The 23rd Sunday In Ordinary Time

Jesus said, “Which of you wishing to construct a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation, he will find himself unable to finish the work.”

Luke 14: 25 –33

Fr. Bob’s Briefs This Sunday, Jesus tells us the parable of a man building a tower. In the Gospel of Luke, we hear Jesus say, “which of you wishing to construct a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation, he will find himself unable to finish the work.” How are to make sense of Jesus’ words? What does our Lord mean by this parable? In order to under- stand the words of Jesus, we need to put this parable in its context (what comes before this passage and what follows it). At the beginning of this passage, we hear Jesus talking about discipleship and being His disciple. Likewise, at the end of the passage, we hear Jesus conclude His teaching by repeating the theme of discipleship and being His disciple. Thus, the parable of the man building a tower is a teaching on discipleship. How can this parable of building a tower be seen as a teaching on discipleship? Remember, the word disciple comes from the Latin word discipulus, which means pupil, student, or follower. A disciple is student who listens to his/her teacher. As a disciple of Jesus, we should listen to Christ our teacher. Yet, very often in life, we do not listen to the voice of Jesus our teacher. We listen to the voices of other people. This is what Jesus makes clear in today’s parable. After the man had laid his foundation and began to build, his onlookers laughed at him. The man building the tower is a symbol for the Christian man/woman. After we have laid our foundation in Christ (receiving Baptism and the other Sacraments and have learned the Catholic faith), we build on that foundation by trying to live a good Catholic life, listening to the teachings of Jesus, our Teacher, but others laugh at us, and they want us to stop building the tower of faith. Others want us to stop being a faithful Catholic and disciple of Jesus. Writing on this Gospel, St. Gregory teaches, “when occupied in good works, unless we watch carefully against evil, we find those our mockers who are persuading us [to stop] and to evil.” When we try to be a disciple of Jesus and try to live a good Catholic life, what happens to us? We are laughed at by other people, even other people who claim to be Catholic too. Why do you go to Mass on Sunday? Why don’t you work on Sunday? Why do you pray the Rosary or Litanies? Do you really believe the Real Presence in the Eucharist? Do you really believe in the Immaculate Conception, Virgin birth, and Assumption of Mary? Do you really believe in Purgatory? Why do you pray to the saints? Why don’t you eat meat on Fridays, what’s wrong with you? Some recent polls show a disparity between American Catholics and Catholic belief on a variety of other beliefs as well. A Public Religion Research Institute poll (August 2015) reveals that, despite the Church’s longstanding, ardent teaching that abor- tion is the killing of innocent unborn human life, 51 percent of American Catholics compared to 53 percent of non-Catholic Americans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. In “Values and Beliefs” (a May 2015 Gallup Poll), 86 percent of Catholics said birth control was “morally acceptable” compared 90 percent of non-Catholic respondents, and 70 percent of Catho- lics approved of same sex relationships versus 58 percent of non Catholics. Many people will mock us as we try to build faithfully our tower of discipleship to Jesus, but because we encounter op- position and ridicule, we stop. Fr. Barron, now Bishop Robert Barron, taught us at Mun- delein Seminary that the key thing for Catholics is that they should engage with the culture unapologetically. All too often, Catholics have apologized for their Catholic beliefs. Instead of changing the culture formed by fullness and splendor of the Cath- olic faith, Catholics for the past fifty years have allowed general, social culture to change them. Bishop Barron says, “St. Pope John Paul II was a very good example of this unapologetic but very genial Catholicism, not scolding and belligerent, but he was trying to show how attractive Catholicism was on its own terms.” St. Pope John Paul II is an excellent example of a person living in the world who can live and speak the beauty of the Catholic faith, despite opposition from others. You may have noticed that the two large, tall trees in between the school and convent are gone. We had to cut them down last week for everyone’s safety. Last week, during one of our recent storms, the right half of the northern tree (still living with leaves) split off the main trunk of the tree and fell to the ground. The upper left portion of that same tree was touching the school building, which is a dangerous and damaging to the building. So, we removed that tree. A few feet to the south of that tree were another tree, which was dead and dried. The tree was killed a few years ago due to the ash borer beetle. Not only was this tree an eyesore now, but because it was dead and decaying, it was therefore weakened, and it too could fall during any future wind or thun- derstorm. We did not want the trees to fall on anyone and hurt any people or property. So, for the safety of everyone, especially because people walk underneath those trees every day, we decided to cut them down. However, the cost of removing these two trees was not cheap. This is not Wisconsin, where tree removal is economical and reasonable. The removal of these two trees cost us over $3,300 from our building fund, which is over 2 months of collected savings. Este domingo, Jesús nos dice la parábola de un hombre edificando una torre. En el Evangelio de Lucas, oímos decir a Je- sús: "¿Quién de vosotros que deseen construir una torre, no se sienta primero a calcular el costo, para ver si hay suficientes fondos para su realización? De lo contrario, después del establecimiento de las bases, se encontrará incapaz de terminar el trabajo. "¿Cuál es el sentido de las palabras de Jesús? ¿Qué quiere decir el Señor con esta parábola? Con el fin de comprender las palabras de Jesús, tenemos que poner esta parábola en su contexto (lo que viene antes de este pasaje y lo que le sigue). A principios de este pasaje, oímos a Jesús hablando de discipulado y ser sus discípulos. Del mis- mo modo, al final del pasillo, oímos a Jesús concluir su enseñanza mediante la repetición del tema del discipulado y ser sus discípulos. Por lo tanto, la parábola del hombre que edifica una torre, es una enseñanza sobre el discipulado.

Cómo puede esta parábola de la construcción de una torre ser vista como una enseñanza sobre el discipulado? Recuerde, la palabra discípulo viene de la palabra latina discipulus, lo que significa alumno, estudiante o seguidor. Un discípulo es un estudiante que escucha a su maestro@. Como discípulos de Jesús, debemos escuchar a Cristo, nuestro maestro. Sin embar- go, muy a menudo en la vida, no escuchamos la voz de Jesús, nuestro maestro, solo escuchamos las voces de otras personas. Esto es lo que Jesús deja claro en la parábola de hoy. Después de que el hombre había establecido su fundación y comenzó a construir, sus espectadores se rieron de él. El hombre de la construcción de la torre es un símbolo para los cristianos hombre/mujer. Después de que hemos establecido nuestra fundación en Cristo (de recibir el bautismo y los demás sacramentos y aprendido la fe católica), construimos sobre esa base, tratando de vivir una buena vida católica, escuchando las enseñanzas de Jesús, nuestro Maestro, pero otros se ríen en nosotros y ellos quieren que dejemos la construcción de la torre, la fe. Algunas encuestas recientes muestran una disparidad entre los católicos de Esta- dos Unidos y la creencia católica en una variedad de otras creencias también. No queríamos que los árbo- les cayeran sobre cualquier persona y que hicieran daño a las personas o los bienes. Por lo tanto, para la seguridad de todos, sobre todo porque la gente camina por debajo de esos árboles todos los días, decidimos cortarlos. Sin embargo, el costo y la eliminación de estos dos árboles no fué ba- rato. Esto no es Wisconsin, donde la remoción de árboles es económica y razonable. La eliminación de estos dos árboles nos costó de $ 3,300 de nuestro fondo de construcción, que es más de 2 meses del ahorro captado. Tengan un fin de semana del Día del Trabajo bendecido. W dzisiejszym fragmencie z Ewangelii wg św. Łukasza (14:28-29), Jezus opowiada nam o mężczyźnie budującym wieżę: „Bo któż z was, chcąc zbudować wieżę, nie usiądzie wpierw i nie oblicza wydatków, czy ma na wykończenie? Inaczej, gdyby założył fundament, a nie zdołałby wykończyć, wszyscy, patrząc na to, zaczęliby drwić z niego”. Nie da się zrozumieć tych słów, nie znając ich kontekstu (tego, co jest przed nimi oraz po nich). Na początku tego fragmentu, Pan mówi o tym, co znaczy być Jego uczniem. Ten sam temat powraca też pod koniec dzisiejszego czytania. Przypowieść o budowniczym wieży dotyczy zatem podążania za Chrystusem. Czego ta przypowieść może nas nauczyć o wierności Jezusowi? Uczeń słucha swego nauczyciela. Podobnie i my, będąc uczniami Chrystusa, musimy słuchać naszego Nauczyciela. Jednak w codziennym życiu często tego nie robimy. Słuchamy głosów otoczenia. Właśnie to Jezus chce nam dzisiaj uświadomić. Budowniczy ułożył fundament, na którym zaczął wznosić wieżę; ludzie zaczęli go wyśmiewać. Budowniczy wieży jest symbolem każdego chrześcijanina. Po ułożeniu fundamentu naszego życia w Chrystusie (czyli przyjęciu Chrztu oraz innych sakramentów naszej wiary), budujemy wieżę naszego życia: słuchamy nauk Jezusa i próbujemy wieść życie godne katolików. Inni wszakże szydzą z nas, nie chcąc, abyśmy ukończyli tę budowlę. Nie chcą oni, abyśmy byli wiernymi katolikami i uczniami Jezusa. W swoim komentarzu do tego fragmentu, św. Grzegorz stwierdza, że będąc zaangażowanymi w dobre uczynki, musimy jednocześnie mieć się na baczności przed złem. Zawsze bowiem znajdą się szydercy, którzy będą nakłaniać nas do złego. Co się dzieje, kiedy próbujemy być dobrymi katolikami? Narażamy się na kpiny ze strony innych, którzy również próbują żyć po katolicku. Po co w niedzielę chodzisz na Mszę, zamiast normalnie pracować? Dlaczego odmawiasz litanie czy Różaniec? Czy naprawdę wierzysz w to, iż Chrystus jest Prawdziwie Obecny w Eucharystii? Czy wierzysz w Niepokalane Poczęcie, Dziewictwo oraz Wniebowzięcie Najświętszej Maryi Panny? Czy wierzysz w istnienie Czyśćca? Czemu modlisz się do świętych? Czemu nie jesz mięsa w piątek? Niedawno opublikowana ankieta ukazuje dysproporcje i niezgodę pomiędzy katolikami w USA a osobami innych wyznań, jeśli chodzi o różne zasady naszej wiary. W sierpniu 2015 roku ujawniono, iż (na przekór wieloletniej nauce Kościoła, zgodnie z którą aborcja jest morderstwem nienarodzonych) 51% amerykańskich katolików oraz 53% niewierzących uważa, że w większości przypadków aborcja powinna być legalna. Według sondy przeprowadzonej w maju 2015, 86% katolików i 90% niewierzących uważa kontrolę urodzeń za coś „moralnie dopuszczalnego”. Z kolei 70% katolików i 58% niewierzących popiera związki osób tej samej płci. Jan Paweł II był wzorem człowieka, który, żyjąc w świecie, równocześnie żył wiarą chrześcijańską i ukazywał całe jej piękno, pomimo sprzeciwu ze strony innych. Być może zauważyliście brak dwóch wielkich drzew pomiędzy szkołą a kościołem. Dla bezpieczeństwa naszych parafian musieliśmy je ściąć. W zeszłym tygodniu, podczas burzy, połowa jednego z drzew oderwała się i spadła na ziemię. To, co pozostało z drzewa niebezpiecznie przechylało się w stronę szkoły. Usunęliśmy je. Niedaleko tamtego drzewa znajdowało się drugie, zniszczone kilka lat temu przez opiętka jesionowego. Przez to, owe drzewo nie tylko psuło wygląd okolicy, ale także mogło w każdej chwili się zawalić. Nie chcieliśmy, aby drzewa w takim stanie uszkodziły budynki lub kogoś zabiły. Jako że ludzie codziennie pod tymi drzewami przechodzili, dla ich bezpieczeństwa zdecydowaliśmy się je usunąć. Było to wszakże kosztowne – Illinois to niestety nie Wisconsin. Tam usuwanie drzew odbywa się w sposób rozsądny i opłacalny. Usunięcie tych dwóch u nas kosztowało około $3,300.
