Central League 2020 Liquid IT Petone FC vs Miramar Rangers Saturday June 13 | 3pm | Memorial Park Proudly supporting Petone FC liquidit.nz Chairman’s Corner

elcome to the 2020 football season, at last! Two-and-a-half months later Wthan normal, but great to have a full season ahead of us playing through to October. The last few months have been crazy and I do hope everyone has kept active and well during this period. I also hope our Men’s and Women’s First Team squads have kept up their fitness, which they all worked so hard on up to lockdown – we’ll see how they hold up in the next few weeks :-) The club has assembled a great Men’s squad again who will be tested in the Central League this year and, as always, our ambition is to do well backing up our glorious promotion success last year. We welcome back old and new players to our squad as well as our new First Team coach Charlie Howe and his assistant Kieran Cripps. Our Women’s W-League Team has been strengthened with some new players enhancing our solid base from last year. We have strong ambition to also do well in the W-League and with coach Kevin Torres we are excited about the year ahead. We have had a good start, last week beating United 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the Kelly Cup – a good sign of things to come. Our Women’s Reserve Team has also strengthened this year to compete in the Capital Premier League with coach Roger Torres. We additionally have a great Women’s U18 development squad, with all players in our Women’s senior programme being coached at a high standard and competing for spots in the highest team they can play in. Our Men’s Reserve Team is looking strong this year too. Although we did not get off to a winning start in Capital 2 last weekend, with new coach Ben Feld onboard we will be driving hard for promotion! I feel we will see some great winning football from this talented group, which has a nice mix of younger and older club players. With some great support from Steve Davey and Chris Hosnell, we have a solid group of payers in our Third Team playing in Capital 3 and the Untouchables in Wellington 6 – both teams had a win on opening day. This group of players form part of our senior football programme and will be treated as such this year with the opportunity to advance into higher teams on merit. We have a true “squad culture” this year. The Powerex Hilton-Petone Cup was well run by Barry Pickering again, with Tawa winning the First Division final against . Unfortunately, the Division 2 competition was halted before the semifinals were played due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Thank you again Barry and other volunteers. Our junior development programme has now been approved by Capital Football and we have a great new sponsor in support. The Mitre 10 MEGA Petone Settlers Talent Centre has three talent development programme teams in Grades 13, 15 and U17 and I will keep you updated on their progress! Our Junior Club is huge again this year with so many volunteers making it enjoyable and fun for players and their families. The dedication to keeping children within our football community engaged and improving their skills is awesome to see. Our club is very proud of the opportunities we provide our young players and hope to see them do as well as they can and advance into our senior football programme. A big thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers and committee members that make this club function – as well as our sponsors who have stood by us over this difficult period. We are so lucky to have a strong community support base to enable us to be successful on so many levels. I am looking forward to another enjoyable and successful season, both on and off the field. Matt Bliss Chairman [email protected] Website Update

ith the start of the 2020 playing season, it is time to unveil an update to Wthe Petone FC Website. The existing site has been in place from around the beginning of the 2011 season and has been expanded and extended many times over the years, by many different volunteers.

The old site has served the club well. However, the online landscape has changed. Information is more often delivered to mobile devices and social media is a far greater factor in people’s lives. Consequently, we needed to revamp the site in order to better address the information needs of today’s players and supporters.

We had intended to roll out the new-look site at the start of this year. However, in part due to issues around COVID-19 and the lockdown, this has been pushed back until now. The new Website should be live by the time of this publication.

Thanks to an updated framework, we have more flexibility to add features to the site and consequently will be further extending it as the season progresses. We hope to be able to give you more up-to-date and relevant information, along with improved integration with various social media feeds.

It should also allow better opportunities for sections of the club to contribute content relevant to their areas of interest. Keep an eye out for further updates to the site over the coming weeks. http://www.petonefootball.org/

Old Timers – Dave McKissock

ave McKissock is one the club’s most notable past players. He played for DPetone from 1949 to 1959, and was captain of the 1949 Petone team that won the . Dave was born in 1923 in Kilmarnock, Scotland. He joined Petone in 1949 after a season with Railways, in which he had also played four games for New Zealand against Australia. Re-emerging after World War II and with competition from a new club, Petone Technical Old Boys, Petone had struggled to field a top team and withdrew from the Senior Championship of 1947 and 1948. But proactive club administrators visited the immigrants’ hostel at Fort Dorset, and as a result signed on enough new players to create four senior teams. With this new talent, the club applied for entry to Senior B, but the Wellington Football Association (WFA) placed them in the second division, one grade lower and effectively the third championship level. The team went on to record some substantial victories and, becoming known as the Settlers because of all the immigrants in its ranks, went on to win the 1949 Chatham Cup – the only time in history such a feat was achieved from a low division. The team’s performances drew huge crowds for local games and a huge 12,000-plus were at the Basin Reserve final when Dave was presented the Chatham Cup by Governor-General Sir Bernard Freyberg VC – such was the importance attaching to the cup final in those days. The 1949 Settlers team was coached by Andy Leslie, who had played in the other Petone sides to win the Chatham Cup in 1928 and 1930. Andy’s son, also named Andy, went on the become captain of the All Blacks and is still very much a Petone identity. Many years after the Chatham Cup success Dave recalled: “There were no stars in the team. We were all of good, or near enough to it, ability. We did, however, have a lot of team spirit and a hell of a lot of luck. Team spirit was our strength and that would be our only asset on today’s standards. We hadn’t the skills of today’s players or even the teamwork. On the other hand, we didn’t have the ability to scream, yell and argue.” Despite this modest appraisal, Dave and others in the Settlers team featured in articles in the Scottish newspapers and London’s Daily Mirror, such was the extent to which his team had captured the public interest and support. In 1952, Dave was in the team that won the WFA First Division and the Venus Shield, and in 1956 he was in the Hilton-Petone Cup winning side. In later playing days he was still in the first team in 1959 at the age of 36. He continued to play • Home Loans • Life Insurance • Commercial Loans • Health Insurance • Construction Loans • Business Insurance • Vehicle & Asset Finance

Throughout his career, he was the example others pointed to of the best-dressed footballer: white shorts, white laces and spotless boots – all at a time when clubs only provided jerseys. In 1951, Dave represented New Zealand against Victoria and then in six games in Fiji and New Caledonia. He also played for Wellington for many years, often reported as the outstanding player and praised for his baffling footwork and well-judged tackling. He served on the club’s management committee from 1963 until 1968, being one of those instrumental in having the gymnasium built, and then for another year in 1972. In 1970 his contribution to the club was acknowledged with election to life membership. Dave passed away in 1985, but he is still remembered in the club’s historical photos and on the Centurions’ Honours Board. Dave’s granddaughter, Kirsty Anderton, has two sons playing at Petone — Caleb is in the 12th Grade Wanderers and Luca is in the Ninth Grade Settlers. Dave’s grandson, Mark Skipper, who currently lives on the Isle of Wight, has also recently made contact with the club. 38-42 Railway Ave Ph: 04 887 1311 Junior Juncture

t has been another busy start to the season for our junior committee, along Iwith grade managers and coaches. Registrations opened in early February, the season was put on hold in late March but now we are ramping up to the season’s start. This year sees another bumper number of registrations for the club, with over 500 junior members across our First Kicks programme (four to six year olds) and 38 junior mixed league teams (9th to 14/15th Grades) and six girls-only teams. As many clubs would know, this requires a marathon effort to co-ordinate teams, training schedules, gear and coaches – all of which is handled by a volunteer committee. With the continuation of the Petone Settlers Talent Centre last year, players of all abilities now have the opportunity to develop their skills over and above the weekly team trainings, through either a talent pathway or the community skills centre programme, which for some commenced this week. Some of our junior coaches have also been sharpening their skills by attending Gary Jenkins’ coaching course last week so as to ensure they can provide the best environment for the players throughout the season. A huge thank you to all of our junior coaches and managers, as well as our junior committee for their tireless work. Making football fun for all!
