A message from Mark . . .

The last couple of weeks has seen has play in the against a very spirited Kapiti side and away on grass (first time for many a moon) against one the best defences in the league, Tawa. Cup football is always exciting and where dreams are made, this game marked the start of our dream, which we managed to keep alive thanks to an early goal from Josh. The remainder of the game was a midfield battle with very few chances created. Overall in my view we did enough to progress, with the added positives of not picking up any injuries or yellow cards. So into the hat we go for the next round, fingers crossed for a good draw, 1. At home (YES), 2. Not a Central League team (YES), 3. Not Petone, as we play them on the Saturday before (YES), 4. Anyone Else (YES) – We drew Tawa at home on Queens Birthday Monday. Long live the dream! Back to our bread and butter, the league, Tawa away on grass. This game was to have many challenges, as I said we had not played on grass for nearly a year and it certainly showed, our passing wasn’t as slick as it had been and combined with Tawa’s very high line, it proved to be very scrappy, stop start affair. Tawa did manage to score with one of their few raids into our half via a deflection that looped over Logan’s head, game on. Tawa’s high line and our inability to break through caused for a few more grey hairs (yeah I know, is it possible) and we went to the break 1 down.

A message from Mark . . . The second half got underway with us still in the changing rooms, not literary but mentally and Tawa should have doubled their lead. Luckily their striker had his boots on the wrong feet and put it wide. It seemed to kick start us into action in where we dominated possession and territory but again to our frustrations no joy and more offside flags than Sheldon has on the Big Bang Theory. We introduced Sam P with about 25 to play and with his first touch drew us level after some good work from Jeremy. We pressed hard to find a winner but with no success and had to settle for a draw. Today marks the start of 3 consecutive home games in which will be pivotal to our season, starting with welcoming Jamie, the staff and the Wests players to Maidstone Park. Wests have made a solid start to their season and I’m sure want to push on with their aspirations. Most of their squad form part of the Ole academy who have a good possession based style of play. This will certainly suit our style between us and I’m sure it will produce a cracking game to watch. This game also marks the half way point in the league, where has that time gone! Thanks to all the supporters who ventured out to Redwood Park and other venues to support the team, your support is certainly appreciated. Hope you enjoy the game, look forward to catching up with you in the clubhouse to discuss the finer matters of the game, don’t forget yell for the orange! Foz

McGlinchey- we can match the bigger nations

On the back of some of his finest displays in an All Whites shirt, Michael McGlinchey is in a confident frame of mind and says there is a real belief in the squad that they can foot it with the best sides in the world.

Anthony Hudson’s men will have to do just that at next month’s FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, where they will come up against the hosts, Mexico and Portugal – all countries ranked far higher than the All Whites current standing of 112th but ones McGlinchey is relishing the prospect of taking on.

His bullish approach stems largely from the All Whites’ noteworthy tour of the USA at the back end of last year – which brought a 2-1 loss to Mexico and 1-1 draw against the States – as well as an unbeaten start to OFC Stage 3 qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup against New Caledonia and Fiji.

The games in America were especially memorable for McGlinchey, who caught the eye with a pair of characteristically composed showings as the All Whites further underlined their potential to make an impact on the world stage.

“I think they were probably my best performances in an All Whites jersey and I just want to carry on from that now,” he says.

“That was the moment when we believed we could match these bigger nations. It’s given us the confidence to go to this tournament believing we can cause upsets.”

McGlinchey- we can match the bigger nations

The midfield schemer is currently one of 12 domestic-based players fighting for spots in the Confederations Cup squad during a pre-tour training camp in and is enjoying being in the All Whites environment once more.

“It’s good to get back in and see all the faces again. I think everyone’s been looking forward to this for a long time now so it’s just good to get in and get the training boots on,” he says.

After enduring an injury-interrupted A-League season with the Wellington Phoenix, McGlinchey is relieved to now be free of any niggles and is surely one of the few figures who can be confident of being on the plane to Russia next month.

“I feel fully fit,” the 30-year-old says.

“I managed to get a few games in by the end of the season and had three or four weeks there just to rest and keep my training levels up. The five days we have here is a massive advantage to the boys to get some training minutes and every session counts.”

Before their thoughts can turn to the Confederations Cup though, McGlinchey and co first face several pre-tournament games, including international friendlies against Northern Ireland and Belarus. The All Whites will meet the former in Belfast on June 2 and are set to come up against a side that includes English Premier League talent in the form of Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Chris Brunt, Craig Cathcart and Steven Davis.

McGlinchey- we can match the bigger nations

“Northern Ireland are a physical team, they’ve got a lot of experience and are good when the ball’s in the air. We’ll be working on them this week and when we catch up with the rest of the boys we’ll have a solid game plan to try and beat them.”

While the pre-Confederations Cup games are worthy occasions in their own right, McGlinchey says the importance of the tournament itself cannot be overstated.

“It means everything, we obviously want to get to the World Cup and this is the start of it. We’ve been saying it the whole time but we want to make history and that starts from now.”

NZ to host OFC U-19 Women’s Champs . . .

Six teams will compete in the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship which is being held at Ngahue Reserve in Auckland from 11-24 July and hosted by the Oceania Football Confederation.

Defending champions New Zealand will be joined by Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Samoa as they each bid for the 2017 title and a place in the FIFA U- 20 Women’s World Cup France 2018.

The format of the competition is a round robin league, with three games scheduled for each match day. Teams will play each other once over five match days – with at least two rest days between each match day – and the team with the most points after Match Day 5 will directly qualify to represent Oceania at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018, kicking off in August next year.

OFC Competitions Director Chris Kemp said it is an exciting competition which OFC is looking forward to hosting at the future OFC Home of Football. “We had some mixed results at the previous edition of the then OFC U-20 Women’s Championship two years ago and since then a lot of development has gone into the women’s game,” he said.

“Both New Zealand and Papua New Guinea performed outstandingly at the U-20 Women’s World Cup last year which is likely to have inspired a few of these competing nations, and I know the preparations for many of them are well underway.”

The order of opponents for each competing team will be determined at the Official Draw for the 2017 OFC U-19 Women’s Championship at the OFC Headquarters on Wednesday 31 May 2017.
