The Start of a Big Year – Club President, Mark Thomas

Welcome to another season as The Western marches proudly towards our Centenary celebrations. This coming Queen’s Birthday Weekend will see a plethora of social occasions to cater for all tastes. The celebrations will start unofficially on the Monday night prior to the weekend with the infamous ‘100 jug evening’ being resurrected at O’Sheas. Many a reputation has been gained or lost at this lascivious occasion. All hardy souls are welcome. The weekend proper contains golf, football, a formal function and supper and concludes with a champagne breakfast. On the footballing front, all teams have started their seasons. The Premier Men won their pre-season tournament and have started the season strongly. Our club, once again, is represented right through the Men’s, Women’s and Junior grades. Our ability to attract and retain players is testimony to the hard work and atmosphere we all try to create and embrace at The Western. This year we have welcomed Rocky Hudson to the Junior Convenor’s role. He has confidently helped us with organising all the Junior sides. This is a task that all clubs rely on and we are grateful to have him on board. I, along with my other Board members, wish all teams in the club, the very best in their respective competitions.

Go the mighty Western.

Thommo.

Men’s Premier Team- Coaches, Pre Season Wrap and Results to Date

Introducing the First team Coaches:

Julian “Jules” Morris

Jules continues on in his third successive year as the Western Men’s First Team Coach, a position he assumed in the 2011 season after previously coaching the reserve side. Julian has been part of Western for over 23 years and while playing made over 100 appearances for the Western first team.

Jimmy Small

Jimmy has this year returned to a coaching role within the club, bringing a wealth of experience and assistance to the coaching team and the senior squad. Jimmy has also played for the club for over 15 years and previously coached the first team back in 2006. Pre Season Success

The first team was once again entered into the Coastal Spirit pre season tournament held at Linfield Park and ASB Football Park. The opening game was of typical quality as the team displayed off season rust and were beaten 2-0 by Halwsel. However this was the only game the team lost in the remainder of the tournament. Subsequent wins in the two remaining group matches against Ferrymead Bays and Costal Spirit ‘B” saw them top their group. In the semi final the team got passed Coastal Spirit “A” with a 2-0 win while rounding out the tournament in style with a 1-0 win over the enemy Cashmere Woolston Technical. A nice start to the centenary year. Results to Date
