  • HISTORY of the NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE for GIRL SCOUTS and CAMP FIRE by Virginia Reed
Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting.

  • Pope Francis Proposes New Work of Mercy Catholic.Net
Pope Francis Proposes New Work of Mercy Catholic.net (ZENIT, Vatican City, September 2, 2016).- Pope Francis has proposed a new work of mercy: care of creation. According to the Pope’s message “Show Mercy to Our Common Home,” released today on the occasion of the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, he states: “Obviously ‘human life itself and everything it embraces’ includes care for our common home. So let me propose a complement to the two traditional sets of seven: may the works of mercy also include care for our common home.” As a spiritual work of mercy, the Holy Father continued, “care for our common home calls for a ‘grateful contemplation of God’s world’ (Laudato Si’, 214) which “allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us” (ibid., 85). As a corporal work of mercy, care for our common home requires “simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness” and “makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world” (ibid., 230-31).” During a press conference in the Holy See Press Office this morning to present the message, Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, spoke on its significance. (Cardinal Turkson was named yesterday to lead the newly created Dicastery for Integral Human Development, which will encompass what is now four pontifical councils.) Cardinal Turkson was speaking along with Greg Burke, director of the Holy See Press Office; Bishop Brian Farrell, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity; and Terrence Ward, author of ‘The Guardian of Mercy’ in which one learns of Caravaggio’s masterpiece on the works of mercy located in the southern Italian city of Naples.

  • Charting the Roles of Women in the Catholic Church
FutureChurch Charting the roles of women in the Catholic Church Current breakdown of male/female leadership in Vatican dicasteries Pope Francis has called for “a more incisive presence for women” in the Catholic Church. At the most recent Consistory of cardinals on February 12 and 13, 2015, Fr. Federico Lombardi reported that the cardinals expressed the hope of “an increasingly active role” for women. Although Pope Francis stated the door is closed on the question of ordination for women to the priesthood, he has been emphatic in his call for a stronger presence of women elsewhere. He recently appointed Sr. Mary Melone, the first women to date, to head a Pontifical University; Sr. Luzia Premoli, the first women to be appointed as a member of the Congregation on Evangelizat ion of Peoples, and has stated that women should take up positions of greater leadership within the Vatican. So how many women are in positions of leadership within the Curia? How many assert real influence? While it is difficult to accurately measure the level of influence women exercise, the chart below has been generated to further that discussion by showing the current roles women play now in Vatican congregations, pontifical councils, and other commissions, committees and offices. Secretariats, Congregations, and Pontifical Councils There are two secretariats, nine congregations and twelve pontifical councils. Below is a chart indicating the number of Vatican officials broken out in terms of male/female roles from undersecretary and above. RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY Our heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School named as a 2018 Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence Award Winner by the United States Department of Education Page Two TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME . RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY October 7, 2018 Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School is proud to be recognized for a second time as a NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL 2008 and 2018 In 2008, when Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School first became eligible to apply for Blue Ribbon status, we were honored and proud to be named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. It is with great pride that we share the news that Cardinal Bernardin School — your parish school — received their second recognition in September 2018, as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. To receive the award once is a distinguished achievement. To receive the designation twice is an honor very few schools will ever achieve. This award, which recognizes our students’ achievement through their hard work and dedication, would not have been possible without the exemplary efforts of our exceptional teaching and support staff, the engagement of our dedicated and supportive parents, and of course, the long-standing commitment of the pastors of our four sponsoring parishes. Additionally and importantly, CJB school wants to thank the parish staff and the parishioner families of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr for their prayers, support and encouragement over the years.

SW • Rochester, MN 55902 • w w w. s j . o r g CO-CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 11 4th Avenue SW • Rochester, MN 55902 Dear Friends in Christ: Welcome to the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. We keep all who are affected in any way by the COVID-19 pandemic in our prayers and we are grateful for the generous and compassionate hearts of all those in our medical community who sacrifice daily to care for us. On Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Bishop John Quinn announced the suspension of all public Masses here in the Diocese of Winona-Rochester through Friday, May 15, 2020. Find his message here: https://www.dowr.org/ alerts.html. The Emergency Declaration for our county and the resulting message from Bishop Quinn speak to our need to be responsible for each other. This calls for severe measures to reduce/limit the consequences of COVID-19. We have an opportunity to learn new ways to share life and accompany one another and we begin by acknowledging the fact that reality is telling us to stop and listen. We are not spared the painful circumstances that people have endured through our salvation history; we are living a challenging crisis and the Lord Jesus proposes Himself. We live this time trusting in the presence of Christ. We have not been abandoned. Please be assured of my prayer for you every day as I recall all of you in celebrating the Eucharist privately.
