Fr. Al’s Ramblings

Thank you for the questions which came as a result of my first article on indulgences! I knew it would be a popular subject or at least one which aroused some interest. The concern of the plenary indulgence seems to have raised the most curiosity; probably because it is the one, according to one reader, that immediately gets me into heaven. Well, let’s be sure we truly understand that notion. I’ll also explain the partial indulgence in order to help you understand more fully the differences.

The person becomes as if just baptized and would immediately enter into heaven if he/she died in that instant AND, as I mentioned in last Sunday’s article, the full remission of the temporal punishment due to sacramental forgiveness of sins (this forgiveness includes the Apostolic Pardon granted at the time of death). Then and only then it is by the virtue of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints that the plenary indulgence is granted; simply put, it is an act of God that removes the temporal punishment and purifies our soul.

A partial indulgence means that a portion of the temporal punishment due to forgiven sin is settled. Partial indulgences are received either by doing some act to which a partial indulgence is attached (praying a partially indulgenced prayer), or by the incomplete fulfillment of the conditions attached to a plenary indulgence.

In either case the indulgence depends, naturally, on our openness to God's grace.

Next article I’ll “dig” into the two kinds of punishment attached to sin, eternal and temporal.

Thanks again for the questions! Keep‘em coming and I’ll do my best to answer them or at least give you some references which you can research. Fr. Al

Livestream Mass Announcement We are happy to announce that the church’s video and audio equipment have been upgraded for livestreaming Mass online.

With the new equipment, we will be livestreaming from our YouTube page instead of from Facebook.

You can find us a couple of different ways: 1. Go to www.stanthony.com and click on the link at the top of the screen that reads “Click here to sign up for weekend Masses or to view the Daily Live Streamed Mass.” 2. Go to YouTube.com and search for St. Anthony Church Effingham. A list of options will appear. Click on the St. Anthony option that has our logo as the image. 3. On our Facebook page, we will share a link to the YouTube livestream which can be found on our home page. Once you are on our YouTube page, we recommend clicking on the Subscribe button to follow us. By doing that, the next time you return to YouTube, you can click on “Subscriptions” (usually on the left side of your screen) to find us quicker.

We will continue to livestream Mass daily at 8:30 am. For Wednesdays, we continue to celebrate Mass at St. Mary’s in Shumway and will post a link to that livestream on Facebook.

If you miss the livestream, YouTube will store the recording for later viewing. It may take up to an hour for YouTube to convert the livestream to a video and may not appear in our video library right away.

The crowd restrictions could likely remain in effect for a length of time, which prompted us to improve the online viewing experience. You will find that the audio and video quality have greatly improved. Please continue to post your prayers and comments while watching Mass. It is a great way for our parish community to remain united.

We express our gratitude for a generous donation by one of our parish families for covering the cost of these upgrades.

Blessings to all of you! We continue to pray for the health and safety of all of our parishioners and look forward to the day when we can celebrate the Eucharist together without restrictions. The Effingham Knights of Columbus will host the “OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE SILVER ROSE PRAYER SERVICE” on September 9, 2020, 7:30pm at the Effingham Event Center. Both banquet rooms (Christopher and Columbus) will be used and set up to provide social distancing. A face covering is required and if you have a fever, experiencing any COVID 19 symptoms, in isolation due to COVID 19 or are concerned with participating in a group, please participate by viewing the Prayer Service via Facebook Live on the Effingham Knights of Columbus 665 Facebook page.

The Silver Rose Program began in 1960, when a live rose, blessed by a bishop in Ontario traveled to New York, then to Texas and on to Mexico where it ended its pilgrimage at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey on Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Silver Rose Program is now a journey of nine Silver Roses beginning each year in March and ending on Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Each Silver Rose travels a unique route throughout North America beginning in Canada and ending in Mexico, except one ends in Washington, D.C., and another ends at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT, where the Knights of Columbus was founded.

The Knights of Columbus honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express our unity as Brother Knights and their families, but also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is the Blessed Mother that we turn to in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses.”

Please spread the word and join the Knights to pray for a civilization of love and culture of life in our own country and throughout the world.
