Last time we were at Hutt Park we started our match against Petone seven points behind league leaders Napier and there was a real concern we could be drifting off the pace. Having a week off because of Chatham Cup to rest and recharge the long line of injuries was welcomed and what followed was two wins —against Petone and PN Marist which has helped “right the ship”. The bonus last weekend was that none of the five teams around us in the league had wins and we’ve jumped up to fourth spot just 3 points of the top. What that highlights is how close Central League is this season with almost all teams capable of upsetting the form book. Last week’s Miramar result is testament to that. With the recruitment of a host of high profile Team Wellington players they've had a dream run in the league and Cup and been in ominous form. But the Nix youth hit their straps and scored an emphatic victory. Everyone is acutely aware that Miramar don’t have two off days in a row so expect an epic encounter today. It’s been a great season so far for the Stop Out club and as you’ll see in the following pages our 2nds, 3rds and 4ths are all very much in the mix for promotion spots. And last week was one of our greatest ever achievements with all three Masters teams scoring wins! Now that hasn’t happened since JT last ventured over half way! With the midweek invitation to play the Wellington Phoenix it has reinforced our place as one of the Premier clubs in the region. Tuesday night at Fraser was a wonderful occasion and a great experience for Stop Out players, management, ball kids and spectators. We competed admirably and created many a chance in a competitive 5-1 win for the Nix. In this week’s programme we also break down the statistics for Stop Out talisman Steve Gulley’s 150th appearance for the club. A great achievement from one of our finest! Enjoy the football today and our Stop Out hospitality! 3 CENTRAL LEAGUE 2016 P W D L F A GD Pts Napier City Rovers 12 7 4 1 30 17 13 25 Olympic 12 7 3 2 28 21 7 24 Miramar Rangers 12 7 2 3 32 25 7 23 Stop Out 12 7 1 4 31 23 8 22 Western Suburbs 12 5 4 3 31 18 13 19 Wairarapa United 12 5 2 5 32 32 0 17 Wellington United 12 4 3 5 24 22 2 15 Lower Hutt 12 2 5 5 23 23 0 11 Marist Palmerston North 11 1 2 8 20 38 -18 5 Petone 11 0 2 9 12 44 -32 2 2016 Central League Rnd 1 Sat 2 April Stop Out 3 Wairarapa 1 Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 2 Sat 9 April Petone 1 Stop Out 5 Petone Turf @ 3.00 Rnd 3 Sat 16 April Stop Out 2 PN Marist 1 Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 4 Sat 23 April Miramar 2 Stop Out 1 Dave F @ 2.30 Rnd 5 Sat 30 April Stop Out 3 Phoenix 1 Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 6 Sat 7 May Wests 5 Stop Out 3 Endeavour 1 @ 2.30 Cup Sat 14 May Island Bay Stop Out Wakefield @5.45 2 1 Rnd 7 Sat 21 May Lower Hutt 2 Stop Out 2 Fraser Turf @7.30 Rnd 8 Sat 28 May Stop Out 3 Napier 1 Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 9 Sat 4 June Olympic 2 Stop Out 1 Wakefield 2 @ 5.45 Rnd 10 Sun 12 June Wairarapa 4 Stop Out 1 Masterton Turf @ 2.30 Rnd 11 Sat 18 June Stop Out 5 Petone 1 Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 12 Sat 2 July PN Marist 2 Stop Out 3 Memorial (PN) @ 2.30 Rnd 13 Sat 9 July Stop Out Miramar Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 14 Sat 16 July Phoenix Stop Out Newtown 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 15 Sat 23 July Stop Out Wests Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 16 Sat 30 July Stop Out Lower Hutt Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 Rnd 17 Sun 7 Aug Napier Stop Out Park Island @ 2.00 Rnd 18 Sat 13 Aug Stop Out Olympic Hutt Park 1 @ 2.30 2016 L Hutt Marist Miramar Napier Petone Stop Out ‘Rapa Olympic ‘Nix Wests L Hutt 9/7 1-3 13/8 4-0 2-2 4-1 1-2 23/7 0-0 PN Marist 3-3 1-7 16/7 28/5 2-3 30/7 2-3 3-5 13/8 Miramar 16/7 2-3 1-1 13/8 2-1 2-1 30/7 1-5 3-2 Napier 4-2 4-1 24/7 10/7 7/8 3-2 2-2 3-0 1-1 Petone 1-1 6/8 2-3 0-4 1-5 0-5 16/7 1-4 2-7 Stop Out 30/7 2-1 9/7 3-1 5-1 2-1 13/8 3-1 23/7 Wairarapa 2-1 1-1 7/8 2-2 24/7 4-1 3-3 2-1 0-2 Olympic 3-2 23/7 3-4 1-2 4 3-1 2-1 9/7 6/8 2-1 Phoenix 2-2 5-2 4-3 30/7 3-3 16/7 13/8 1-3 9/7 Wests 6/8 3-1 1-1 2-3 30/7 5-3 16/7 1-1 6-1 The 3rds climb back on top! Marty Dutton’s Cap 5 side took another step towards promotion Having a week off when the whole of Capital 5 was last weekend. Here is Marty’s cancelled due to supposed weather related ground “tell it straight” match report. closures (despite near perfect playing conditions) was frustrating, so the thirds were looking forward to meeting local rivals Naenae at their place. Having comprehensively beaten them 4-1 in the first round, we went into our second round game confident of gaining three more points. Although we had some rain during the week, we were greeted by a beautiful clear sunny day at Naenae Park. We were scheduled to play on Naenae 1, but were shocked to see the condition of the pitch. In the first half Naenae, playing with the slope of the pitch, appeared to deal well with the slippery conditions and unusual pitch dimensions, and played some good attacking football. We looked a bit nervous at the back, but good going forward as usual. Our first goal came after 15 minutes when ex-Naenae striker Jake Phillips slid a perfect ball through to Kieran Page who calmly slotted home past the keeper. Incidentally, no Capital Football referee was assigned to this game, and a special mention should be made to the young Naenae player who reffed admirably in the first half. We went into the half time break 1-0 up but with quite a bit of work still to do. In the second half, we had the slope Jake Phillips of the pitch with us, and we were able to dominate possession and pass the ball more freely on the very cut up surface. A refereeing substitute in the second half brought a much more one sided view to the game, meaning that we had two goals disallowed, two clear penalties not awarded and some unusual calls made against us. One particularly bad call gave Naenae a free kick just outside our box, which was struck really well and going into the bottom left hand corner of our goal. Remarkably, man of the match Andy Crisp dived to his left and put a strong hand to the ball to send it off course to safety. Despite the refereeing, we still managed to score another two goals (a second to Pagey, and the final one to Matt Henderson) which sealed victory for us. Our Men’s First Team’s game against Waterside Karori was abandoned last weekend due to a clash causing the Wharfies keeper, Gabe Cooper, to be knocked out and rushed to hospital. He was discharged and feeling positive, and will be having follow-up tests. Our thoughts go out to Gabe and his family. The game will be replayed later in the season. The lads are showing a great deal of team spirit as they are fighting hard for points every week, showing the intensity needed to succeed in this very competitive Central League. With plenty of support for them this week with a larger-than-usual Old Timers’ Day crowd, we hope for some points today – COYB. Our Women’s First Team had a 4-1 win over Seatoun last week, having going 1-0 behind after two minutes. With North Wellington being eighth in the Central League and Petone sitting ninth, this is a big day for both teams in the search for valuable points. Petone, with a recent loss to Miramar and being knocked out of the Chatham Cup, now need to focus hard on the league and play to their full potential. Our Women’s First Team’s first home game of 2021 on May 8 resulted in their first three points of the season and they followed that up a win in the first round of the Kate Sheppard Cup on May 16. They play Wairarapa on the May 22 before their game against Vic Uni – we look forward to how many points they can get from those two games. It is fantastic to have the Wellington Phoenix back at Sky Stadium for the first time in over 12 months. They have been playing some great football at their new home over in Aussie – let’s hope they bring their best game back to Wellington and provide some great entertainment to their loyal supporters who will no doubt be at the game in record numbers.

A quick recap of the last two weekends – our Liquid IT Men’s First Team had a loss and a draw and now sit mid-table, Reserves two good wins, Third Team two losses and Fourth Team two wins and sit nicely on top of the Wellington 3 table. Our Powerex Women’s First Team had two wins and sit near the top of the W-League, Reserves two losses and U18 Team a win and a loss, so this development team is going really well. Our closed-shop teams had a mix of results over the two weeks. But from the vibe in the clubrooms, they are all loving being out playing football again. With a full round of games for all of our teams except masters this week due to the school holidays, we have an exciting weekend ahead of us. The main game today is our Liquid IT Petone Men’s First Team against Waterside Karori – both teams needing points to rise up the league table. The curtain raiser is Petone Reserves versus Waterside Karori Third Team – so hopefully a lot of support for both teams here today. And continuing the theme, next weekend (July 18) our Powerex Women’s First Team also host Waterside Karori.

Two-and-a-half months later Wthan normal, but great to have a full season ahead of us playing through to October. The last few months have been crazy and I do hope everyone has kept active and well during this period. I also hope our Men’s and Women’s First Team squads have kept up their fitness, which they all worked so hard on up to lockdown – we’ll see how they hold up in the next few weeks :-) The club has assembled a great Men’s squad again who will be tested in the Central League this year and, as always, our ambition is to do well backing up our glorious promotion success last year. We welcome back old and new players to our squad as well as our new First Team coach Charlie Howe and his assistant Kieran Cripps. Our Women’s W-League Team has been strengthened with some new players enhancing our solid base from last year. We have strong ambition to also do well in the W-League and with coach Kevin Torres we are excited about the year ahead. We have had a good start, last week beating Wellington United 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the Kelly Cup – a good sign of things to come. Our Women’s Reserve Team has also strengthened this year to compete in the Capital Premier League with coach Roger Torres.

A great win for our Men’s Firsts against Wainui a couple of weeks back, getting some valuable points as we enter the second half of the season. Our Men’s Reserve Team had a valuable win last weekend against Kapiti Coast United showing that they can get back on track and pick up a lot more points in round two, after completing round one today against top-of-the-table Stop Out. Our Powerex Petone Women’s Firsts got another point against Victoria University a couple of weeks back, but got knocked out of the Kate Sheppard Cup on penalties last week. Currently in the middle of the table, some points today against the top team in the W-League are much sought after, following a very close loss away in the first round. Just over the half way point in the season for our teams, although our Women’s Premier have just three games remaining—don’t ask why! And it’s wonderful to see that both our first teams sit atop their respective Premier Leagues. It mirrors last year’s performance where we won both the Men’s and Women’s Capital Premier titles. Bu there’s a lot of footy to be played and a lot of 50-50’s to be contested before any celebration can begin—let alone thought about. But better to be first in the league than last! Today’s opposition Waterside can attest to that. Only a couple of weeks ago they were in the Cup and unbeaten in the league. Sometimes the difference between a win or a loss can be a marginal decision, a few suspensions and a few injuries! But as our first round loss to them confirms, Wharfies are still one of the 3 favourites with Stop Out and Wellington United—to win the Premier League The nuisance of Miramar and Olympic 2nd teams in Capital Premier just confuses the push to win the league as they can’t gain promotion into Central league.
