Page 2 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11, 2012 Congratulations George and Mary On Sunday, November 4th, George and Mary Saffa received the Christifidelis Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago at a ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral at which Cardinal Francis George presided. The award was given to them by our Vicar, Bishop Frank Kane, who is pictured with them here. This award is bestowed upon a Catholic lay person or couple who has demonstrated in parish life the personal and minis- terial renewal called for by the Papal Exhortation, “Christifidelis Laici” calling lay men and women to the vocation of responsibility for the Church’s life springing from the mission of their baptism. Those receiving the award have mani- fested an understanding of the teachings of the Church and have lived a life formed in the Catholic Spiritual Tradition. They have used their talents to deepen the life of the Church in the parish or have served in an extraordinary way the ministry of the parish. The Saffas have been members of the parish since 1977 and they live on McAlpin Avenue. They have been very ac- tive in our Christmas Basket Project, which helps to give Christmas gifts to those at our sharing parish, St. Sylvester, who otherwise might go without. George has been a lector for many years and has been a part or our Holy Name liturgical celebrations. Other parish members who have received the Christifidelis Award are: Tony & Trish Riggio Dolores Coughlin Fran & Ed Molloy Betty Blank Eileen Griffin Bob Brunetti Rick & Lorraine Klinkenberg Jim Sweany We are grateful for the ministry and devotion to St. Mary of the Woods Faith Community these men and women have given. A Little More About Father Aiden Recently I received a little more information from Father Aiden O’Boyle. He is the eldest of three sons and his family lived in the rural west of Ireland five miles west of Ballina, County Mayo. His father was a farmer and his mother was a nurse. After high school, Father Aiden attended St. Patrick College in Maynooth and was ordained in 1992. He went to graduate school in Rome, and returned to Ireland for a number of assignments. In January, 2009, he came to Chicago for graduate studies at Loyola University and resided at St. Benedict’s on Irving Park Road. He returned to where he is now, at St. Tiernan Church in Crossmolina, County Mayo, in July, 2011. As I mentioned last week, Father Aiden plans to join us after January 7, 2013. When I know his specific date of arri- val, I will let you know as well. Peace, Father Pat Page 3 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11, 2012 Veterans day, 2012 A chaplain, who happened to be assigned to the Pentagon, told of an incident that happened right after Flight 77 hit the Pentagon on 9/11. A daycare facility inside the Pentagon had many children, including infants who were in heavy cribs. The daycare supervisor, looking at all the children they needed to evacuate, was in a panic over what they could do. There were many children, mostly toddlers, as well as the in- fants that would need to be taken out with the cribs. There was no time to try to bundle them into carriers and strollers. Just then a young Marine came running into the center and asked what they needed. After hearing what the center director was trying to do, he ran back out into the hallway and disap- peared. The director thought, "Well, here we are, on our own." Two minutes later, that Marine returned with 40 other Ma- rines in tow. Each of them grabbed a crib with a child, and the rest started gathering up toddlers. The director and her staff then helped them take all the chil- dren out of the center and down toward the park near the Poto- mac and the Pentagon. Once they got about 3/4 of a mile out- side the building, the Marines stopped in the park, and then did a fabulous thing—they formed a circle with the cribs, which were quite sturdy and heavy. Inside this circle of cribs, they put the toddlers, to keep them from wandering off. Outside this circle were the 40 Marines, forming a perimeter around the children and waiting for instructions. There they remained until the parents could be notified and come get their children. It was an incredible story of our men there. Could we expect any less of them? Its the Military, not the politicians that ensure our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Its the Military who salute the flag, who serve beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag. If you care to offer a small token of recognition and appreciation for the military, pray for our men and women who have served and are currently serving our country, and pray for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Psalm 55 may be an especially apt prayer for [persons] who are dealing with abusive situations. With all of you we pray these verses: Listen, God, to my prayer; do not hide from my pleading; hear me and give answer.
