ur club has introduced a new supporters’ package this year, whereby Osponsors have the opportunity to advertise on the back of player shirts in both the Petone FC Liquid IT Men’s First Team and Powerex Women’s First Team. These much-appreciated financial supporters will also be named match-day sponsor for one game per year, in which their business and the players proudly wearing their shirts will be profiled in the following pages of this programme. Hospitality will be provided to the sponsor at that game and, additionally, framed pictures will feature in the club stairwell during the season. A few shirts are still available, so any businesses who may be interested – and any club members who have any potential contacts – please advise club chairman Matt Bliss . This weekend’s featured sponsor is Powerex, who sponsors the Petone FC W-League Team and whose name also appears on the shirts of both Jordan Pickering and Libby Boobyer.

Jordan Pickering Centre back/team manager Why have you chosen over other codes? I’m a Pickering so I didn’t have much of a choice.

Do you have a lucky charm or ritual that you observe before playing? Wearing the same shin pads as I have done my whole senior career.

What do you do outside of football? Work full time in IT and the rest of my time is spent between my family, girlfriend, friends and personal hobbies such as playing the guitar and gaming.

J’ouvert – Brockhampton. Favourite takeaway? BurgerFuel. Who is your favourite team in any other league? . What footballer do you most admire and why? Virgil Van Dijk – best centre back in the world of course. What did you learn from COVID? Working from home isn’t as great as it sounds and James Nash should not be left unattended for long periods of time or you’ll come home to ruined pans. What would be your ultimate achievement in your sport this year? Training for the first time this week after being out injured since the end of last year. What is the best thing about Petone Football Club? Welcoming, social atmosphere and being a family-orientated club. Libby Boobyer Attacker Why have you chosen football over other codes? I enjoy it, it’s just one that stuck. Do you have a lucky charm or ritual that you observe before playing? Just make sure I get enough stretches in pre-game. What do you do outside of football? Wooorrrkk, work, work and chill with my dog Nala. What is the song you like to train to? A variety, just some good sing-alongs. Favourite takeaway? Burgers, probably LUCKY or BurgerFuel. Who is your favourite team in any other league? No idea, I don’t follow football. What did you learn from COVID? Not to overdo exercises. What would be your ultimate achievement in your sport this year? Ahh, NZF Selection Camp. What is the best thing about Petone Football Club? The colours. GO Teams @ the Juniors

he following is an update on the progress of four of our club’s girls-only (GO) Tjunior teams.

U8 GO Petone Settlers The U8 GO Petone Settlers team has had a great start to the season. All girls are enthusiastic and embracing the team spirit – learning not just football skills but also how to work as a team and be good sports. With nine players in the team, there are plenty of subs each week and all take turns on and off the field. Training on Friday nights is going well and is well timed – just before the girls play their games at Alex Moore on Sunday mornings. Everyone is loving the football season so far and we can see the girls improving each week and all becoming great friends.

U12 GO Petone Villagers The U12 GO Petone Villagers have started the season really well and it was pleasing to have two brand new players to football and one who has returned after three years away. I thought moving to the bigger fields with nine-a-side might be a big jump for a group of mostly ten-turning-11 year olds. However, the team has gone from strength to strength. The team has a positive, supportive environment with a great group of willing parents/guardians – and some mostly-supportive siblings! – on the sidelines each week. We have started the season in a really positive fashion, winning every game to date and scoring 19 goals in the previous two games – so it looks like we will be promoted. The team needs a few harder games to really develop their play, but I have been so impressed with their desire to listen/learn, keep a good structure and really enjoy themselves when on the field. We are looking forward to the games ahead.

U12 GO Petone Wanderers The U12 GO Petone Wanderers kicked off the season strongly and raring to go. With the first round completed, we have four wins and one narrow loss, 23 goals for and four against. We’re a mix of a few players new to football and others with more experience. They are all keen to learn, are enjoying the season, and positional play and passing is improving a lot. Bring on Sundays!

38-42 Railway Ave Ph: 04 887 1311 U14 GO Petone Settlers Currently sitting in second place on the table with four wins and a draw from our six matches, the U14 GO Petone Settlers have had a great start to the season. Unfortunately, we recently dropped two points in the last couple of minutes – conceding a late goal against the league leaders. We do need to be more ruthless in making our dominance on the field count. But some great football is being played and the girls should be proud of their season so far.

Next Club Event! Dave Agent Memorial Darts Night July 25 U17s Report

020 so far has been an eventful year for everyone, with COVID-19 disrupting 2the country as well as the start of the football season. Against this background, the new Petone U17 Talent Development Programme (TDP) Team has had a hard introduction to the elite youth level with no wins so far. However, the point of the league is in the title – “development” – and for the coaching team and players, this is the mantra we have taken to heart. With the Petone TDP in its first year we have found ourselves up against clubs with well-developed academy structures – such as Western Suburbs (Olé) and Lower Hutt (Wellington Phoenix) – and others who seem to have forgotten the aims of the league and have focused on short-term results over long-term development. From the coaches’ perspective we are here to improve the players’ abilities (what I like to call the “three Cs” – cognition, competence and character), have them enjoy their football and enable us look to develop players that can become Petone FC stars of the future. As someone who has only joined the club this season, I am impressed with the work Roger Torres and the wider club are doing with the TDP and think that going forward this programme will only get better. In our first game of the season we came up against Lower Hutt (Phoenix Academy) and it was a somewhat brutal lesson of the level we need to aim for. However, there were signs from a number of players that they could step up. Our next game was against local rivals Stop Out and, although we lost a game marred by a couple of nasty challenges on our players, the character and level of dominance for large parts of the match was pleasing to see. A harder task followed against Wests (Olé) and it indeed did prove to be a challenge too far at this stage. North Wellington was the next cab off the rank and again we knew this was going to be difficult as they had changed most of their squad from last season, recruiting players from outside in an effort to chase those short-term results. The quality of those players did indeed ensure that they prevailed, but again the improvement by our team was pleasing. In our most recent game we played Miramar Rangers and this was where we could see the development of the team starting to show out. Although the final score was 3-1, we controlled portions of the game very well and our goal was a fantastic team effort, highlighted by quick passing and a great finish. But for a disallowed goal, the result could have been different. The results on the field don’t quite tell the whole story though. As a coaching team we can see the step by step improvement that is occurring each week by the lads as they adjust to the level of competition. With such a young team – at least half will be back next year – it is a big challenge for them. But it is very pleasing to see that they are willing to take it on. We will continue to work on the three Cs at each session and I am sure the results will come. From a coaching perspective it is great to have Shea Stapleton and Sam Pickering involved. The lads know and respect them and it provides a great link into the senior side of the club. A big shout out to Jody Siegel as well – you make all of our lives so much easier and are doing a fantastic job wrangling the players (and the coaches). I’d also like to thank First Team coach Charlie Howe for taking some time out a few weeks ago to talk to the lads and give them a great insight into the attitudes and commitment required to reach the next level – they were amazed that even Chris Wood used to sweep out the changing rooms after games. It hasn’t quite inspired them to follow suit yet but we are ever hopeful. To the parents of the players, thank you very much for the work you do behind the scenes ferrying the lads around, making sure they have their boots and turn up on time for games etc. You are an important part of our team and I’m sure the lads appreciate it (or will once they are no longer teenagers). Terry Douglas U17s coach Life Member – Andy Badrick

ndy joined the club in 1984 as a Men’s First Team player coming from the AStokes Valley club. In the years since he has established a fine reputation as a player, coach, administrator and strategic football advisor.

Andy had a long and distinguished career as a player, making 230 First Team league appearances from 1984-1994 and a lone appearance in 1999. He was the first player to reach 200 First Team games and, for 20 years, he held the club record for most First Team appearances, until surpassed by David Lane in 2013. A highlight was winning Central League One in 1990. Also, in 1989, he was awarded the club’s Footballer of the Year trophy. During his years in the First Team he scored 23 goals.

As well as the First Team, Andy played for the Men’s Reserve Team and was awarded Player of the Year in the side that won Central League Division Three in 1995. He was also a member of the 1997 Third Team that won Wellington Division One and thereby the Venus Shield. This gives Andy the unusual distinction of playing in each of the club’s top-three teams when they have won their respective leagues.

Specialising in Sign Manufacture and Installation www.signfoundry.co.nz 0508 FOUNDRY Wellington - - Andy was also selected in the Wellington Representative Team of 1989, playing in all five games as the team was unbeaten. With Petone becoming part of the Hutt Valley United setup for the National League, Andy also played 20 games for the combined team from 1987 to 1990. In 1999 and 2000 Andy was assistant coach for the Men’s First Team. His coaching then took a back seat until 2013 when he looked after the Men’s U17 Reserve Team for two years and jointly coached the Men’s Fourth Team in 2015. It is notable that he coached age-group teams while not having his own kids involved. He also helped out coaching the women’s teams when others were away. Andy was elected onto the Management Committee in 2004 and, during his first year, took over as treasurer – a role which the club had struggled to fill. He remained treasurer Andy Badrick pictured during his through until 2008, stepping down playing years when he was posted overseas by his employer. He was also a member of the Men’s Football Committee for two years. Andy kept in contact with the club while overseas and, upon his return, provided valuable contributions to the running of men’s football – in 2014 becoming a member of the Football Advisory Committee. Andy came back onto the Executive Committee in 2016 and immediately picked up the vacant chairperson’s role which he held until being posted overseas again at the end of 2018. Once again, while overseas Andy has kept a close interest in the club and continues to provide valuable insights, and has represented the club in discussions with potential players. In recognition of Andy’s very substantial contribution to many areas of Petone FC since joining in 1984, the club awarded him Life Membership at the 2019 AGM. During that time the team won Wellington Division One three times, each time being awarded the prestigious Venus Shield for winning the highest Wellington division. Craig then stepped up to coaching the Men’s Reserve Team in 1999 and 2000, and was also co-coach of the Men’s U19 Team in 2000. In 2003 Craig helped establish the Armanis – a team comprising mostly Craig Deadman (right) pictured with former First and Reserve Team players Ray Bell at the official opening of the who wanted to continue playing Honours Board in September 2011 but at a slightly lower level. Craig played several seasons for the Armanis and, although the team has had many personnel changes over the years and now plays in the highest masters division, Craig still holds the team very dear. Craig was elected onto the Management Committee in 2004, becoming the deputy chair. The following year he was elected chairperson, a role he held for 12 years. This role is not to be underestimated and during that time he led a Management/Executive Committee that not only: kept the club profile high maintained the club’s very strong reputation maintained the club’s strength in terms of financials, supporters and playing numbers also continued to take the club forward, particularly in terms of junior development, growing the women’s game and diversifying the club’s revenue streams In his role as chair, Craig represented Petone FC in the media and was also very active in all aspects of the club.
