We keep all who are affected in any way by the COVID-19 pandemic in our prayers and we are grateful for the generous and compassionate hearts of all those in our medical community who sacrifice daily to care for us. On Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Bishop John Quinn announced the suspension of all public Masses here in the Diocese of Winona-Rochester through Friday, May 15, 2020. Find his message here: https://www.dowr.org/ alerts.html. The Emergency Declaration for our county and the resulting message from Bishop Quinn speak to our need to be responsible for each other. This calls for severe measures to reduce/limit the consequences of COVID-19. We have an opportunity to learn new ways to share life and accompany one another and we begin by acknowledging the fact that reality is telling us to stop and listen. We are not spared the painful circumstances that people have endured through our salvation history; we are living a challenging crisis and the Lord Jesus proposes Himself. We live this time trusting in the presence of Christ. We have not been abandoned. Please be assured of my prayer for you every day as I recall all of you in celebrating the Eucharist privately. Be open to the way Christ wants to speak to us and how Christ desires to teach you and me in the desert time of discovering the depth of His face here and now. I am a proud graduate of both Our Lady of Award, I was both surprised and humbled to receive such a the Snows School in Chicago and St. Laurence High noble recognition from Mundelein Seminary. I also thought School in Oak Lawn. Immediately after high school, I to myself, “This award is given at the Golf Outing Dinner decided to enroll at Niles College Seminary and spent and I don’t golf!” The award, however, is given in memory four wonderful years there. Many of my good friends of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin who ordained me a priest and in life were members of my Niles class. I did a lot of appointed me to be the Rector- “growing up” at Niles. In 1982, I entered Mundelein President of St. Joseph College Seminary, the same year that Cardinal Bernardin Seminary. I am honored to accept arrived in Chicago. In 1985, I was ordained a deacon this award because it treasures in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at the memory of a great Chicago Mundelein. Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of Faith (Skokie, IL: Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, 2011) (DVD – 10 discs) $149.95. This video series and accompanying book by Robert Barron, priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, prolific author, director of Word on Fire Ministries, which has a wide-ranging internet presence, and recently- appointed rector of Chicago’s Mundelein Seminary, where he has taught for many years, is an impressive example of what has been termed “the new evangelization,” an effort to present the Catholic vision of life in contemporary terms and through contemporary means of communication. In ten episodes, ranging in length from about 40 minutes to just under an hour, Fr. Barron guides his viewers across space and time to highlight what he considers to be the central dimensions of Catholic faith. The ten chapters of the book correspond closely in content and in language to the respective video segments, expanding somewhat on the scripts and incor- porating numerous photographs (mainly in black and white but including an 8-page color section as well) of artwork and of sites found in the film. Videos and text complement one another, but each stands quite well on its own, sharing the engaging voice of Fr. Barron as speaker and writer. He begins with a focus on the person of Jesus and on the Incarnation as “the great principle of Catholicism” (1), then moves on in the second section to Jesus’ teaching, with particular focus on the Beatitudes, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, and the Judgment scene of Matthew 25.
