Paris ANNUAL COLLECTION FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH (WORLD MISSION SUNDAY) This is to notify you that the collection for the Propagation of the Faith will be taken up at the Masses the weekend of October 22-23, 2011. A bit of history for this collection is provided for your information. The collection was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and the first collection for worldwide Mission Sunday took place in October, 1927. This day is celebrated in all the local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal solidarity so Christians the world over will recognize their common responsibility with regard to the evangelization of the world (from USCCB). Please send the collection payable to: “Diocese of Marquette: Propagation of the Faith Collection” at the diocesan office no later than Monday, November 14, 2011. RCIA CANDIDATES/MARITAL STATUS This is just a reminder to Pastors, Pastoral Coordinators and the RCIA team of the importance of determining the marriage situation of the candidate and the candidate’s spouse which may require an annulment before he/she may enter the Church at Easter. If the candidate or the candidate’s current spouse has been married previously, an investigation into these marriages must be made immediately at the onset of the RCIA in the fall. Annulment applications coming to the Marriage Tribunal after the first of the year cannot be completed by Easter. A questionnaire that may be helpful to you may be found by clicking on Addendum #1 to this Communicator. An order form is included as Addendum #6. Based on comments received at and in the days following the conference it was a wonderfully affirming and enriching event for many women in attendance that can now be re-lived, or perhaps experienced for the first time! PASTORAL PLANNING IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OFFICIAL CATHOLIC DIRECTORY FORMS Some concerns have been raised about the forms that parishes/missions, Catholic schools, etc. which needed to be filled out in order to be listed in the 2012 edition of the Official Catholic Directory. It seems that many places received their forms only a day or two before the listed deadline of September 28th. A call was placed to the Directory’s publisher in regard to this concern as it is the publisher – not the Pastoral Office – that mails the forms each year. According to the publisher’s outgoing voice mail message there is a grace period on the return of those forms, which seems to indicate that this may be a problem happening throughout the country and not just our diocese. Many thanks to those who have returned their forms already and please know that the deadline for form submission in our diocese has been extended to Friday, October 21st for those who have not yet been able to do so. Also, please note that it is vitally important to complete and return these forms, as maintenance of non-profit status of individual parishes/missions, schools, etc. is dependent upon being listed in the directory each year! If you have any questions or if you need a new copy of your form please contact Colin Jenkins at extension 178 or [email protected]. Diocesan Communicator No. 10/2011 Page 5 of 9 COMMUNICATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT Loreene Zeno Koskey “BERNARDIN” VIDEO DOCUMENTARY TO AIR ON WNMU-TV The award-winning documentary, “Bernardin,” will air on WNMU-TV, Public TV 13, on Monday, November 14, at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT, on the 15th anniversary of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s death. • Springfield Diocese
Clerical Abuse and Misconduct: Diocese of Springfield in Illinois by Gene Thomas Gomulka A former North American College (NAC) seminarian, Anthony Gorgia, filed an explosive lawsuit against Cardinal Timothy Dolan and NAC officials, including the NAC rector and Diocese of Springfield in Illinois priest, Father Peter Harman. Filled with graphic details, the lawsuit alleges that Gorgia was reprised against and coerced into leaving seminary after he received word from other NAC seminarians about inappropriate physical behavior toward vulnerable seminarians by the NAC vice-rector, Washington Archdiocese priest, Father Adam Park, which Gorgia himself witnessed. The lawsuit maintains that Gorgia was perceived as a threat to revealing the depth of the secret homosexual lifestyles of NAC officials, including Harman. As such, according to the lawsuit, Harman and Dolan used entirely false and easily disprovable claims as a pretext to extract Gorgia from the seminary without any justification. A priest with decades of seminary experience attested to the fact that no seminarian is discontinued just three months into the academic year after having just received the faculty’s unanimous vote to advance to that year, as Gorgia did, or having a stellar and exemplary record, as Gorgia had, on the basis of absurd reasons. If a seminarian is discontinued in the middle of an academic year, it is either because he has discerned he is not called to priesthood, or because he committed a serious offense. Insofar as neither of these conditions apply to Gorgia, the real motives of Harman, Dolan, and complicit clerics’ actions demand explanation. To understand why Dolan had such an intense interest in covering up misconduct at the expense of causing harm to Gorgia, one needs to consider the ordeal Father Ryszard Biernat suffered in the Diocese of Buffalo.

  • The Catholic Bishops and the Rise of Evangelical Catholics
religions Article The Catholic Bishops and the Rise of Evangelical Catholics Patricia Miller Received: 27 October 2015; Accepted: 22 December 2015; Published: 6 January 2016 Academic Editor: Timothy A. Byrnes Senior Correspondent, Religion Dispatches; [email protected]; Tel.: +1-703-519-8379 Abstract: White Catholics are increasingly trending toward the Republican Party, both as voters and candidates. Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Keywords: U.S. Catholic bishops; abortion; Republican; Democratic; voting 1. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party.

  • Progress 112196
The Progress November 21, 1996 In Joy and Hope by! Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy Cardinal Joseph Bernardin: May he rest in peace On Thursday Nov. 14, 1996, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, Archbishop of Chicago, died. He was a remarkable and gifted person of faith. On Thursday evening, I offered Mass for Cardinal Bernardin at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. At this liturgy, I noted in the homily that we gathered to mourn the death of a man whose life and death have impacted a nation and a world. We came together that night to ask God to welcome Cardinal Joseph Bernardin into the Lord’s presence for all eternity. ! In the Gospel proclaimed to us that evening, the Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come. Jesus responded by telling them not to look here or there, but to look at the present moment and to realize that the Kingdom of God is present among us now. Yet, if we are to recognize the Kingdom of God, we need people around us to preach the Good News that the Kingdom of God is present. ! Throughout the past several days, we have remembered a man for whom the preaching of the Kingdom of God was a passion. Cardinal Bernardin in living and dying, announced the message of the Gospel in powerful, persuasive ways. As a leader of the church in our country and world, Cardinal Bernardin called all people of good will to recognize the values of the Gospel message. He did this first by living the Gospel, then teaching by example.

  • THE VORTEX Moving the Needle September 2, 2014
THE VORTEX Moving the Needle September 2, 2014 Hello everyone and welcome to The Vortex, where lies and falsehoods are trapped and exposed. I’m Michael Voris. It is the duty of every Catholic these days who considers himself faithful to try and move the needle—to become a counter-revolutionary INSIDE the Church. If you are the sort of Catholic who has been asleep in the pews at any point during the past fifty years—as everyone who works here at ChurchMilitant.TV once was themselves —don’t feel bad or weirded out. You are like the vast majority of Catholics who have been lulled into a sense of complacency and indifference by leaders in the Church. Among many of these leaders, the older ones were the revolutionaries, or the disciples of the revolutionaries, and they have taken control of many aspects of Church life. That was a generation or so ago—stretching back to the 1970s to 1990s. Their names are well known: men like Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco, Cardinal John Dearden of Detroit, Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee (an openly active homosexual), Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany, New York, Bishop Matthew Clark of Rochester, New York, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington, DC. These were the marquee name destroyers of Catholic tradition, but they had MANY other allies in the US episcopate and lower clergy in those halcyon years. In diocese after diocese, they tore the Church apart, introducing innovation after innovation meant to dislodge the Church from its traditional moorings.

TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME . RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY Our heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School named as a 2018 Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence Award Winner by the United States Department of Education Page Two TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME . RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY October 7, 2018 Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School is proud to be recognized for a second time as a NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL 2008 and 2018 In 2008, when Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School first became eligible to apply for Blue Ribbon status, we were honored and proud to be named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. It is with great pride that we share the news that Cardinal Bernardin School — your parish school — received their second recognition in September 2018, as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. To receive the award once is a distinguished achievement. To receive the designation twice is an honor very few schools will ever achieve. This award, which recognizes our students’ achievement through their hard work and dedication, would not have been possible without the exemplary efforts of our exceptional teaching and support staff, the engagement of our dedicated and supportive parents, and of course, the long-standing commitment of the pastors of our four sponsoring parishes. Additionally and importantly, CJB school wants to thank the parish staff and the parishioner families of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr for their prayers, support and encouragement over the years.
