Newsletter #13
Newsletter #13 Welcome to the latest edition of my irregular updates newsletter and thank you for your continued interest and support. More features this time about my latest additions, items I'd like, auctions and other interesting sites. As ever, clicking on the picture or highlighted text in each item below will take you to a more detailed site, either mine or the relevant one. Also, if you know of anyone else who might be interested in receiving this newsletter please ask them to get in touch with me via the site or perhaps YOU could provide me with their email address. Another highlight from my website Perhaps it's an oddity, but I don't care and I'm going to include this here. It's the earliest item that I have of anything resembling HTAFC memorabilia - a sadly incomplete newspaper report of Town's 6-1 West Riding Cup 2nd Round tie against Clayton West on 20th March, 1909 at a time when Town was only a Midland League team. Of interest here is the mention in the third paragraph of 'The Redskins' which MUST be Town because Howard - who kicks clear - is a Town player; so does this prove that Town played in red at this time? All Town fans know that we were at one time known as 'The Scarlet Runners' due to playing in red shirts - later to become pink as the colour ran after all too-frequent washes! - and this would appear to be the evidence that was required. This brilliant piece of history is glued to the back of the telegram that I have announcing Town's acceptance into the Football League soon after in 1910. -

Popularity of Tennis Gaining As Spectator Sport
The Harris Survey For Release: Thursday, September 12, 1974 POPULARITY OF TENNIS GAINING AS SPECTATOR SPORT By Louis Harris Although football remains the most widely followed game among the nation's sports fans, tennis is moving up rapidly as a spectator sport. The Harris Sports Survey finds that the number who say they "follow" tennis has risen fron 17 to 26 percent just in the last year, by far the most dramatic change in American sports preferences. Horse racing was the only other activity to show a gain, with 20 percent of all sports fans now saying they follow the horses compared to 18 percent a year ago. Recently, the Harris Sports Survey asked a special national cross section of 1,384 sports fans: "Which of these sports do you follow?" (HAND RESPO!:DENT CARD) SPORTS FOLLOWED BY FANS Football Baseball Basketball Tennis Auto racing Go1f Bowling Horse racing Boxing Track and field Hockey Boating The biggest and most spectacular rise in recent years has been registered by tennis, which has moved from last place in 1971 up to 4th in the 1974 standings of spectator interest. The three main reasons for this surge in tennis popularity can be traced to: 1) A sizable increase in the nunber of persons who are playing the sport themselves these days; 2) Much wider television and press coverage of tennis matches on a regular basis; and 3) The energence of young, attractive superstars such as Chris Evert, Jim:y Connors, and Bjorn Borg. Interest in horse racir.~):as grown partly out of the excitement stirred up by Secretariat, lcst year's superhorse, and the legitimization of of f-track betting in New York, which statistically accounts for close to 10 Fiercelit of tile country. -

He had a very brief career as a decent goalkeeper until around the age of fifteen, at which point his strong tendency toward laziness kicked in and he decided to write about sports instead of playing them. When he got to Southern Methodist University, he started writing in sports for the student newspaper. He eventually had jobs at the Dallas Times Herald, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, and the Memphis Flyer before fleeing the southern summers for Portland, Oregon in 1996. Since then, he has written sports, travel, and outdoors articles for publications all over the country and is the author of five guidebooks for Menasha Ridge Press, including Portland’s best-selling hiking guide, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Portland. He has guided hiking trips in Oregon, California, Colorado, Italy, and Nepal. Along the way, since writing never really pays the bills, he has also worked for nonprofits, restaurants, tour companies, an insurance company, Radio Cab Company in Portland, and on Alaskan fishing boats. And that’s just what he can remember. Since his first English soccer game in 2011, he has seen more than 100 a hundred contests at more than 60 sixty different grounds. Back at home, he’s a Portland Timbers season ticket holder and a dues-paying member of the Timbers Army; he hates nothing in life more than the last ten minutes of a game when the green and gold are ahead by one goal.
