OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR Reverend Benedetto J.J. Paris

ANNUAL COLLECTION FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH (WORLD MISSION SUNDAY) This is to notify you that the collection for the Propagation of the Faith will be taken up at the Masses the weekend of October 22-23, 2011. A bit of history for this collection is provided for your information. The collection was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and the first collection for worldwide Mission Sunday took place in October, 1927. This day is celebrated in all the local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal so Christians the world over will recognize their common responsibility with regard to the evangelization of the world (from USCCB). Please send the collection payable to: “Diocese of Marquette: Propagation of the Faith Collection” at the diocesan office no later than Monday, November 14, 2011.

RCIA CANDIDATES/MARITAL STATUS This is just a reminder to Pastors, Pastoral Coordinators and the RCIA team of the importance of determining the marriage situation of the candidate and the candidate’s spouse which may require an annulment before he/she may enter the Church at Easter. If the candidate or the candidate’s current spouse has been married previously, an investigation into these marriages must be made immediately at the onset of the RCIA in the fall. Annulment applications coming to the Marriage Tribunal after the first of the year cannot be completed by Easter. A questionnaire that may be helpful to you may be found by clicking on Addendum #1 to this Communicator.

MASS STIPENDS FOR RETIRED PRIESTS If you have any extra Mass stipends, could you please send them to the Diocese so that we can distribute them to the retired priests? Your cooperation is appreciated.

MODERATOR OF THE CURIA AND MINISTRY PERSONNEL SERVICES Reverend Ronald T. Browne

PERMISSION FOR MIXED MARRIAGE All priests serving in the Diocese of Marquette who have been granted faculties by the of Marquette have the faculty to grant permission for a marriage between a Catholic and a baptized person of another communion provided that the conditions of canon 1125 are fulfilled. Even though a priest has the faculty to

Diocesan Communicator No. 10/2011 Page 3 of 9 grant the permission required for a mixed marriage without consulting with the Chancellor, you still need to properly fill-out the Diocese of Marquette Dispensation/Permission Form and send it to the Chancellor. The completed Dispensation/Permission Forms must be forwarded to the Chancellor because dioceses are required to keep accurate records of all mixed marriages. Please send the Dispensation/Permission Forms to: Fr. Ben Paris, 1004 Harbor Hills Drive, Marquette, MI 49855. This form can be found in Addendum #2.

DIOCESAN STOLES If you know of any extra white/beige diocesan priest stoles that are not being used, please contact Fr. Ron Browne, 906-227-9107. Any extra stoles returned will be dry-cleaned and given to visiting priests serving in the Diocese of Marquette for a few years. Thus, the visiting priests would have a diocesan stole for Diocesan Masses and would return the stole when they complete their service to our diocese.

PASTORAL PLANNING

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OFFICIAL CATHOLIC DIRECTORY FORMS Some concerns have been raised about the forms that parishes/missions, Catholic schools, etc. which needed to be filled out in order to be listed in the 2012 edition of the Official Catholic Directory. It seems that many places received their forms only a day or two before the listed deadline of September 28th. A call was placed to the Directory’s publisher in regard to this concern as it is the publisher – not the Pastoral Office – that mails the forms each year. According to the publisher’s outgoing voice mail message there is a grace period on the return of those forms, which seems to indicate that this may be a problem happening throughout the country and not just our diocese.

Many thanks to those who have returned their forms already and please know that the deadline for form submission in our diocese has been extended to Friday, October 21st for those who have not yet been able to do so. Also, please note that it is vitally important to complete and return these forms, as maintenance of non-profit status of individual parishes/missions, schools, etc. is dependent upon being listed in the directory each year!

If you have any questions or if you need a new copy of your form please contact Colin Jenkins at extension 178 or [email protected].

PARISH BUILDING AND MEMORIAL FUNDS – REQUEST FOR SAMPLE GUIDELINES Many of our parishes and missions hold and administer “Building Funds” and “Memorial Funds.” Terri Gadzinski, Diocesan Director of Development, has had a request from a parish finance council member for samples of written parish guidelines, procedures, or policies for administering building and memorial funds. Specifically, statements describing the purposes of the fund and how and what the monies are disbursed for. If any parish or mission has such documentation that they are willing to share with others, please forward to [email protected]. Samples can then be made available to those who are interested, whether you are creating a new “Building Fund” or “Memorial Fund,” or interested in reviewing/updating your current guidelines for such funds.
