elcome to Napier City Rovers who play our Liquid IT Men’s First Team and WWellington United Diamonds who play our Powerex Women’s First Team, as well as all of the supporters that have come to back their teams. Our Men’s First Team’s game against was abandoned last weekend due to a clash causing the Wharfies keeper, Gabe Cooper, to be knocked out and rushed to hospital. He was discharged and feeling positive, and will be having follow-up tests. Our thoughts go out to Gabe and his family. The game will be replayed later in the season. The lads are showing a great deal of team spirit as they are fighting hard for points every week, showing the intensity needed to succeed in this very competitive Central League. With plenty of support for them this week with a larger-than-usual Old Timers’ Day crowd, we hope for some points today – COYB. Our Women’s First Team had a 4-1 win over Seatoun last week, having going 1-0 behind after two minutes. The team have gained seven points in the last four games, starting to get the results they deserve as they continue to play well. Our Men’s Reserve Team had a Petone FC Programme valuable win against Victoria University editor/designer – two weeks ago and a 1-1 draw with Iain MacIntyre (MacIntyre Wharfies last week. A big weekend in the Euros as well, as we will have learned two of the semifinalists by the time of reading. I’m sure there are a few tired folk out there with these early-morning starts watching the awesome football on display. Our Talent Development Programme (TDP) teams are doing well in developing their football skills, being very ably run by our Talent Centre director Ryan Edwards. Ryan brings a great deal of knowledge, with an excellent ability to develop and deliver the junior to youth to senior progression pathway for our proud club. A big thank you to Rymans for providing the food today for our Old Timers’ and Sponsors’ Appreciation Day. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS. I can’t finish without showing appreciation to our sponsors. These much-appreciated financial supporters are also named a matchday sponsor for one game per year, in which their business and the players proudly wearing their shirts will be profiled in the following pages of this programme. Hospitality will be provided to the sponsor at that game and, additionally, framed pictures will feature in the club stairwell throughout the season. Any businesses who may be interested in this opportunity – or any club members who may have potential contacts – please advise club chairman Matt Bliss [email protected]. 23 Settler Q&A – Sue Pickering

ormer Women’s First Team player and continuing hard-working club Fmember, Sue Pickering, is the focus of this edition’s Settler Q&A. Do you recall when you first started playing football and any memories from that game/time? 1973 – I was 15 (girls weren’t allowed to play before 15 back then). I don’t recall the first game as such but it was memorable because we were coached by brother Les and I played alongside two sisters-in-law – Pam Pickering and Vickie Pickering, so very much a family affair. How long were you in senior football before your First Team debut, what was your age and how did that go? Since it all began with just the one women’s team, technically it was the First Team at the time, so as above. Our home ground was the No 3 pitch, so we had to check for golf balls before kick-off – they were notorious for rolling ankles! If not covered off already, when did you join Petone and why? I first started going to Memorial Park about 60 years ago when eldest brother Phil was a junior, so all of my weekends were spent at football – home away from home!

Treasured family

24 What were your main position(s) and what attracted you to those? Left fullback mainly and occasionally sweeper or right back. I found it easier to read a game from the back. Career highlights? Team trip to Australia 1978 arranged by coach Russell Jackson – we were the first women’s team to play “internationally” even though they were only friendlies. Kelly Cup Winners Medal in 1993. Any notable disappointments? Nothing springs to mind. Team-mates you’ve particularly respected/enjoyed? Utmost respect for Maureen Jacobson and Wendi Henderson – top-class players to learn from. A team-mate particularly enjoyed would be our keeper Donna Revell – always first to congratulate the opposition for scoring a nice goal! When did you retire from the First Team, what brought that about and how long did you play down the grades thereafter? Having spent a couple of seasons at top level, I retired myself to Third Team, along with a few other stalwart team-mates, to help mentor the up-and-coming female club players. Eventually, by the time I’d reached my 40s, a group of us “oldies” got a team together and played lower grades (no Masters League) and surprised ourselves by winning our competition very comfortably. We weren’t very fit, but we had the skills to one-touch around the pitch, with the college- aged opposition wearing themselves out chasing the ball. I have very fond

25 Potted Sue Pickering Stats/Achievements having joined Petone FC in 1972 as a junior player, the following year – as a 15-year-old – Sue became a member of the club’s first Women’s Team and is understood to have remained in the side through until 1980 women’s secretary 1977 (on Women’s Committee in other years) Management Committee member 1998-2003 recording secretary 2004-2009 bar manager 2019 (and probably other years) other valued club involvement, including – managing a junior grade team and running the tuckshop and kitchen Women’s Sportsperson of the Year 1998 Club Sportsperson of the Year 2000 and 2008 Women’s Fourth Team Player of the Year 1998 Information kindly supplied by Ray Bell and via previous documentation compiled by John Bradbury

memories of our social get-togethers after the games. I retired at about 46, then got a call up a few years later to help with a player shortage in the First Team. Surprisingly, I survived the 90 minutes on the field, but that was enough for me to realise that the boots needed to be hung up permanently, so I officially retired at 50 years old.

Did you continue playing in other teams (are you still) and what other roles have you had in the club over the years? No longer playing, but I was on women’s committees, managed a junior grade team, ran the tuckshop, have been on the Management Committee, ran the kitchen and am now working on the bar – if it needs doing and I can help, I will.

Have other family members played for/had any involvement in the club? [Ed – as referenced, Sue is a proud member of the club’s “Pickering Dynasty”].

Any thoughts on the game overall – ie, things you are or aren’t liking today? It’s great to see women’s football growing and gaining the respect it deserves, and our junior coaches are doing an awesome job bringing both our female and male juniors through the grades in preparation for senior football.

26 Lastly, any final thoughts on what Petone FC has meant to you and your family? Wow, this gets deep! Our mum was on the committee when she passed away in 1975, so Petone FC became part of our family bond and has continued to be so for three generations. It’s very much a family-orientated club and it’s great watching the young ones grow through the grades to become senior players.

27 Junior Club Update

t’s another strong year for Girls Only football at Petone FC, with 86 registered Iplayers. We are fortunate to have coaches who have the knowledge and skills to train our players and to make the game of football such fun. Make no mistake, our Girls Only teams enjoy playing and scoring goals – but they also value the camaraderie and love playing with their friends. Our new U8 Team is getting “stuck into the game brilliantly”, with permanent smiles, according to their coach Ryan Trenberth. They run around at every training for an hour and then “collapse for a lie down” at the end. On game days, the players have an “infectious enthusiasm”, even when it’s cold and wet. A massive thanks to our Petone Powerex First Team player Caelin Patterson for assisting on game days. The girls are loving her involvement. Another group of keen players make up our two 10th Grade Teams. The younger Wanderers Team, coached by Ben Cumming and Sreekanth Konda, moved up a grade this year and have come along “in leaps and bounds” since the first game of the season – after everyone (coaches and management included) had to make sense of the rules and formations for the new grade. The girls quickly adapted and developed their skills, learning how to play together as a team and scoring plenty of goals. They are a tight-knit squad who show enthusiasm and enjoyment every week.

28 From the first game of the season the U10 Settlers also showed a willingness to learn – playing across any position and clearly enjoying their football. The team is made up of some new players, and some who’ve played mixed football for a few years. Coach Mike McMorran says some early wins saw the team move up within the grade and they are now facing some challenging competition. Our 12th Grade Settlers have only had one loss this season – continuing to improve with some great technical skills and effort being shown on the field each week. New players have settled in well and the team is already looking forward to moving to full-sized fields next year. Good luck to Richard Arkinstall and the team at the Taupo McCarthy Tournament in October! The Mighty Blueberries are our younger 12th Grade Wanderers Team who have taken the big step up this year to nine-a-side. They have taken the new rules in their stride and are improving every week. Coach Mark Allen says “the girls are always smiling and the awesome whanau support (including from siblings) is an enormous help”. In U14s, we started the season worried we wouldn’t be able to field two teams. By April we were regrettably having to turn away late-registering players, ending up with two teams of around 32 players. Both teams, coached by Ryan Trenberth and Chris Martin/Sharon Stewart, have developed a good camaraderie.

29 One parent mentioned recently that Friday night trainings are the highlight of the week for his daughter. A standout game for the U14 Settlers was having ten different scorers against the Onslow Chartwells. Coaching has focused on moving positions so the players can develop an understanding of what’s required on different parts of the field. It has been a challenge moving from grass to turf each week and learning just how differently the ball moves in different conditions. Some nice, attractive passing has culminated in more than 35 goals in the first round and just a few losses. The U14 Wanderers are working well as a team, according to co-coach Sharon Stewart. “Their passing has improved, defence has got stronger and their attacking tactics more refined,” she says. “We still have to work on our finishing and getting that ball into the back of opposition’s net.” We wish all of our players, coaches, managers and whanau the very best for the remainder of the season. Increasing football skills, enjoying the game, staying in the sport and making friends – these are the things that make Girls Only football a true success for Petone FC. etone FC’s centenary, in 1998, passed by completely unnoticed. From the P1950s until 2010, the club believed it was founded in 1889 when Petone Wanderers was formed and played in the first interclub match in Wellington. When conducting research in 2010, in preparation for creating the new honours boards, the club contacted noted football historian Barry Smith to check several things. Barry advised that the Petone Association Football Club was actually founded in 1898 and had no connection to the previous Petone Wanderers. Subsequent research confirmed Barry’s view. In a letter to the club in 1956, HHA Renai stated that he was instrumental in starting the club in 1897. This had added to the confusion at the time, as some also believed then that the club was formed in 1891. Newspaper reports from 1899 referred to the club’s first AGM being held in February of that year and in several subsequent years the meetings were referred to by sequential number, having started at one in 1899. Further research determined that there were no players or administrators in common between Petone Wanderers or its successor United, which disbanded after the 1895 season, and Petone Association Football Club. In an article he produced in 2011, Life Member John Bradbury noted all of the pieces of evidence and concluded that the club had indeed been formed in 1898, and that it had no connection to the earlier Petone Wanderers. In 1989 the club had celebrated what it thought was its centenary and produced a book to mark the occasion. For another 20 years, the club had no reason to question its foundation date. When the actual centenary occurred in 1998, nobody knew about it! Article kindly provided by Ray Bell
