Tim Fairman Dear Friends, A little over a year ago, Bishop Alberto Rojas was named our new Vicar-Bishop in Vicariate I, succeeding our retired Vicar, Bishop George Rassas. Bishop Rojas had previously been Vicar of Vicariate III since his ordination as bishop in 2011. He is 54 years of age. Bishop Rojas was born in Mexico, studied at Mundelein Seminary and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1997. He taught at the seminary for eight years and was a pastor for one year before Cardinal George ordained him an Auxiliary Bishop on August 10, 2011. On December 2, we received word that Pope Francis had named Bishop Rojas to be coadjutor Bishop with Bishop Gerald Barnes in the Diocese of San Bernardino, California. A coadjutor bishop works with the current bishop and eventually succeeds the current bishop when he retires or steps down from his post. While we don’t know for sure yet exactly when Bishop Rojas will begin his new assignment, it appears that he will be leaving our Vicariate at the beginning of February. There is no word yet on who will succeed Bishop Rojas here in Vicariate I. The Diocese of San Bernardino, California was created in 1978 and is already the sixth largest diocese in the U.S., with over 1.8 million Catholics, 75% of whom are Hispanic. Bishop Rojas will be the diocese’s third bishop in its 41 year history. Despite its size, there are no auxiliary bishops to serve with Bishop Rojas when he begins his ministry there. While I am very happy for Bishop Rojas, it will be sad to see him leave our vicariate. Bishop Rojas is a man of deep faith who exudes kindness and humility in everything he does. I was looking forward to him leading us for many years to come, but his loss is San Bernardino’s gain. He will make an excellent bishop of that diocese. We have been very fortunate in this vicariate to have so many good vicar bishops to guide us: Bishops Vlazny, Goedert, Kicanas, Listecki, Rassas and now Rojas have been excellent leaders who are a credit to the episcopacy. Let’s offer our prayers to Bishop Rojas as he prepares to lead the Diocese of San Bernardino, and all of our bishops. We all know how difficult it is to be a bishop in this day and age. Let’s also pray that the Holy Spirit will provide us with a new vicar who will follow in the footsteps of the men before him and be a great leader for Vicariate I. In other news, I have been asked by Bishop Rojas to be one of his six deans in Vicariate I. The role of the

  • Bishop Barnes of San Bernardino Retires; Coadjutor Bishop Rojas Succeeds Him
Bishop Barnes of San Bernardino retires; Coadjutor Bishop Rojas succeeds him WASHINGTON (CNS) (Updated) — Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Gerald R. Barnes of San Bernardino, California, and Coadjutor Bishop Alberto Rojas immediately succeeds him. Bishop Barnes has headed the diocese since 1996. In June, he turned 75, the age at which canon law requires bishops to turn their resignation into the pope. Bishop Rojas had been an auxiliary bishop of the Chicago Archdiocese since 2011 when Pope Francis named him as coadjutor for San Bernardino Dec. 3, 2019. The Mexican-born bishop relocated to California’s Inland Empire diocese, as it’s known, in February. Bishop Barnes’ resignation was announced in Washington Dec. 28 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Alberto Rojas. CNS In a Dec. 28 statement, Bishop Rojas said he would “like to build on the momentum that is clearly present” in the diocese and would not make any “big changes right away.” “There is no doubt, when looking at the events of this past year, that I am coming to lead the diocese at a very challenging time,” he said, but he added that he has already witnessed the strong and committed faith of the diocesan Catholics. He said in his years of ministry, in the seminary and as a priest and bishop in Chicago, he encountered many new challenges but he “always trusted in God’s plan for me to serve his church, and that he will give me all that I need to do his work.” Bishop Rojas was born Jan.

It is with great pride that we share the news that Cardinal Bernardin School — your parish school — received their second recognition in September 2018, as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. To receive the award once is a distinguished achievement. To receive the designation twice is an honor very few schools will ever achieve. This award, which recognizes our students’ achievement through their hard work and dedication, would not have been possible without the exemplary efforts of our exceptional teaching and support staff, the engagement of our dedicated and supportive parents, and of course, the long-standing commitment of the pastors of our four sponsoring parishes. Additionally and importantly, CJB school wants to thank the parish staff and the parishioner families of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr for their prayers, support and encouragement over the years.

We keep all who are affected in any way by the COVID-19 pandemic in our prayers and we are grateful for the generous and compassionate hearts of all those in our medical community who sacrifice daily to care for us. On Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Bishop John Quinn announced the suspension of all public Masses here in the Diocese of Winona-Rochester through Friday, May 15, 2020. Find his message here: https://www.dowr.org/ alerts.html. The Emergency Declaration for our county and the resulting message from Bishop Quinn speak to our need to be responsible for each other. This calls for severe measures to reduce/limit the consequences of COVID-19. We have an opportunity to learn new ways to share life and accompany one another and we begin by acknowledging the fact that reality is telling us to stop and listen. We are not spared the painful circumstances that people have endured through our salvation history; we are living a challenging crisis and the Lord Jesus proposes Himself. We live this time trusting in the presence of Christ. We have not been abandoned. Please be assured of my prayer for you every day as I recall all of you in celebrating the Eucharist privately.
