The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

Last time we were at Hutt Park we started our match against Petone seven points behind league leaders Napier and there was a real concern we could be drifting off the pace. Having a week off because of to rest and recharge the long line of injuries was welcomed and what followed was two wins —against Petone and PN Marist which has helped “right the ship”.

The bonus last weekend was that none of the five teams around us in the league had wins and we’ve jumped up to fourth spot just 3 points of the top. What that highlights is how close Central League is this season with almost all teams capable of upsetting the form book. Last week’s Miramar result is testament to that. With the recruitment of a host of high profile Team Wellington players they've had a dream run in the league and Cup and been in ominous form. But the Nix youth hit their straps and scored an emphatic victory. Everyone is acutely aware that Miramar don’t have two off days in a row so expect an epic encounter today.

It’s been a great season so far for the Stop Out club and as you’ll see in the following pages our 2nds, 3rds and 4ths are all very much in the mix for promotion spots. And last week was one of our greatest ever achievements with all three Masters teams scoring wins! Now that hasn’t happened since JT last ventured over half way!

With the midweek invitation to play the Wellington Phoenix it has reinforced our place as one of the Premier clubs in the region. Tuesday night at Fraser was a wonderful occasion and a great experience for Stop Out players, management, ball kids and spectators. We competed admirably and created many a chance in a competitive 5-1 win for the Nix.

In this week’s programme we also break down the statistics for Stop Out talisman Steve Gulley’s 150th appearance for the club. A great achievement from one of our finest!

Enjoy the football today and our Stop Out hospitality!

The 3rds climb back on top! Marty Dutton’s Cap 5 side took another step towards promotion Having a week off when the whole of Capital 5 was last weekend. Here is Marty’s cancelled due to supposed weather related ground “tell it straight” match report. closures (despite near perfect playing conditions) was frustrating, so the thirds were looking forward to meeting local rivals Naenae at their place.

Having comprehensively beaten them 4-1 in the first round, we went into our second round game confident of gaining three more points. Although we had some rain during the week, we were greeted by a beautiful clear sunny day at Naenae Park. We were scheduled to play on Naenae 1, but were shocked to see the condition of the pitch.

In the first half Naenae, playing with the slope of the pitch, appeared to deal well with the slippery conditions and unusual pitch dimensions, and played some good attacking football. We looked a bit nervous at the back, but good going forward as usual. Our first goal came after 15 minutes when ex-Naenae striker Jake Phillips slid a perfect ball through to Kieran Page who calmly slotted home past the keeper. Incidentally, no Capital Football referee was assigned to this game, and a special mention should be made to the young Naenae player who reffed admirably in the first half.

We went into the half time break 1-0 up but with quite a bit of work still to do. In the second half, we had the slope Jake Phillips of the pitch with us, and we were able to dominate possession and pass the ball more freely on the very cut up surface. A refereeing substitute in the second half brought a much more one sided view to the game, meaning that we had two goals disallowed, two clear penalties not awarded and some unusual calls made against us. One particularly bad call gave Naenae a free kick just outside our box, which was struck really well and going into the bottom left hand corner of our goal. Remarkably, man of the match Andy Crisp dived to his left and put a strong hand to the ball to send it off course to safety. Despite the refereeing, we still managed to score another two goals (a second to Pagey, and the final one to Matt Henderson) which sealed victory for us.

. 1st team match reports

Stop Out 5 v Petone 1 – Hutt Park

We welcomed Petone FC to Hutt

Park in what we knew would be a toughly fought contest. As we head into the latter part of the season we knew Petone would be desperate for points to get them closer to Palmerston

North Marist and to avoid relegation.

With a few injuries in the squad we called up Devon Debut and start for Devon Batchelor into centre midfield for his first Central League appearance for the club on the back of some great

performances for our top of the table reserve team.

We began the game strongly and took the lead early on with a first goal of the season to Luke Grindlay. We soon doubled the lead through Luis Corrales and were looking very comfortable in the game with dominance in midfield. Just before the break the returning Fisum Aden pulled a

goal back to give Petone some belief that they would get back into the game.

The next goal was always going to be important and it was Josh McEvoy Grindlay who easily out muscled his defender to restore

the two goal advantage early in the second half. After that we were comfortable and cruised out to a 5-1 victory with further goals to Micky Malivuk and Martin Packer.

We were also able to give another debut to young Josh McEvoy, both he and Devon impressed on their first appearances for the Central League team and will certainly

be players to watch out for in the future.

Stop Out 3 v PN Marist 2—Memorial Park, Palmerston North . A very soft Memorial Park welcomed us for our game with Palmerston North Marist.

Like our previous game with Petone we were expecting a tough battle against a team fighting to stay in the Central League.

We started brilliantly moving the ball well

and causing all sorts of problems for the

Marist defence. Micky Malivuk was simply too strong turning and holding off four defenders to slot home the opening goal 2nd goal in over 90 matches for Brandon after a fine solo run. On twelve minutes it was two with Brandon Tai scoring from a corner, with twenty minutes gone Luis Corrales timed his run perfectly to be through one on one and after having his initial effort saved he slammed it home on the second attempt to leave us 3-0 up and cruising.

Unfortunately, from there we stopped playing for the rest of the first half. The pitch was making for heavy legs especially in the wide areas but we did just stop moving the ball with the same speed and accuracy as earlier in the half and when we tried to carry it on our own we turned over possession and made the game harder than it needed to be. We conceded 5 minutes from half time which gave Marist something to build on for the second half.

The second half was better than the end of the first. We moved the ball better and controlled the game. With ten minutes to go Marist pulled another goal back, the striker was clearly offside but no flag resulted. It meant that we had to dig in to hold onto

the result and man of the match Jason Tipping was key to us keeping hold of all the points.

Full time and although we weren’t happy with the nature of the result we will take the three points and build towards a massive week where we play the Wellington Phoenix in a friendly on Tuesday and host Miramar at Hutt Park on Saturday

2nds march on! Stop Out 1 v Waikanae 0, Hutt Park 2.

As we prepared for what could be another big game in our title push we knew we would have to train well. Waikanae is the only team to have taken points off us the entire season so we knew it was going to be a tough encounter but wanted to get all three points at home.

From the kick off possession ebbed and flowed until we gained ascendency and retained possession for long spells. Waikanae were physically dominating some challenges so midfield trio of Rhys Glover (22), Daniel de Gans (19) and Griff Edward (17) moved the ball with a faster tempo, allowing us to take control. With opportunities for both sides, it remained 0-0 at HT.

The back five of Liam Reeve, Hayden Taylor, Kieran Mouton, Angelo Ritossa and Alastair Hicks had hardly put a foot wrong all day and continued to dominate as the second half began, not losing out on anything. Josh McEvoy and Cam van Baarle were causing problems respectively down both the left and the right, and Josh made them pay when he a lovely run into the box where the Waikanae centre back chopped him down. Penalty!

Trip and penalty

Step up Mr Reliable, Rhys Glover. Rhys has been enjoying his first season at Stop Out and has been an integral part of our side playing at left forward, centre forward, right forward, number 10, central midfielder and today played in the holding midfield spot. Adaptable! He stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, despite the keeper getting an outstretched finger to it.

Waikanae piled on the pressure but to no available. We introduced Jay Tetava to the Senior Men's set up after his recent move from Rhys Glover Petone, good choice Jay! Jack Griffiths also made an appearance from the bench and suitably impressed. Capital 2 2016 P W D L F A GD Pts The game finished 1-0. Get well Rafa!

Former club manager and current club statistician Justin Raffan recently suffered a stroke. Justin is currently recovering in Hutt Hospital. Raff has been a large part of the Stop Out club’s

success over the last few years with his tireless work in the U17’s, u19’s and Senior

Men teams.

He recently supported Scott Easthope and Stu Pyne as Samoa’s Manger at the Nations Cup in Papua New Guinea. Justin is currently the Phoenix Central League manager. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the touch line... soon! 13

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out

fan Mike Barton

gives us his Conspiracy theory perspective on the

beautiful game!

Vandalism struck a Dunedin football ground, as I write, last night. A gate was left unlocked and somebody drove a car around the pitches ruining them for football. Then a car was burnt out in a goal mouth. My friend, Paul, who arrived at the ground for a youngsters’ rep trial was hugely angry and took to social media with his concerns. This led to the following coming to light. The Dunedin incident follows the previous day’s attack, my word for it, on a ground in Waiuku in Auckland. That attack was only two weeks after a similar one in KeriKeri. We also had a similar event here at the Hutt Park a relatively short time ago.

In searching the internet for the name of the Dunedin ground I came across a series of news reports highlighting similar incidents all around New Zealand. The common denominator is that they all seem to be at football grounds. Indeed much of the commentary around Paul’s angry postings made much of that fact. Whilst I am not saying that what follows is evidence I did ask friends, by phone and the web today, if they knew of any other codes grounds that have been vandalised in this way. I drew a blank. One friend did remind me of an attack we witnessed about forty years ago. We arrived at the Cleary Street ground, now gone, in Waterloo to find some teenage boys with an axe and trying to chop down the posts. To start with I think they thought we were onside with them and one said ‘it’s OK it’s just a soccer ground’. That added fuel to the fire.

Clearly, the recent incidents are not directly linked but I wonder if there is a link in the sense of attitude. This is either hypothesis that needs further investigation or something of a conspiracy theory driven by the fact that many of us know that some, in New Zealand, regard football as an inferior past-time.

Moving on to some sad news. Some of the older faces around may remember Ray Hill. He coached at Tawa before heading north to Takapuna and getting them into the National League in 1981. Ray died about six weeks ago.

Ray’s Takapuna were promoted the year Stop Out were relegated. Last time I saw him I made something of that fact. Ray was from Liverpool, in England, and a big Liverpool fan. In the 1981 season Dunedin City were coached by the former Liverpool player Alan A’Court. Ray told me that in the first match against Dunedin he was completely distracted by the fact that A’Court was sit- ting just a few metres away. At one stage having to be reminded, three times, that he had wanted a substitution made. Before, his word, ‘embarrassingly’ telling the player ‘that’s him and I am sit- ting next to him’. Summed up by Ray saying that it was, in its own way, great that the schoolboy had never left him.
