Stephen Vaughan Jr.’s side went down 2-3 at home to Llandudno. Early pacesetters Prestatyn Town, who are currently five points clear after a narrow win at Porthmadog, are next up for the Citizens following their first reverse of the campaign. The visitors started the brighter of the two sides and were rewarded after 19 minutes as Dean Seager competently put away a spot-kick after Simone Rea was guilty of a handball. But on 33 minutes, Aldair Neto levelled proceedings with an excellent cut back and finish from a fantastic run and through ball from Emmanuel Agyemang Akwa-Dei. Ashley Ruane went close with an effort shortly after the break but the second came on 67 minutes as Emmanuel Agyemang Akwa-Dei deftly headed from an Aldair Neto in-swinging cross from the right wing. A second penalty was awarded on 69 minutes and it was former Citizens standout Robbie Parry held his nerve to score against his former club. Substitute Alfons Fosu-Mensah prodded home from close range to put the away side ahead 2 minutes after equalising, again from some exceptional skill in the build-up from Aaron Pomeyie. City failed to pierce the rear-guard of Llandudno in the hunt for a third and next up is a tough cup game against TNS tonight. “We can’t afford to create that many clear-cut chances and not score,” said manager Vaughan Jr. after the game. “Unfortunately, you get what you deserve in football and you’re not going to win games if you can’t put chances in the back of the net.” MASSIMO SAMMARTINO With Favourite takeaway? The chance to play at the best possible level. Develop as a player, adapt in a new environment and improve my English With FIRST TEAM MANAGER STEPHEN VAUGHAN Stephen Vaughan Jr. has enjoyed plenty of success in the hotseat at the Eurogold Stadium after taking over in the summer. The boss has overseen a glittering start to the domestic campaign, only for it to have been brought to a grinding holt against Llandudno at home last Saturday. Losing 2-3 was a negative but being wasteful in front of goal was a big concern for Vaughan Jr., who hopes we can take our chances and advance to the next round as we take on TNS in the second round of the Nathaniel MG Cup tonight. “It was disappointing to lose the game on Saturday and they scored two penalties. We controlled the game in large parts, but when you continue to miss chance after chance, you get what you deserve in football and that certainly happened with us,” he said. Goals from Aldair Neto and Emmanuel Agyemang Akwa-Dei were cancelled out by a pair of spot-kicks from Dean Seager and Robbie Parry, while Alfons Fosu-Mensah further compounded the Citizens’ misery as we slumped to a first defeat of the season. “We missed chances from four and five yards out in that game but tonight we’re up against a quality side and these are the games you want to be involved in. “Everyone knows that TNS are the best side in Wales and everyone knows they’re going to want to come here and win because they will probably want to win the league cup. “They’ll come with a strong side who play football and it’s a massive challenge for our lads to play against proper players.” “It’s easy when you’re getting it all your own way and you can see a lot about a player’s personality after a win or a loss, but when it doesn’t necessarily go the way you want it to, you’ve got to stand up and be counted and that’s what I want from this group.” Elliot Foster PLAYER PROFILE PICS 1 2 3 4 G BRINO E DALIA F Di CRESCENZO Y BAIO 5 6 7 8 P CAUTERUCCI D THOMPSON A RUANE P VIEIRA 9 10 12 14 H BLACKBURN F SERAFINO M SAMMARTINO A ZOUMBARE 24 16 17 18 J THOMAS L ARMSTRONG F LEGHISSA M BRUNO 19 20 21 15 L NAPOLITANO M De MARIA E ZAMINGA D KIWANDA PLAYER PROFILE PICS 22 23 11 25 L SURBER D SALVATORE L CASTALDO J ATKINSON 26 27 28 29 S REA N DELVECCHIO A NETO M GOZZERINI 30 41 E AKWA-DEI AGYEMANG G CUOMO L PURCELL, M LEGHISSA & S VAUGHAN PLAYER PROFILES Gabriele BRINO GOALKEEPER The 6’3” shot shopper comes to Bangor with lots of experience for such a young keeper. His quality on the ball is frightening. The lightning quick full back is in the mould of Marcelo. David THOMPSON DEFENDER The central defender needs no introduction to Welsh football having spent a lot of his football career in the Welsh Premier League with Bala Town and Rhyl. A tough, vocal, leader that has a very sweet left foot. Lennie ARMSTRONG DEFENDER Lennie is a young defender in the mould of John Stones. He has bundles of quality and huge potential. Since coming in pre-season he has made the right sided Centre Back position his own. Excellent on the ball, brave in and out of possession and has a big future in the game Lucas SURBER DEFENDER The tall and experienced Argentinian central defender has bags of quality on the ball. The History of Football from FIFA.com • The Origins • Britain, the home of Football • Opposition to the game • The Global Growth The Origins The contemporary history of the world's favorite game spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the Football Association in England was formed - becoming the sport's first governing body. Both codes stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree. A search down the centuries reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees, and to which the historical development of football has been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that people have enjoyed kicking a ball about for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to consider it an aberration of the more 'natural' form of playing a ball with the hands. On the contrary, apart from the need to employ the legs and feet in tough tussles for the ball, often without any laws for protection, it was recognized right at the outset that the art of controlling the ball with the feet was not easy and, as such, required no small measure of skill. The very earliest form of the game for which there is scientific evidence was an exercise from a military manual dating back to the second and third centuries BC in China. This Han Dynasty forebear of football was called Tsu' Chu and it consisted of kicking a leather ball filled with feathers and hair through an opening, measuring only 30-40cm in width, into a small net fixed onto long bamboo canes.

One Hundred Children in the Long Spring 12th century AD, Song Dynasty Soccer Facts: Prelude to Global Popularity ❖ The Han Dynasty ancestor of a football was called Ts’u Chu. It was a leather ball measuring 30-40cm in diameter filled with feathers and hair. ❖ In Japan, a similar form of this game, called kemari, began about 500-600 years after the creation of Ts’u Chu, followed by chuk-guk in Korea and woggabaliri in Australia. ❖ The Greek episkyros and the Roman harpastum was later played with a smaller ball by two teams on a rectangular field marked by boundary lines and a centreline. The objective was to get the ball over the opposition's territory. ❖ As early 1314, soccer grew in popularity in Europe, however authorities issued proclamations forbidding the sport within the city due to the chaos it usually caused. ❖ In 1365, King Edward III of England actually made the game punishable by law because it distracted soldiers from practising more useful military disciplines, particularly archery. The ban lasted almost 500 years. ❖ Although soccer was popular from the 8th to the 19th century, it was disorganised, violent, more spontaneous and was usually played by an indefinite number of players. An early illustration of soccer. Getty Images. ❖ It was nine years after the rules of soccer were first established in 1863 that the size and weight of the soccer ball was finally standardised.

Nothing is further from the truth. Researchers face the difficult task of finding a balance between their preparations, resulting in a research plan and conducting the research in practice . The research plan contains the research questions, the research purpose, an ethical paragraph, a plan for disseminating the findings and an outline of the overall research strategy as well as the specific methods, techniques and instruments to be used. A plan provides structure, but it should not interfere with flexibility. A plan provides certainty, but should not block other promising options. This chapter provides pointers for handling this ambivalence in the design of a qualitative research project. LEARNING AIMS At the end of this chapter, you will be able to: • Name and reflect on all elements of a research plan • Reflect on the use of literature in a qualitative study • Recognize a research question that is framed in a way that demands qualitative methods • Formulate a qualitative research question when a research topic is given • See how descriptive and explanatory purposes of research are related • Distinguish between the purposes of fundamental and applied research • Account for the choice of qualitative research methods in a study • Work out the composition of a sample when starting with an a priori theory • Employ theoretical selection in a qualitative project • Identify some commonly used strategies for getting access to and recruiting participants Boeije-3883-Ch-02:Hodkinson-3827-Ch-08.qxp 4/23/2009 3:03 PM Page 20 20 ANALYSIS IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH Planning a research project The planning of a qualitative research project seems to run counter to the open pro cedure described in Chapter 1.

Foundation Narratives in Rowing, Cricket and Australian Rules Football: Sport in Footscray 1859-1886 Darren Arthur A thesis submitted for a Masters by Research degree at Victoria University Institute for Health and Sport Victoria University Melbourne, Victoria April 2019 Darren Edwin Arthur – MA Thesis ii Abstract How does a sporting club come to life? What and who are the drivers behind it and what are the forces that shape its development? This thesis examines the town of Footscray through the lens of three local sporting clubs during the period 1859–1886. The study attempts to answer the above questions and considers the reasons each entity came into prominence and what hindered their progress or allowed them to grow. The major focus of this thesis is the Footscray Football Club whose precise origins have not been formally identified, despite conjecture that the club was founded in 1883. Two other local sporting clubs are closely scrutinised, namely the first incarnations of the Footscray rowing and cricket clubs, whose histories have not been properly documented. The intertwined histories of these organisations will not only assist in providing wider contexts for understanding the birth of the local football club, but will, more broadly, illuminate the important role that sport plays in the building of local communities. Darren Edwin Arthur – MA Thesis iii Declaration I, Darren Edwin Arthur, declare that the Masters by Research thesis entitled, “Foundation Narratives in Australian Rules Football: The Footscray Football Club and its Local Community 1859-1886” is no more than the required word length including quotes and exclusive of appendices, bibliography, references and footnotes.
