STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND GLOBAL COMPETITION INDIVIDUAL PAPER THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY AND ITS ACQUISITION STRATEGY: PIXAR, MARVEL & LUCASFILM Li Chi Ching Jane Strategic Management and Global Competition, Fall 2016 December 1, 2016 Abstract In this paper, I will analyze the rationale behind Disney’s acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm and the subsequent impacts they have on Disney as a whole. Disney has always been relying on its strategic model “The Ripple Effect” for sustainable growth—through creation of a film asset, value can be infused into an array of its related entertainment assets. And a popular film acts like a wave maker in creating ripples that go down to all of Disney’s businesses—success of films are central to Disney’s overall performance. Yet, the absence of successful films from Disney starting from the late 1990s stopped the Disney model from working, resulting in a decline in profits in various business segments within Disney. In light of this problem, Disney chose the path of acquisitions— Pixar was acquired in 2006, while Marvel and Lucasfilm were acquired in 2009 and 2012 respectively. All three acquisitions have one central goal—to find Disney’s way back to the wave makers, and hence make the Disney model work again. The announcement by Disney that it would buy its partner Pixar at $7.4 billion in 2006 once shook the world—many were either having doubts on how such an acquisition would turn out or considering the valuation as too high. Most acquisitions, particularly in media, are value-destroying as opposed to value-creating. -

Netflix What College Students Tell Us Regarding Their Attitudes Towards Netflix: A Focus Group Report Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism University of Southern California Methods and Introduction Netflix is an online instant streaming service that also provides a mail DVD service. Founded in 1997 by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings, the company has grown as one of the largest global entertainment distribution services. Netflix now partners with many consumer electronics companies to offer streaming services on various Internet-connected devices, such as tablets and smartphones, and has recently introduced their own exclusive content. The objective of the Netflix focus group was to find Netflix’s overall reputation and performance from the perspective of college students. The focus group method was chosen in order to better gauge how college-aged customers felt about Netflix. The open-ended exploration of focus group research allowed us to explore student’s thoughts about Netflix through both positive and negative perspectives. Students from the University of Southern California (USC) were invited to discuss their opinions, comments and suggestions regarding the service. The focus group offered an up-close look at the participants’ experiences, attitudes, behaviors and language in relation to Netflix. Convenience sampling was used to gain participants. This allowed us to conduct our focus group in a timely matter for our clients. The casual setting of the focus group helped urge the participants to be completely honest and forthcoming with their responses. The focus group method gave access to a large number of participants at one time. One focus group with nine USC students was conducted. -

Rodríguez Abstract— Electricity tariffs convey information on internal system operation to the actors involved. Electricity pricing is, then, of major importance both in liberalised and regulated systems. Most electricity consumers interact with the industry only through the price they pay for the service. Consequently, good tariff design reflects industry regulation as a whole and is the instrument used to provide consumers with the right signals. The objective of this study is to define the theoretical principles that regulation should pursue in electric distribution tariff design and introduce the reader to the most relevant practical approaches that have been proposed or implemented. Although distribution costs are usually the largest part of the access tariff (or use of system charge), there is not a universally accepted methodology for distribution pricing. The earliest attempts at cost allocation conformed what is now known as the accounting approach, based on business accounting. In recent years, the proposals have focused on two approaches: the application of long-term marginal (or incremental) costs and the cost-causality principle. Although the former aims to achieve a better economic signal, because of the difficulties surrounding its implementation, the most usual solution applied in practice draws more heavily from the causality principle. In this paper we discuss several defensive and offensive strategies that managers can you for market success. Defensive strategies are divided into pre-entry and post-entry stretegies. Marketing managers should attempt to discourage would be entrants before entry has occurred. They can achieve this goal by engaging in pre-entry startegies. After entry is occurred it is more difficult to persuade new entrants to exit the industry. For this reason, marketing managers should use different defensive strategies for defending their positions in pre-entry and post-entry situations. Introduction Competition forces companies to constantly engage in offensive and defensive marketing strategies. Rivalry occurs because one or more competitors either feels the pressure or sees an opportunity to enter an industry or to improve its position within an industry. In most cases, competitive moves by one firm have noticeable effects on its competitors and, thus, may invite retaliation or efforts to counter the move (Porter 1980). Companies respond to competitor challenges by counterattacking with increasing advertising expenditures, cutting prices, increasing innovation, and introducing new products, or even accommodating the entrant by doing nothing or decreasing the level of marketing effort (Karakaya and Yannopoulos, 2011; Scherer, 1980). -

Son talent d’acteur était tellement intense, sensible, drôle et puissant, que cela a été magique de travailler avec lui. Je suis très fier et heureux d’avoir pu le connaître. Camille Delamarre 4 ar ce court texte, je souhaite rendre un dernier hommage Pà Paul Walker, qui nous a brusquement quitté le 30 novembre dernier dans des conditions tragiques alors qu’il œuvrait pour venir en aide aux victimes du typhon Haiyan qui venait de frapper les Philippines. La nouvelle de sa disparition a évidemment été un grand choc pour moi, et je compatis sincèrement à la peine de ses proches. J’ai rencontré Paul l’été dernier sur le tournage de Brick Mansions. Nous nous sommes très vite entendus, malgré la barrière de la langue, et le film doit beaucoup à cette complicité spontanée qui s’est immédiatement établie entre nous. -
