characters, including and Henry Darger, the subject of the documentary IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL, many of the fi lms – from GARDEN STATE to EDGE OF AMERICA, from MARIA FULL OF GRACE to LET THE CHURCH SAY AMEN – told simple, insightful stories while documentaries like captured the hearts and minds of audiences at the Festival and beyond.
